The Secretary of the Navy takes pleasure in presenting the NAVYACHIEVEMENT MEDAL to DAIVIAGE CONTROLMAN THIRD CLASS JOHN EDWARD EMERY JR UNITED STATES NAVY for service as set forth in the following CITATION: For professional achievement in the superior performance of his duties while serving as a Mine Watch in USS HAWES from 19january to 28 February 1991. While deployed to U.S. Naval Forces Central Command in support of Operation Desert Storm, Petty Officer Emery performed his demanding duties in an exemplary manner. VVhile on patrol in the northern Arabian Gulf, he sighted a contact mine that had broken free of its mooring and was drifting across the swept channel. Because of his vigilance, the mine was safely avoided by HAYVES and a convoy of five amphibious warships. His diligence, resourcefulness and perseverance contributed significantly to the effectiveness of HAWES in support of the coalition forces against Iraq. Petty Officer Emery's professionalism and devotion to duty reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
