The time is at hand when Haverling must cease to be a reality in our minds and vanish to a memory of the past. We are here to pay our last common tribute to Haverling before we go out into the world to enter upon our separate life duties. At the mere thought of graduation we are filled with a boundless feeling of pride and joy, which is limited only by a feeling of reluctance in parting. Graduation marks the closing of an act in the great drama of life in which we are all playing a part, and the beginning of a new act. It is a most solemn ceremony. It inspires us with a feeling of reverence for the past, and with hope for the future. P But our minds will not long be occupied with thoughts of the immediate past. Rather, we shall be thinking seriously of the future, with all the joys and adventures it has in store for us. Because of the training received in Haverling we shall go forth into the world better fitted to cope with the problems of life, more competent to execute the duties of citizenship, and more confident in our ability to bear our share of life's burden. Graduation is a goal well worth striving for, and we may well be proud to have attained it. Yet we should not be content to have merely reached this goal. Let us use it as a basis to a still higher goal in education-one at which we may make our influence felt still more in the world about us. The value of a college education cannot be set too high. The greatest opportunities are Waiting for those who are trained for their profession in college. A college education cannot accomplish everything for us, it is trueg much will depend upon our own initiative and readiness to grasp opportunitiesg then we will appreciate the training we received in Haverling. W'e shall always attribute the cause of our success in part to the wonderful foresight and wisdom of the teachers of Haverling. They were ever interested in our success while we, at times, were in- different to it. They never lost sight of the great goal we were striving for and they urged us on when we, in momentary despair, would have abandoned all attempts to reach it. We hope their efforts have been rewarded in part, at least, by our success. When we leave the guiding hand of Haverling we shall enter a world strange to us, it will regard us with cold indifference, it is filled with unrelenting hardships and temptations-obstacles in the pathway to success. The honor and glory that we bring Haverling and ourselves will be measured by the extent to which we are able to utilize our training in overcoming these adversities. We are proud of Haverling. It is our duty to conduct ourselves so that Haverling will be proud of us. Our responsibility rests upon this duty. It is to us a most solemn pledge. We must keep faith and do our share. We can because we must. page I-wvizly-six THE HAVERLINGUIST Senior Clam Hiftory A few weeks after school began in Secptember, a senior meeting was called-everyone seemed happy CI wonder why?j. Mr. Lyman acre as Chairman until a President was elected. Our artist Lou Utter had the honor of being chosen. The following were also elected: Eudora CDO DOD Aldrich, Vice-President, Helen CLydj Thompson, Secretarygjames Cjimj Severance, Treasurer, Mildred CMillyD Van Dusen, Prophetg Elizabeth CBessieD Dalton, Poetg Melba CMelbD Bennett, Class Song Writerg Mary CD Nuding, Writer of Class Willg and Joseph Cjoel Ormsby, Historian. Our initial adventure of the year was a Senior party. On the first Friday night of October we met at the school house and pglroceeded to Fran Griswold's cottage on Lake Keuka. Chaperon? Of course, Miss Manevalg and t e coach was supposed to have been there. Everyone enjoyed himself- especially Pie and Miss Maneval. Next we decided to have benefit pictures in December and March to raise funds. In the meantime a bake sale was held. Soon Regents crept upon us keeping everyone busy for a while. g Lou decided to have our Prom during Easter week instead of in June, and it surely was a great success. The hall was decorated nicely. Many compliments were given to the people who aided in decoration and many said that it was the best dance that has ever been held in Bath. . After Easter vacation we were anxious to have our color fights. This year the time was limited to two days instead of a week Cperhaps it was a good ideaj. We put one over on the Juniors this year by hanging our colors the night before. Only a couple of Juniors seemed to interfere-and we did likewise with them. Those two boys Gabe and Fishy , yes, they both took a ride. The next morning at school we gave our opponents a farewell hand-shake and then the fun began. That night