They will be greatly missed next year, but they leave behind the essence of their character to linger in the halls of Hawken. x H 5 Y Today is not yesterday: we ourselves change, how can our works and Thoughts, if they are always to be the fittest, continue always the same? Change, indeed, is painful: yet ever needful, and if Memory have its force and worth, so also has hope. Carlyle 3 ,v .I W . WN - I vfs.f's:m.J.3,:r K - 'N'- rr - M--Q-Q.. .Ng M , I -. The I979 Hawken football team, despite injuries to 9 starters, managed to finish for the third straight year as the highest ranked single A high school team in the city. This was accomplished by the Hawken tradition of an explosive offense and a powerful defense. After tlte injury to junior fullback Bob Fisher, the offense sputtered for a game or two before exploding at Newbury. That night another junior, dancin' Joe Matt Harthun, began to show just what a revitalized Hawken offense could do. By the end of the season, Matt became Hawken's first l,OOO yard rusher. When the opposing defense finally clamped down on our rushing attack, the aerial fireworks began with the highly respected combination of senior Jeff Hoadley to senior Mark Kalina. However, the Hawken offense did not stop there. A key run and block could always be counted on from junior Mark Hoffman. Breakway runs from sophomore Eric Hamilton were far from uncommon. When Hoadley looked to his left to throw, he always found sure hands in juniors Dale Kates and Keith Logan. sophomore Peter Henkel and senior Jon Barris. An offense is only as good as the line and this years line rose to the occasion by providing large holes and excellent pass protection. The line, led by seniors Gary Beven and Adam Cohen and strongly supported by juniors Alan Swick, Mark Deutch and Mike Wagner, kept the Hawks in many games and consistently used sharp blocking to lead ball carriers to touchdowns. Defensively the Hawks were led by sophomore linebacker Leonard Slodov, who broke the Hawken record in tackling. The front five spent l110St of the games in the opponents' back field. The five at the start of the season consisted of seniors Neil Howell and Joe Viny and juniors Dave McCreery. Mike Greenberg and Gib Kirkham. When Howell, Viny, and Kirkham were injured they were replaced by senior John Horvitz, juniors Dale Kates and Mark Hoffman and freshman Dave Groves. The other linebacker positions consisted of seniors Ken Merkatz, Chris Cabot, and junior Ed Vizdos who reamed the field. The defensive secondary leadership was found in .leff Schwartz until his injury. Then junior Keith Palevsky stepped in and intercepted three passes in his first game. Rounding out the defense was junior Matt Harthan and sophomore Peter Henkel who quickly adapted to their positions as cornerbacks. Matt led the team with seven interceptions, while both Peter and Matt made many game saving tackles. The team, inspite of losing seven seniors in the future will be led by the finest group of players for a long time. ln the final analysis, we compiled an eight-two record. Not enough can be said about the coaches. Under the guidance of Coach Spicer, and assistant coaches Ribar, Walton, Davis, and McCracken, we came together as a team, and they instilled in us a sense of pride that will be remembered long after the individual team accomplishments are forgotten. Harthan CRDSS CDU T Y With the loss of only one of the previous year's top five runners, everyone seemed confident that the '79 cross country team was in for its most successful season ever. Todd Kneale, the team's fourth man in l978 and winner of that year's most improved award moved up to the first position in '79 and again was chosen most improved runner. Todd and second man Armen Najarian led the team comprised mostly of iuniors. Two newcomers to the cross country team, juniors Dave Scharf Ca sprinterj and Don Rositano. along with captain Jay Brice, traded off the remaining 3 of the top five positions throughout the season in friendly rivalry. Charles Gilbert put in his first year on the team as a senior. and despite his late start made a great contribution to the team, along with Jeff Hoffman. Dave Sullivan and Marcus Brittenum. in bumping back potential scorers on other teams. The team gained only one freshman in '79, Jim Kasmer. Jim gained valuable experience this year for a future which holds much responsibility for him, along with sophomores Jeff Hoffman and Marcus Brittenum. as the rest of the team will graduate after the I98O season. Again with the loss of only one senior from the top five, the team's I98O season looks brighter and stronger than ever as its remaining top four runners will be experienced and dedicated seniors. To the I979 Hawks I shall look back with fond memories, and to the I98O Hawks I raise my glass in anticipation. l L-R. B. Hellerstein, L. Peay. J. Selis, Coach Haskell, N. Hastings. R Mann, D. Eaton, A. Schwartz. ln August, the girls tennis team returned to Hawken to begin a rebuilding