A, Ghantt, Class Colors: Reaanawhite RedCarnation Class Motto: We are working today for a better tomorrow. Class Poem Classmates, pause we here to think a little As our journey nears an end Of the years we've had together And the good times that have been. Though sometimes the path seemed rugged And our courage seemed to wane, Still we know our aim was worthy, Not an hour was spent in vain. Though each hardship was a struggle, On we fought to reach our goal, Always striving for the knowledge That would strengthen our future hold. As we journeyed down the pathway, Forming friendships tried and true, In our four great years together We've found pleasures old and new. Yet we've learned one precious lesson That to us precedes the rest, In this climb to reach the summit, Each must try to do his best. Each must go his separate pathway, Each must choose his own life's rule, Each be loyal to the guidance Given at dear old Haw River School. Witnesses Testator, Dan Clark John Long Clarence Simpson Bobby Shue 5 I 1 i 3 E A J Class History In September, 1956, at the ring- ing of the ole school bell a group of happy but bewildered Freshmen entered Haw River High School. While adjusting to our new way of life we found our class sponsor, Miss Thelma Cates, with a great amount of patience and understanding. The class elected Doris Riley as P r esidentg later she was chosen Homecoming Attendant. Although we enjoyed our new experiences as freshmen, the swimming pool was enticing, and we faced our summer vacation with joy. Our Sophomore year, under the direction of our class sponsor, Miss Betsy Watson, was marked with such successes as the Christmas Prom, The Backward Wedding, and a Sock Dance. Class President was John Long. Lillie Mullis and RobertEpps were our Homecoming Attendants. As the Sophomore year drew to a close, we eagerly awaited our Junior year. In the fall of '58 we began our Ju- nior year under the sponsorship of Mr. L. D. Martin. We elected Jerry Ray as our president. We sold ma- gazines to raise money for our Wa- shington and New York trip, which we planned to take during our Senior year. Our class rings, the coveted sym- bol of our high school days, were re- ceived during the latter part of our Junior year. Our Homecoming At- tendant, Lela Marks, was escorted by James Ray. Although it was a year of hard work, we will always have many happy memories of our year as Juniors. In the autumn of '59, we, being dignified Seniors, entered school for our last year. Like a whirl of wind, our activities began under the sponsorship of Mr. J. S. Lovette. San- dra Starnes was immediately elected president, and again we sold maga- zines to boost our class fund. Doris Riley was elected as the Homecom- ing Queen for 1959 and 1960 and was escorted by Robert Epps. Our Senior representative was Sue Fogleman, escorted by Dan Clark. Then came spring, and we made the long-awaited trip to Washington and New York. Many months of work- ing, planning, and hoping had gone into our preparation, but it was worth all the effort. The trip was wonder- ful, and our experience will be a life long memory. We all marveled at the great sights that we had heard and read so much about. When our yearbook arrived, it was a great day for us, and we felt very proud of our annual staff. As our Senior year drew to a close, we held the annual Seniors' Day and presented our class pro- gram. As one can easily see, the high school years of the class of '60 have been exciting and have passed quick- ly. We have had failures, as well as successes, but at graduation we will be able to face the challenge of the world. When we have said goodbye to our school and friends here, we will go out with a feeling of accom- plishment and with pride in our hearts, because we are graduates of Haw River High School. The Indians, racked by graduation and inexperience, were faced on all sides by teams which, in the previous year, had completed rebuilding their squads. However, the Indians have been up for several years, and a rebuilding season was due. Next year should be a completely different story with Sophomores Gary Rich, Bull Riley, and Nookie Ray, Juniors Ronnie Epps, Pee Wee Duncan, and Johnny Minnis, and Seniors Emo Tew, Jimmy Johnson, Larry Alvis, and Taddy Martin. However, the Indians will still be rated darkhorse, but the teams should tread lightly when they encounterthis new, revenge seeking group. 41 . H , , .,..-,,,:,,. .,,,,.-,.,-,... Qirls' Basketball This year's girls' basketball team, after winning the post sea- son tournament last year, is definitely rated one of the top conten- ders of the conference. The loss of Reva Riley, Rhonda Thompson, Linda Harder, and Coralee May will be a hindrance to the lasses, but such stars as Doris Riley, Pat Modlin, Anne Williamson, and Lela Marks will help to make up the gap caused by graduation. The girls showed hustle and spirit during the first games and appear to be able to give any team in the conferenceagood game. At the pre- sent, the lasses are sporting one of the best guards in the confer- ence-Doris Riley. Leading the girls' roster at forwards are Anne Williamson, Faye Fogleman, and Sue Fogleman. Close behind Do- ris Riley at the guard positions are Lela Marks and Pat Modlin, As for the future, Ann Rich, Margaret Long, Diana Epps, and Pam Kimrey appear to be leading the way. 45 t 'ffrrfz'- -new .1 is 44' ., i Fj.'P 'f ' Wi' 'A V' 5- Q A-.ff.... 7.1 Fred Haymore James Ray Butch Epps Staffing 5 Emo Tew Bruce Dawson wwf ui... .M , 'WZ First Row: Coach Lovette, E. Boys' Basketball After a slow start this year, the Indian basketball team came on strong just before the holidays. Many people are expecting better things out of the squad than in the preceding years. Leading the Indians is Emo Tew, a scrappy rebounder and point maker. Close behind him is Bruce Dawson, asteady play- er and playmaker. Next is Butch Epps, who had difficulties start- ing this year, but appears to be finishing strong. Jimmy John- son is one of the steadiest guards in the county. Leading the squad next year will be Jimmy Johnson, Emo Tew, and Nookie Ray. 47 ' fF3egs.i.e':sf.n.sw-l'Si9.q:'.'.sg:f.2'--15.4-.em 1-F42 -at t. Withthe veterans Emo Tew, Dan Clark, Jimmy Johnson, Butch Epps, J. D. Coble, and Bruce Daw- son returning to add strength to the fine array of underclassmen, this year'steam should be well balanced between defense and offensive. However, the loss of such stars as John Long, Jimmy Stout, and Jimmy Sykes will prove a handicap to the inexperienced freshmen. Nookie Ray and Gary Rich, however, should be great as the years go on. 49 :wr1::'f ii If I - ,,.,.m ,.,, ' .4L...u.-. , , ..,,.., v H W 'Sf 14 , ff: f Q Mfr' f' . fx J Q k '-2, . 45 3 it. ls., amy., :Q.,.,.,N,,W, N ,:,,, . ,,, , . , .4 ' ,, W ,, IAWYQ ' 6 ,gm I fm: . of , AA .Q A W ' -1 Ti- ik M' 535 J may-' ,.Y4,w- 4 Ifkdy. x Xfgv z-haf fm A 1.049 :Kama ..- ,fm 'Q N M 'X ,HW q .