we planned to have a party and met at Pen Gleason's. Some Juniors got wise Csomething unusualj and gave us a little light. Finally, we journeyed to our last year's rendezvous at Lyd Thompson's, where we were visited by a few underclassmen aiding the Juniors. We sure had a good time except for losing Larry Sutton and Jack Smith, also breaking the railing off the porch again this year. But that was not all :-the next night the Juniors gave a party at the Commu- nity House at Unionville and we went too. We just took possession that night and also gave a few Juniors a ride. That was the end of a perfect night. During the next week everyjunior and Senior were friends again. The Senior boys had the honor of being the victors in the interclass basket ball, while the girls lost. The boys also won the interclass track meet. We then planned for the junior-Senior party, which put an end to our pleasure. Then we began studying for that important week in June-Regents! ! ! page twenty-seven THE HAVERLINGUIST . Propbeqf Oh, here comes the mail carrier! I wonder if he has any mail for me? Sure enough, a whole handful. I will look through them. .Here's the first one that catches my eye, one from Gertrude Lander. I knew it was from her by the postscript on it, Babcock Hollow. Yes, she's living there now, keeping house for Deacon Smith. Gertrude always did have the reputation of being the shortest woman who could hand the longest line, so I'll read it. Babcock Hollow, June 13, 1931. Dear Mildred: I haven't much time left but I'll have to drop you a few lines. A little gossip for you: You knew Ernest Risley and Cora Potter? Well, they were married in Savona by the Reverend Leslie Edsall. The unexpected always happens, doesn't it? Eloise Smith is taking up novelty dancing as a pastime now. And Mildred Kelly, I have heard, is floating on the sea of matrimony. The unlucky bite is Scott Ormsby, alias Joseph. You will never believe what I'm about to write now: Otto Putman, Ed Smith, and Jimmy Severance are making their reservations on the next freight that goes to Hollywood. Can't imagine them becoming movie actors, can you? I think they have other engagements. Leny Degrofl' is still waiting for the bus fare to Painted Post to get cheaper so she can go down oftener. That's the only way she'll ever get there. And Mildred, I went down to New York last September, went through The Rogue's Gallery, and here are some of the chromos I saw hanging there! Muriel Dudley, Frances Griswold, Bessie Dalton, and Anabel Coots. You know what put them there-their incessant talking in the Study Hall. As I was riding through Bath the other day, I noticed a sign in front of a house- Marion Thomas and Melba Bennett. Laundry done here. I believe the Chinese laundry is just about out of business. And I read in the morning's paper that the Dearlove Twins are with the Ziegfeld Follies. They are making quite a hit. . One of my friends called on me yesterday and this is what she told me :-Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Ackerson CMrs. Ackerson formerly Red Whitej are living quite happily in Prattsburg now, and are teaching their two children oratory. As I was glancing through the list of district school teachers the following names appeared: Eudora Aldrich, Edith Dudley, Verna Frey, Helen Thompson, Mary Piestrak, Marguerite Tucker, and Catherine Ward. I pity the poor pupils, don't you? According to the head line of the morning New York Times, the Misses Carolyn Blake and Oletha Shattuck are singing and dancing in one of the Night Clubs in New York City. Oh! here's a good joke: Nony ,Seager is still having her same old trouble, trying to decide whether she'd rather listen to a trumpet or a sax. Joe Sliney, after a long and comprehensive course in History, is now teaching in John Brownell's newly erected school in Avoca. Some of his pupils are Claude Braisted, Ernest Bulkley, Claire Carr, Dorothy Lewis, Carl Miller, Alvaro Lyke, and Knight Hamilton. Virginia Hoagland has retired to her home in Kanona, where she is engaged in carrying on the many social activities there, while the rest of our schoolmates, William Keyte, Mary Betty, Mary Nuding, and Helen Donderewicz are still in Bath keeping their eye on Louie Utter, so he doesn't attend the Hornell Fair more than once a year. Mildred, I guess that's about all the news I know now, so will say good-bye. As ever your friend, GERTRUDE. page 'twenty-eight THE HAVERLINGUIST Clays Poem We've Jtruggled for the honor we have won. Many times have we been undecided in our climb, and under the prodigious load of knowledge, become un- stable in our footing, but now that we