year. Faced with the loss of last seasons top two players. outsiders predicted the team would have an average season. Fortunately. the players felt otherwise, and with the help of first year coach Mary Haskell, played to a respectable 9-6 record. The team also did very well in tournament play. In the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association tournament they breezed through the first two rounds before falling to the eventual state champion, Laurel. The sectional tournament was highlighted by sophomore Liz Peay's fine performance: as runner-up she advanced to districts where she again came in second. The doubles teams both made it to the semifinals. The team of junior Jane Selis and sophomore Nancy Hastings lost a tough match to LaureI's state champion team 6-4, 6-4. Senior Anne Schwartz and junior Rachel Mann lost a heartbreaker to the other Laurel team 7-6,7-6. The team was led by senior captain and old board winner Anne Schwartz, who finished the season with a IO-8 record at the tough second singles spot. Liz Peay also did very well, compiling a I3-6 record against the area's finest players at first singles. At third singles Rachel Mann had an outstanding season, holding the teams finest record of I4-4. At first doubles was the strong duo of Selis and Hastings with IO wins against just 5 losses. At second doubles junior Beth Hellerstein and sophomore Dennie Eaton provided some strong support, ending the season with an 8-6-I record. The season was spent rebuilding the team after the loss of many seniors last year. The four returning lettermen were seniors and held defense positions. These seniors were Beth Gibans. Donna Alemagno. Sue Drake. and Marian Morris The defense was extremely solid. The halfbacks included a dependable and strong Beth Gibans, a very aggressive Tracey Easterday Cdefense awardj. and a steady and consistent Susan Selis. Rookies Annie Blum and Wendy Bauer displayed their adeptness by learning how to play hockey so quickly. The defensive combination of fullbacks Donna Alemagno and Sue Drake COId Board Awardj and goalie-captain Marian Morris was tough to beat. Drake also played forward line due to her versatility and powerful drives. When Drake played forward. Meg Belden and Sherri Powar displayed their ability at defense positions. Donna Alemagno was a great asset because of her dependability and strong drives. The offense consisted of many new players. Players new to the game were freshman Sue Emert, freshman Amy Leizman. juniors Alison Loop and Rozanne Zulauf. and senior Debbie Fader. All of these players caught on very quickly. Emert Cmost improved player awardj displayed her skills at dodging and driving. Other offense players included Pam Hyde, Meg Belden, Amy Weidemann and Sharon Marsee. The scoring power was shared between these players. Through previous experience. Marsee Qoffense awardb was able to lead the forward line. All of these players will add a tremendous amount of experience and skill to next year's team. Perhaps the root of the problem stemmed from the lack of unity and responsibility that commenced at the beginning of the season. These problems were hard to cure becuase the team lacked a unifying force. Varsity: BACK ROW L-R: S. Emert. R. Zulauf, A. Weidemann. Coach Deter, P. Hyde, D. Alemagno, D. Fader. B. Gibans. VOLLEYBALL The l979 Varsity Volleyball Team welcomed a new coach this year, Mrs. Kathy Kuss. It was a learning experience for both team and coach as we strived to improve and learn from each other. In spite of a 6-IO record. team spirit and friendship made it a winning season. The team was led by senior co-captains Debbie Katz and Diana Horvat. Debbie's three years of varsity experience and bumping and serving abilities made her a key player and contributed to her receiving the Old Board Award. With two years of varsity experience. Diana strengthened the team's offensive game with her excellent downward serve and spike. Senior Kim Humphrey contributed greatly to the team's overall performance as a starting setter. Senior Maria Rozhin developed much-needed blocking skills and improved her serving and spiking abilities. Senior Amy Korman was a hardworking, dependable player who strived to improve throughout the season: her willingness to work and friendliness earned her the team award. Junior co-winner of the Most Improved Player Award. Bev Lyles, strengthened the team with her consistent serve and iumping ability which contributed to her spiking and blocking. Anne Bresnicky, a second year starting sophomore, was a fine all-around player who excelled in setting. Sophomore co-winner of the Most Improved Player Award, Kim Cabot. showed promise as a top server and spiker. Sophomore Marcia Brown worked on her serving and setting skills. and her improvement was apparent. Nancy Harthun. a freshman who moved up from the Junior Varsity, was a capable and determined player who will be a leader in future seasons. However, to the surprise most everyone, this year's team