CLASS POEM Why stirs with sad alarm, the heart, For all who meet must some day part? So, let no useless cavil beg True wisdom bows to God's decree. Though lingers on the lid the tear, 'Tis one of sorrow, not of fear, For well we know we can not cling Forever to the parent wing. The wind is fair, the sails are spread, Let hearts be firm, God Speed , is said, Before us lies the untried way, And we're impatient at the stay. At last we move, how thrilled the heart, So long impatient for the start! Now up o'er hill and down through dell, The echoes bring our song-farewell. Selected by Sue Cole from Paul Lawrence Dunbar. I, it Testator Witnesses Mike Faucette Larry Alvis Brenda Chatman I4 Senior Class History We, the Senior Class of 1961, glance back upon all the things accomplished and look forward to our future goals with hope in our hearts as we depart from Haw River High. One bright morning, in the fall of 1957, we, as the Freshman Class, began our high school career. Class officers were chosen as follows: Jimmy Johnson, Pres- ident, Emo Tew, Vice-President, Brenda Chatman, Secretary, Larry Alvis, Treas- urer. Betty Roach was the Homecoming attendant and Mike Faucette, escort. Con- testants for the Haw River Fire-Queen were Anne Williamson and Dana Knight. Our Sophomore year, under the leadership of Mrs. Betsy Wall, was marked with such successes as the Sophomore Prom with Bells of Christmas as our theme, our magazine sales, and initiation into the Beta and Monogram Clubs. Jimmy Johnsonwas again chosen President, Emo Tew, Vice-President, Anne Williamson, Secretary, and Larry Alvis, Treasurer. Dee O'Neil and Betty Roach, were Fire- Queen contestants. Our homecoming attendantwas Anne Williamson with Clarence Coggins, escort. Dana Knight and Maurice Thompson represented the Sophomore Class in the May Day Program. In the fall of '59 we began under the direction of Mr. L. D. Martin, our long-awaited Junior year. We were led by a fine slate of officers that year: Jimmy Johnson, President, Salty Sykes, Vice-President, Tommy Bosquet, Secretary, and Larry Alvis, Treasurer. Betty Roach and Mike Faucette were our Homecoming Repre- sentatives. Our gleaming gold class rings, the coveted symbol of high school days, arrived and every Junior was proudly sporting abig ring on that third finger. After many months of our working, planning, and hoping, spring came and we took our exciting trip to Washington and New York. Mr. and Mrs. J . T. Martin, Mrs. Charles Miller, and Mr. Art Claar were chaperons. 1960-1961, Graduation Year! What a magic Word! At last we are dignified Seniors. Our advisor for the year has been Mr. Gurney Baines. Our whirlwind of exciting and wonde rful events have included selling ads for the annual, electing superlatives, and having three members of the Mid-State Conference Football Team: Sam Farrar, Larry Alvis, and Emo Tew. For the fourth consecutive year Jimmy John- son was elected President. Larry Alvis became Vice-President, Mike Faucette, Treasurer, and Tommy Bosquet, Secretary. Ann Williamson and Mike Faucette were elected Homecoming Queen and King for 1960. Brenda Chatman, the senior class attendant, was escorted by Bobby Smith. Dana Knight and Tommy Bosquet were selected Queen and King of the Annual Christmas Prom. The High School years of the Class of '61 have been wonderful and have passed quickly. As we standtogether for the last time, clad in cap and gown, we are proud of our achievement, we will always treasure the memories associated with Haw River High and will be eternally grateful for the guidance given by our Board of Education and the Faculty. We go out to new goals and to the challenge of the future with a feeling of confidence and assurance because we are graduates of Haw River High School. CLASS HISTORIAN DANA KNIGHT 15 . CY .13 .' Although the number of candidates was small compared with other schools, the experience of the past campaign carried us through a successful season with 5 wins, 2 loses, and 1 tie. The players were small in size but giants in determination and desire. A few teams of higher classification feltthe razor sharp edge of the Indians war toma- hawks. Several of the braves that led us on the war path for the last time in their high school football careers were Tew, Alvis, Jones, Johnson, Sykes, Oldham, Farrar, Martin, and Boggs. -1-v,-lp-Q--H 1 , Bashethall girls, Co-Captain Co-Captain Faye Fogleman Gayle Alvis First row, left to right: Sue Ray, Gayle Alvis, Faye Fogleman, Pam Kimrey, Anne Williamson, Penny Goodwin, Gayle Pearson.