are here, we smile. We owe to our teachers a great deal more than we can ever repay or express. It is they who have taken an interest in our work and made the irksomeness seem like play. Haverling, who first initiated our scholastic steps, we can not leave without lamenting, the hap- piness that we have enjoyed while within her walls will never be forgotten. And now as we go forth to enter into new fields of endeavor we feel that this enthusiasm engendered in our hearts will certainly spur us on to interminable success. Mr. President: It is with great pleasure, this afternoon, that I present to you this very famous old key which unlocks the chamber of wisdom in Haverlin . It was presented to us by the class of ,,7.7 and we have cherished and guarded it faithfully. We End that it has been a guiding jewel for our resent success. And now that this key is to belong to you, I can not let it go without a bit of advice, liecause I fear that you gay, kidnapping Juniors will stow it away some place and forget where you have put it. It will not bar the doors of the Community Grange Hall nor will it make your junior parties a success, but it might lock your eats safely up in a cupboard. Grave Seniors of Another Year, take this commemorated key and treat it as a wise old friend, because it is given to you with a loyal spirit and it will mean much to you in your last year in Haver- ling. ' We have been very happy here together, and now it is hard for us to say good-bye. Farewell, Seniors of To-morrow! Farewell, Haverling. zmior Response Mr. President: It is with sincere appreciation that we, the Class of Twenty-nine, accept this key which you have guarded so nobly in your Senior year. We will devote our entire attention to guarding this trust in order that We may End success. As to your advice, however, we feel that we are capable of keepin this beautiful key in mind, so that when we pass it on to the class of Nineteen-thirty it will have a Par brighter luster than it has even now. And as for the Community Grange, it is far better for us gay, kidnapping Juniors to use this key as a bar against the wrong doings of life, than it was for you grown-up Seniors to use it as a shield for your childish pranks. Mr. President: We realize that in giving this key to us you are leaving it in order that we may share in that friendship of knowledge which is the only road to success. Dear Seniors: As you go out along the highways and byways of life, we hope you will never forget the hapcpy days we have had here together, and as you are leaving, we, the Class of Twenty- nine, bid you od-speed and good-bye. iwagv thirty THE HAVERLINGUIST Senior Clary Will We, the Senior Class of Haverling High School, in the County of Steuben and State of New York, beg-ng of sound mind and memory, do make and declare this our last Will and Testament. We bequeath as ollows: To the Junior Class as a whole, a Community House for future class parties. The fuel to be coal, not wood. To Mr. Beilby, an extra study-hall period in which to make up the sleep lost at Miss Xyz's. We see his making use of the social hints given to him by the Class of '11. To Miss Schweitzer, some bird seed which she can feed to the Senior Study Hall to produce a greater quantity and a better quality of singers. To Reuben Oldfield, the honor of filling his brother's place as The Sheik of I-Iaverlingf' To Homer and Hughes Dearlove, a tandem so they will not delay operations in Haverling during another year. To Doris Dudley and Margaret Bryan, the requested real estate, The Book of Knowledge , hoping their averages will raise at least ten points. To Angeline Tharp, a book on salesmanship, feeling sure it will help her in her quest. To Helen White, two weights so that she can hold down her position on the Basketball Court. To Treiber Sutton a twin brother, thus smoothing over the difficulties between Hazel Sims and Katharine Phillips. ' To Vivian Whitford, a recipe for Kaphlumpha pies. To Le Roy White, a book in which he will had how to overcome bashfulness. To Gabriel Castrilli, a map of the roads from Babcock Hollow to Bath. Q To Marshall Walker, some shoes, wishing him better luck next year. To Leo Bates, a request that the class of '19 protect him better in the trials of next year. To Mr. Vanderhoef, an extra padlock for his office door and several for the windows. To Edna Liljequist, a book How to Control Tempersn, to be studied before the next color rushes. To Miss Sedgwick and Miss Thomas, diplomas which we believe will help them succeed in ob- taining their next positions. We feel sure that they have earned them by hard work. To James Dicandia, the athletic