proved to be one of the best Hawken's history. With a blend of youth, a little experience, d a lot of desire, the team was able to boost an I8-4 record d claim the sectional championship. Leading the team were veteran seniors Jeff Hoadley and nptain Mark Kalina. Hoadley led the team in blocked shots and lina helped the team from the point. Junior Dale Kated played e other guard position and led the team in assists with four r game. Rounding out the starting line-up were sophomore perstars Steve Phillips and Eric Hamilton. These two led the am in both scoring and rebounding with Hamilton scoring Il.4 ints a game and grabbing many rebounds, while Phillips scored points per game. Junior Keith Logan came in often to clear the boards, iunior an Antunez was always able to aid with his hot shooting hand, d junior Mark Hoffman devastated many opponents with his 1acious defense and constant hustle. Another bright spot was Jhomore Brent Maynard, an amazing dribbler and passer. 'ong support was also given by seniors Jon Guggenheim, Andy nton, and Gerald Johnson. The l979-80 edition of the basketball team was an exciting t inconsistent group. One of niany highlights during the dual meet season was a 45-I8 crushing of archrival University School. The first but definitely not the last victory over the Preppers. The last dual meet of the year, against Cleveland Central Catholic. showed the overall strength and skill of this year's Hawks. Every Hawken wrestler won his match! The score. Hawks 54. The Hawks entered the post season tournament competition expecting to do well as a team despite the presence of wrestling powers such as '78 State Champs Cardinal and '79 State Champs Richmond Hts. But the Hawks did better than expected. The Hawks finished in 3rd. place compiling l2OIf1 points in two days of competition. This was the best showing in sectionals in the Hawk's history. In addition, eight Hawken wrestlers advanced from the tough sectionals to the district tournament. Wrestling is an individual sport as well as a team sport. Individually the Hawken wrestlers excelled tremendously. Every full time varsity wrestler won five or more matches with at least one pin! This year there were three senior wrestlers. Tri-captain Charles Gilbert finished I2-2 in dual meets with 7 pins, 2 superior decisions. and 2 major decisions. He also placed 2nd in the Hawken Tournament and 3rd in the sectionals. Fred Davis had a 6-2 l68 record which was good enough to give him 3rd seed in tht sectionals. Jamie Barker, the last of the senior trio finished witl a 7-6-I record against fierce competition and placed 5th in tht sectionals. Outstanding juniors this year 'included tri-captain Dol Rositano who finished with an umblemished I8-O record, a lst in tht Hawken Tourney and a 2nd in sectionals. Tri-captain Bob Fishe finished 2l-I with a 3rd at the Hawken Tourney and a strong Src at sectionals. Paul Frankmann finished I9-I-2 on the season and 2m at the sectionals. After losing last year's starting five, the team was left with a young and inexperienced squad. However, with four returning Iettermen and the determination of the newcomers, we managed to compile a 7-I4 record. The starting five consisted of senior captain Debbie Fader, juniors Rachel Mann, Beth Hellerstein, Beaver Lyles and senior Donna Alemagno. With the tallest girl standing at 5'7 , the team relied on the outside shooting of Mann and Fader. Mann was the leading scorer averaging a little more than I2 points a game. ln addition to being leading rebounder, Beaves provided the team with a solid inside game even though her opponents always had a height advantage. In the first game against Laurel, she broke the school record with 24 rebounds. Point guard Beth Hellerstein provided the team with good ball handling and also added depth to the outside shooting. Donna Alemagno added needed strength under the boards. Coming off the bench very frequently were seniors Anne Schwartz and Kim Humphrey, sophomores Ann Bresnicky, Lisa Deighan, Linda Alemagno, junior Michelle Rhodes and freshman Nancy Harthun. Because the team was plagued with some injuries during the season, head coach Smith relied very heavily on this crew to fill in the vacant spots. Rhodes, Schwartz and Harthun filled in at the wings while Bresnicky and Humphrey helped out at point guard. Deighan and Linda Alemagno helped out on the boards by filling in at the forward and center positions. With 8 returning Iettermen, next year's team should be Stronger and have hopes of a more successful season. Despite a losing record, there were many bright spots in the season! Little did we know that with a team of only 6 upperclassmen, we would finish the season IM months later with a very respectable I6-6 record. Thanks to the superb coaching of head mentor Ron Robinson and assistant coach Jim Bresnicky, the spirit on this close knit team and the leadership provided by senior tri-captains Debbie Fader, Anne Schwartz and Donna Alemagno, it was a great season. One of