UNDERCLASSMEN '81 I UNI ORS In the year of 1980, the Junior Class pulled an ace out of the hole. They produced a Junior Carnival which turned out to be a smashing success. Later in the year, the class of '81 produced a Junior Play entitled Penny. CNeedless to say, they made a few pennies from this production.J Many weeks and many worries preceded the J unior-Senior Banquet and Prom, but when it finally all came together, it was a lot of fun for those involved. All in all, the Junior Class had quite an exciting year and it seems they stand ready and willing to fill the shoes of this year's graduating class. He is no longer a low-life freshman, yet not quite a super-dude upperclass- man. However this year's sophomores managed very well through these trying times. They strug- gled through NEDT tests and proved to themselves that studying pays off. Several of them did very well on varsity teams while others demonstrated leader- ship abilities in various clubs. As a class they worked together to organize a skating party and a money-making project - selling HHS mugs. With the variety of personalities in this class, the next two years are guaranteed to be successful for them. Mike Christensen Brad DeGarmo iiii 322 LRSX Q x, Tammy Elliott X Kaye Getting, Sec. It takes a lot of humility and tolerance. A freshman is the one you find hanging on a coatrack in the halls, being sprayed with the lawn sprinkler, or standing at the end of the lunch line. However, in spite of the many hardships a freshman must endure, there are some advantages to the high school way of life. In talking with some of the freshmen, they all agreed that High school is better than grade school. After all, there is a wider variety of classes, more teachers, better sports competition, and more social activi- ties. One freshman remarked that she liked being able to make new friends - especially guy friends. I don't even mind having more competition in chasing the guys, she said. It's 'funner' that way. SPIRIT WEEK The Pep Club planned an activity for each day of Spirit Week to promote enthusiasm and spirit for league and tournament bas- ketball games. Once again the week was a big success and every- body participated in a big way. The week started off in silence. The girls were forbidden to talk to the guys. The next day everyone signed each other's T-shirts. On Wednesday, HHS students wore crazy hats and funky-look- ing socks. Thursday everyone created spirit the 50's way. Drag- ons rocked around the clock in bobby sox, saddle oxfords, cash- mere sweaters, and leather jackets. National Blue and Gold Day wrapped up the spirit-filled week. On this day, students wore anything and everything they could find that was blue andfor gold - jewelry, hair ribbons, ties, scarves, and even some finger- nail polish and glitter. , . . n' ' .. They were glad for some outside help especially when it came time to climb the lad- ders. STUCO PM The '79-80 schoolyear was a successful one for the Student Council. After many years of failed attempts, they finally persuaded the school board to let the student body have a pop machine. They also sponsored a soup supper and a dance the night of the first home football game. The annual all-school Christmas party was also a Stuco sponsored event. Everyone enjoyed a morn- ing of exchanging gifts, singing caroles and laugh- ing with David Wiggins as Santa. The afternoon was spent roller skating at Pratt. The last main event for the year was the school picnic held at Big Springs. It was a day of fun and sun. The 1979-80 basketball season was an exciting one for the basketball girls and fans. For the first time in the history of girls basketball at Haviland High, the girls went to Sub-State. Going into Regional play with a record of 10 and 9, the girls were not expected to go as far as they did. However they were able to defeat Trinity and Cunningham to make it into the finals. Not satisfied with runners up of Regionals, the girls went on to beat Norwich in a close two point game and took the title of Regional Champs. FRUIT MARKET HAVILAND, KANSAS GD UWQQM Q E E Q?
