Class Motto - Not at the Top but Climbing Class Colors - Scarlet and Grey Class Flower - White Gardenia Graduation - May 26, 1953 7 CLASS HISTORY As we travel back through the years we see that only nine students have had all of their twelve years of education in Hawley. They are Jean Anderson, Edward Beck, Lawrence Erickson, Pearl Krogh, LeRoy Leverson, Jeanette MacDonald, Grace Melbye, Roger Olson, and Albin Sorum. GRADE ONE: It was a disillusioned group of boys and girls that faced Miss Mickelson that first day. But after the first day everyone got used to everyone else. We had a sandbox in our room and when we were good we got to play in it. We made a trip out to Fridays farm and saw how we get our milk. At the end of the year we held our picnic at Rittiman's. GRADE TWO: This year we learned a kissing game much to the vex- ation of our teacher Miss Bestul. GRADE THREE: This was the year we moved' upstairs and were told several times walk, don't run down the stairs. Our teacher was Miss Ekeren. Robert Norman left us for a period of one year. GRADE FOUR: The corners of the room were never empty, probably due to the fact that there was always someone a little too anxious to wait for recess to talk. Kenny Leverson joined our merry band this year. Our teacher was Miss Pladson. GRADE FIVE: This year we became pretty good football players and challenged the sixth grade to a few games. But they always seemed to win no matter how many of their good players were absent. Miss Swanson was our teacher. This year Marlys Johnson entered our grade. GRADE SIX: Our teacher was Miss Lorentzen. This was the year we amazed our mothers by wearing our coats out. We never could fig- ure that out unless it was because we, were always sliding down the icy hill. Charlene Olson made her appearance. GRADE SEVEN: We had finally made it into the high school building, and we sure stuck our noses in every corner. We added Geraldine Brokate, Betty Dauner, Darlene Giere, and George Haberle to our en- rollment GRADE EIGHT: Conquer the impossible, was what we said when we rode our bicycles out to Lee Lake. At long last we finally made it. We were sure a tired bunch. Daryl and Douglas Perkins joined us this year. GRADE NINE: This year we had our high mortality toboggan party. We weren't allowed another toboggan party all year! Charles Anderson, Rita Barta, Harlow Braun, Joan Cope, Gail Olson, Harvey Olson, Stanley Sandman, and Marv Spillurn entered our class. GRADE TEN: We finally were allowed to let off steam and initiate the ninth graders. Quite a few of us earned our driver's licenses. So we were all anxious to ask our fathers for the car. Jean Bergen and Kathrine Swenson, joined us at the beginning of the year. GRADE ELEVEN: Audrey Anderson and Darrell Schultzjoined the ranks this year. The Junior-Senior Banquet took up most of our time. We used the Dutch theme. We put on the class play, Our Hearts Were Young And Gay. During the summer our classmate, Helen Frisk, passed away. GRADE TWELVE: This is the year we have all been waiting for with Hobo Day, Senior Outing, and finally graduation as the main events. We will all remember our school days as very happy and interesting ones. 8 HONOR STUDENTS SALUTATORIAN Jean Bergan Sheis always a good sport and ac- complishes everything she attempts in a quiet but efficient way. This balance seemed to deteriorate as the season progressed, and was fully evident in the final games. The Fargo B game, during the fall festival, furnished Hawley with their most exciting win of the season. The Nuggets captured the vic- tory in the last five seconds of play when Bob Dahl fired an aerial to Kenny Leverson in the end zone. The Locomotives racked up their first Minn-Dak victory by downing the visiting Nuggets, and then rolled through the rest of their schedule undefeated to gain the conference crown. The Squirrels also gained their first conference victory at the ex- pense of the last place Nuggets. Moral dropped lower in the Hawley camp, and resulted in a loss to the Fargo Central Bees in the second meetingbetween the two clubs. The Spud reserves gave the Nuggets a good battle, but ran into trouble stopping the end sweeps which netted us all three touchdowns. The Packers scored at will to hand us our second Homecoming game defeat in as many years. Our switch to the split-T formation still couldn't garner us a con- ference win. Several Nugget drives were stalled deep in Grover territory by staunch defensive work. Don Hannestad accounted for a large share of the Oak Grove yardage on drives through the center of the Hawley line. Four seniors played their last game for HHS, Arvid Nelson, RT Eldon Braun, C 30 HOMECOMING On October 16-17, the High School held their second Annual Home- coming festivities. Thursday evening saw the crowning of Jean Bergan as our queen to reign over the activities. Jeanette MacDonald and Betty Dauner were her attendants. Her majesty was crowned by football co- captains, Kenny Leverson and Marv Spillum, following a variety show under the direction of Mr. Sundet in the Community Building. The ball park was the traditional burning of the West Fargo dummy. A snake dance wound up the evenings schedule. Friday's activities started with a parade at 1:30 p.m. The high school band-followed by the floats of the queen, classes, and organizations -led the parade through the business district to the gridiron. Our homecoming slogan Be Wackers, Beat Packers, backfired on us when the West Far- go Packers whacked us 54-0. The Alumni Association sponsored the dance held Friday evening which saw the conclusion of 1952's Homecoming. 31 BASEBALL FIRST ROW: Joe Gemlich, Kenny beverson, Roger Jet- vig. Perhaps the high- light of the 1952 season occurred when Ted Gemlich pitched a 2- hitter against the Dil- worth Locomotives, while striking out 15 enemy batsmen. The B squad ran up a string of seven straight victories, but tapered off near the end of the season to finish with a record of 12 wins against 7 losses.