the finest infields in Hawken history provided the team with a solid defensive core. The starting lineup of Soph. Linda Alemagno at Ist, Frosh Nancy Harthun at 2nd, Jr. Rachel Mann at SS and Sr. Anne Schwartz at 3rd, tortured opponents with an almost errorless defense. The infield will be remembered best of all for Nancy's acrobatics, Rachel's incredible grabs, Linda's body stops. and Anne's immortal catches. This year's outfield was also one of Hawken's best. Led by seniors Debbie Fader in left and Donna Alemagno in right center, there were very few spots for fly balls to fall. Their outstanding catches kept the lady Hawks on the winning end of the scoreboard. These valuable seniors will be missed next year. There are many other talented fielders to help fill this void though. Soph. Anne Bresnicky started in left center field all season. while Lisa Deighan and Beth Hellerstein alternated in right. Sophomores Wendy Bauer and Kristy Loveman also filled in when needed. Another important factor attributing to the Hawk's successful season was the pitching staff. Soph. Lisa Deighan and Jr. Beth Hellerstein both did a fine job at this position, combining for 30 strike-outs on the year. Deigs earned an 8-4 record while allowing only .98 runsfinning. Beth posted a 7-2 record and a fine .79 R.P.l. average. Frosh Karen Warner caught for both pitchers and did an excellent job in her first season. To compliment their defense, the girls produced a .395 team batting average. They were led by Jr. Rachel Mann who set school records in 3 categories. She finished the season with 48 hits, IO H.R.'s and 98 total bases. Mann also led the team with 4l runs. 7 doubles, 5 triples, 39 RBI's and a .558 batting average. Debbie Fader and Donna Alemagno also provided the team with a strong offensive punch. both batted .469 for the season. Finishing the season with a combined varsity and JV record of ll-7, the girls not only were successful, they also had a great time. We will never forget Mr. Bres sprinting from the field after the Hawken Tournament, Tarzan Warner's jungle call when she hit her first home run, Nancy Harthun's razzle-dazzle as she made her hot dog plays, Nicky Bres coining the phrase KSOR . and Mr. Bres' chewing tobacco. Last. but hardly least. we will always have memories of our sometimes pessimistic. sometimes doubtful. sometimes wet, usually obnoxious, but ALWAYS greatly appreciated head coach. The squad finished the season with a IOG mark, defeating such area powerhouses as Mayfield. Gilmour, W.R.A. and Brush. Throughout the season, the team was led by Senior captain Kirk Nahra, who played the first singles position for the third straight year. Nahra finished the campaign with a I2-4 record, winning his last ten matches. Brother Paul Nahra, a Junior, occupied the second singles slot and finished the year with a IO-3 record. He will be one of the strongest players in the city next year. Senior Rob Edgerton, a third year man, played third singles and ended his Hawken career with a very impressive record. The doubles teams did not finish as strongly as expected, but all players finished with around .500 win-loss records. Seniors Mark Gillinov and Norm Gilbert combined at the first slot. while Senior Rick Heffern and Sophomores Ken Cramer and Rob Testman alternated at the second position. The Sectional Tournament was a disappointment for most of the team, as defaults and bad draws ended District hopes, but the lone bright spot was the doubles team of Nahra and Nahra. The duo won the Sectionals, losing only one game enroute to victory. They went on to win the Districts in a similar fashion. without the loss of a set, and culminated the season by placing fourth in the state. With the departure of first year coach Mary Haskell, Old Board winner Kirk Nahra, and Seniors Rob Edgerton. Mark Gillinov, Norm Gilbert, and Rick Heffern, as well as Sophomore Rob Testman, this season is the end of an era for Hawken tennis. Starting as a first year team, the girls did outstanding work, characterizing the team as a spiritful. enthusiastic and dedicated group. The team consisted mostly of underclassmen: Juniors-Jane Selis, Tracey Easterday, Roxana Zulauf, Anne Whiteman and Ginny Gascoigne, Sophomores-Kathy Wright, Kim Cabot, Liz Peay, Lisa Gaynor, Cindy Raffel, Sue Selis, and Claudia Richardson, Freshmen-Jane Esselstyn, Sue Emert, Sara Durn, Karen Schupp, Kim Holtrey, Sue Hackenburg, and Andrea Wedren. The girls began their season with victorious dual meets led by the more experienced AAU swimmers- Esselstyn, Wright, Emert and Schupp, with the necessary backing up of the newer swimmers, who were constantly improving their times. Divers Jane Selis, Sue Selis and Claudia Richardson provided support throughout the season. Jane's l3TH place in the District meet, coupled with Claudia's 28TH and Sue's 32ND, helped the team with their surprising capture of this coveted title. Districts began with a surprising victory in the 200 medley relay by Jane Esselstyn. Kathy