field on which to regain his lost strength. We recommend the shot put. To Gertrude Cobb we leave a package of gum, hoping Prof. won't catch her. She knows what the consequences will be. To Ruby Smith, the privilege of winning next year's speaking contest. To Miss Pearlman we leave a package of gum so she will not disturb the study-hall in the future with her lectures. To Coach Brownell, two, perhaps we should say three, keys, one of which will fit the nurse's office, the others, the doors to the homemaking department. These are to enable him to have a little peace in one without being interrupted by the other two. To Miss Sedgwick, Miss Thomas, and Mr. Lyman, we leave our love, respect, gratitude, and prayer for their future success. Our gratitude to you, dear teachers, is greater than words can express. We hereby appoint our long silent friend, Mr. Skelton, residing behind the laboratory door, the chief executor of this, our first, last, and only Will and Testament. CLASS or 1918. In witness: W hereof we hereunto subscribe our names the twenty-fourth day ofjune, in the year one thousand nine hundred and twenty-eight. HELEN THoMPsoN. KAPHLUMPHA Wnrrronn. page thirty-one THE HAVERLINGUIST Valedictory Friends, Teachers, Classmates: We, the Class of 1918, are here today, as the graduates before us have been, to bid our last fare- well to Haverling. We are about to enter a new world. In this new world there will be much new opportunity, much new hope, much new happiness. But there will be, also, much new responsibility. We may feel that now, now at last, we have attained the golden key that will open all doors to usg that all difficulties must fade before the vigorous onslaught of our optimism, that all problems must dissolve before the bright sun of our enthusiasm. We have had a vision and dreamed a dream-the awakening must be as glorious as the dream! The world welcomes us with open arms-we shall find a helping hand at every turn! I-Ieartily do we endorse the sentiment of Shakespeare's Miranda: O brave new world that has such people in it. But is the dream altogether selfish? Does this new world ask nothing of us, its latest citizens? Does it not look to us too, for help, for renewed vigor to fight its battles, for fresh hope to drown its disappointments? There are many ways in which we can earn the right to take our place in this new world. A great source of disappointment for some of its brave citizens is the lack of interest on the part of many educated people, in the government of their country. It is as much the duty of every citizen to serve the country which has given him his opportunities, as for a son or daughter to repay the parent who has inspired his childhood with hope and blessed it with all the resources at his command. To vote intelligently is a great duty and a great privilege. It is a high trust that is reposed in us, the torch is pressed into our hands-we must hold it high- we cannot shirk the task. A few more years of preparation, whether in school, in business, or in the home, and we will be the voters of America-the hope of the world. We shall then remember the words of Lowell: New occasions teach new duties, Time makes ancient good uncouth, Thy must upward still and onward IfVho would keep ahreast of Truth. Lo, before us gleam her campjfresf lfVe ourselves must Pilgrims he, Launch our Nlayflower and steer holdly Through the desperate winter sea. Pilgrims in the new world, good luck and farewell! In anticipation of this we organized earlier than has been the custom. To pilot this most distinctive class we chose James DiCandia, president, Gertrude Cobb, vice-presidentg Myrtle Bulkley, secretaryg and Vivian Whitford, treasurer. Undoubtedly because of ,?.9'S unusual capabilities, it was left to her to standardize aring, pin, and stationery design for Haverling. This we have done with our accustomed zeal and good judgment, and it is our greatest desire that our successors will be pleased with our selectlon. After a careful survey of the senior class, it was found necessary for us this year to furnish the valedictorian. At the price of our most capable secretary, we made the sacrifice. We then laid the responsibility of performing these duties upon Agnes Berger. I Much deliberation showed that in selecting colors, two would not suffice. Our colors must be tri-colored, to portray a three-fold importance: black, in mourning for those of our number who left us to become seniors, silver, as a reward for those whose ability makes them conspicuous, red, as a danger signal to those whose ambition is wont to lag. In former years, the Prom has been conducted by the Junior