Wright, Sue Emert and Sara Durn. Other exceptional wins were. Jane Esselstyn's IST in the I00 back, and 200 IM, Sue Emert's 2ND in I00 back and 6TH in the 200 IM, Kathy Wright's 5TH in the I00 breast and 7TH in the 200 IM. Sara Durn's 5TH in the 500 free and 6TH in the 200 free, and Karen Schupp's 8TH in the 500 free. Other girls' times placed for points also, Tracey Easterday in the I00 fly and I00 back. Roxana Zulauf in the I00 breast, and the freestyle relay team consisting of Karen Schupp, Tracey Easterday, Roxana Zulauf and Anne Whiteman. All other swimmers and divers made outstanding improvement and provided support and enthusiasm for the team's incredible victories. This is the first time any school has won the Districts in both the girls' and boys' team in the same sport. Esselstyn, Wright, Emert and Durn continued onto the State meet, placing their relay SRD. Esselstyn won the state in I00 back Can incredible victory for a freshmenj and also placed 5TH in the 200 IM. Emert placed I3TH in the I00 back, while Wright placed l5TH in I00 breast and Durn placed 20TH in the 500 free. These girls placed the lady Hawks 6TH in the state overall, an overwhelming victory for a first year team consisting of no seniors. Awards went to Kim Holtrey for most improved. The team lost seven of nine starters due to graduation last year and had only four returning Iettermen. However Coach Bob Spicer combined youth and experience to form a very competitive team. The baseball team is unique in it's schedule as it competes against mostly double and triple-A schools rather than schools of Hawken's size. As a result of this fierce competition against area powers such as Shaker, South, Benedictine, Mayfield and others. the Hawks finished with a record of ll-I3-I. The infield was composed of two sophomores and two seniors. Senior captain, Mark Kalina, anchored the infield from the shortstop position. Senior Chris Cabot handled the first base duties when he was not hurling from the mound. When Cabot pitched, senior Andy Fenton played a solid first base. At second and third were sophomores. Peter Henkel and Ted Esselstyn, who both came along tremendously in the field and at bat. Esselstyn moved in when junior sensation Juan Antunez was injured in an early game. The outfield positions were held by senior Jon Guggenheim and juniors Neil Lasky and Mark Hoffman. These three along with junior Keith Palevsky and senior Wally Steele did an excellent job all year defensively. On the mound the team had some trouble in the early going. Cabot was the team's ace and he was always excellent. However the pitching staff after that was quite shakey. Bothered by arm troubles, Esselstyn and Hoffman had slow starts, but came through well toward the end of the year. Kalina also pitched at times and was quite effective. Lastly, Peter Henkel was a pleasant surprise as he hurled well at the end of the season. The team was sparked all season long by the brilliant catching and hitting of senior Bennett Blau. When Blau needed a break, junior Mark Deutsch always gave a good performance behind the plate. One very bright spot for the team was the hitting of junior DH Jeff Schwartz. He came along and became a very solid hitter The team had a rocky year but there were some high points. They defeated area powers such as Mayfield and Benedictine. They also had victories over arch rivals U.S. and W.R.A. The team is losing only six seniors so next year should hold only good things. l96 mb- , P - xi Xt R I ,ff N A lm- 'L f 4 il' The girls' track team had a slow start this season. ln March, when many of their competitors had started practice, it was doubtful that there would even be a team. At that time there were no meets scheduled and no coach. The team was composed of mostly new members, having lost many original members to graduation. The team was saved when Marty Webb agreed to coach. The season opened with I3 runners. At the first meet, the girls were forced to forfeit five events for lack of participants, the final score was more than embarrassing. However, the team proved to be extremely dedicated, and the defeat did not keep them from making a successful attempt to improve themselves. They have become a group of experienced, well-rounded runners. The team's sprinters were freshwomen Susie Peppercorn, Sofia Lorenzo, Liza Cohen, Molly Shannon, Pam Cole, Natalie Lowe, Becky Elder, Sophomores, Jennifer Garson, Dennie Eaton, and Juniors Dawn Forbes and Ritu Chattree. The 400 meter dash was run by Dennie Eaton and Stephanie Chiapetta. The distance squad was composed of two runners. Freshwoman Leslie Schwartz and Junior Kristin Roudebush. Between Natalie Lowe, Dawn Forbes and Molly Shannon the team managed to place consistently in the long jump. The shot put and discus were thrown by Ritu Chattree, Kristin Roudebush and Leslie Schwartz. The high jumpers were Kristin Roudebush and Becky Elder. The outstanding performance of the season was made by returning letterwoman Dennie Eaton.