Class alone. This year, on account of the valuable experience they would gain, we generously allowed the seniors to help. Perhaps this is why it was so much more successful than usual. A g During the month of April, it became necessary to defend' our colors. The seniors outnumbered our ranks and we deemed it necessary to remove a few of their members. One boy, however, became homesick after a night's absence and we refrained from further deportationp On April 15th, as an additional kindness to the seniors, we endeavored to liven u their party a little. Ask them if we did. The next night our festivities ran along very smoothly. all except the victrolaj until the seniors decided to return our favor of the night before-and in full measure. In our memories what a night of scramble, noise, and confusion that is! And yet, though windows may have been broken and heads may have been bruised, no thought of enmity lingers, and it is only with a feeling of loss and regret that we say good-bye to the class of '18. page thirty-seven Q THE HAVERLINGUIST Senior-Junior Prom .-,S-,liiiil-HlNl'f Tr-mv IQES 3 THIS PROM is JUST WH' THHT5 BECFHJSE THE JUINHORS orouv'T HFNE ANY THING TO oo wm-4 GT WONDERFUL L A LJ? lava, The Senior-Junior Prom was held this year during Easter vacation, instead of after regents as has formerly been the custom. It was the most successful Prom which has ever been held. It was successful from a linancial standpoint as well as the number of people which it attracted. The best feature was the orchestra. It is not common that an orchestra as good as Hughie Barrett's of Rochester is found at a High School Prom. A great deal of credit for the factors which made for the Prom's success g that is, the excellent orchestra, the beautiful decorations, and the holding of the Prom in the municipal buildingg is due to Louis Utter and to the Prom Committee of the Senior Class. page tlzirty-eiglzt THE HA VERLINGUIST Doris Allen Marian Anderson Pauline Bennett Lyman Bowles Beulah Bradley Burnett Bronson Ruth Brooks Mary Caffrey Luella Carr Mary Castrilli Charles Clark Lawrence Clark Thomas Dalton Elwyn Derrick Mary Di Candia Edwin Donderewicz Claude Drake Genevieve Abbey Calvin Blake Ellen Boileau Martin Bowes Clifton Bronson Elizabeth Brown Blanche Burlingame Thelma Butler Sheldon Carey Harry Case Dorothy Darcy Alfred Dassance Alfred Decker Elizabeth Derrick Dora Edsall Golcla Emerson Elmo Fay Alice Fisk Bessie Fisk Gordon Foster Gertrude Fox Lenora French mi t f ' ' 2 5.09 -Eel W.: rafkw Julia French Robert Fuller Dominic Gabrielli Evelyn Gelder Stanley Glowczyk Carmita Gray Laura Hamilton Harold Hand Lenora Hardenbrook Edwin Keeney John Ketchell Helen Liteer Edna Lyke Esther Lyke Nathan Morehouse Pauline Parker Helen Pindjak F-fd' 4 aw- -Q-ep. There were sixteen young people from the surrounding towns of Hammondsport, Avoca, Prattsburg, Kanona, and Bath. This number was soon diminished to fourteen, when ill health made it necessary for two mem- bsrs to drop out. jvagv forty THE HA VERLINGUIST The Steuben Count ' Fair was the first event to interru t our studious routine. Naturally the sole 5 . . . . 1 purpose of the attendance of prospective teachers was the study of rural exhibits. Without a doubt much of practical value was gained by this study. Early in the firsthsemester an English Club was formed and the class was organized with Vernelia Tharp as president, Maynard Armstrong as vice-president, and Evelyn Hitchcock as secretary and treasurer. The duties of the last named office were hardly of such proportions as to require the services of an assistant. During, the autumn some very interesting as well as educational work was done by the class in scoring rural school houses. The Little Red School House was a comparatively unfamiliar situation to some of us who had never attended one. The holiday-time afforded a much needed rest for the majority of us, and some preparation for the strenuous two weeks immediately preceding January examinations. Of course, we were all extremely anxious to try regents, since we were to have a new type of examination and little fear was felt as to its difficulties. At last they were over and we were ready, it is to be hoped, for the next semesters' work. Q ' On Tuesday morning, January third, with renewed faith in ourselves and our ability to conquer all curricular difficulties, we took up five new subjects: geography, sociology, hygiene, music, and home-making. Our time was spent chiefly on these subjects CI hopej, until Wednesday, February fourteenth, when the class attended meetings for one day during the Farm and Home Week, at Cornell. ' A bus was hired for the occasion, and the class left Bath before six A. M. We arrived at Ithaca before nine o'clock, giving us time to register at Roberts Hall and to attend the first lecture. By dividing into groups andeach grou attending a different lecture, which was later reported in class, we gained much of practical value. ome of the lecturers were authors of books we had studied during the first semester, and naturally their talks possessed more than ordinary interest for us. So zealous had we been in the pursuit of knowledge that the absence of one member was not noted when the class started for home. U on our return to the campus the missing one was discovered in the pursuit of red-skins rather than o knowledge. The timely intervention of Miss Manktelow saved the Indians, and General Custer's avenger was returned to our number. The ride home through the rain proved enjoyable, the class arriving late in the evening. One of the class claims that he awoke on the way home and heard snores-possibly they were echoes. The six weeks spent in practice teaching in Haverling gave us some appreciation of the delights as well as of the responsibilities of teaching. Needless to say, the memory of and experience gained during the six weeks will be of inestimable value to us in our teaching careers. Directly after Easter we spent two weeks teaching inthe rural schools. These were in some ways the most enjoyable two weeks of the whole year and very valuable from several standpoints. May second'we spent in securing positions for the coming school year. Nearly all were fortunate and by the end of the week situated satisfactorily. We feel much pleased that through the competent guidance of Miss Manktelow and her co- workers, Miss Martin, Miss Cromwell, Miss Schweitzer, and Miss Homer we have brought toa suc- cessful close a year fraught with happy memories of Old Haverling. . WARREN R. ABBEY. page forty-one THE HAVERLINGUIST Prine Speaking - . The Willis Prize Speaking Contest held each year is open to all seniors. The rhetor- icals held during the year are considered as an elimination for this contest, so the three highest boys and the three highest girls, as scored in rhetoricals, are the speakers in the contest. This year Winifred White won iirst place in the girls competition, while Lawrence Ackerson was the victorious boy . Myrtle Bulkley represented Haverling in - the county speaking contest. She won first . place in the semi-finals held in Hornell and second place in the finals which were held in the Haverling High School auditorium. Since the beginning of this contest, . which was inaugurated in 1917. by Mr. Willis, its winners have acclaimed many honors at Alfred and in the county. Haver- ling has won eight first places, one second, and three thirds at Alfred since that date. During this same time four first places and one second have been won by Haverling in - the county speaking contest. Mn. CLARENCE WILLIS Mnftenl Concert A new feature of the Haverling musical organizations was initiated during the past year. A con- cert was given by the Girls' Glee Club, the High School Orchestra, and the Junior Orchestra on May 18th. Previous to this, people little realized the extent to which the musical talent of Haverling has been developed. The concert's success as an entertainment was exceedingly great and those who at- tended were firmly convinced of the quality of Haverling's musicians as Well as the ability of Miss Schweitzer, under whose direction the organizations have succeeded. HdU6VltWg,J Stneienty' Asyoeintton The Students' Association of Haverling High School has functioned with a great smoothness throughout the past year. Three new amendments have been added to the constitution. In considering the financial situation it can be said that it has improved and compared with the success of the basket- ball season it was better than could be expected. The oflicers of the Association are: HOMER DEARLOVE . . . Prexnient MARY NUDING . Vice-Prexieient J.AMEs SEVERANCE . Secretary MR. D. H. LYINIAN . BROWNELL Pbysiml Dirfrmr Haverling has two distinguished social or- ganizations: the Hi-Y Club and the Girl Reserves Club. They are excellent organizations, both of which maintain high ideals of scholarship and fellowship. The Glee Club and Orchestra have accom- plished much during the past year. The Athletic Teams have won and lost games. In the following pages you will find pictures and something of these groups' accomplishments. page forty-three THE HA VERLING UIST Q, sl A 110+- Fim raw, fram left to rigbr: Ernest Bulkley, Charles Clark, Mr. Seagers, James Severance, Claire Easterbrook, jerry Simonson. .Yeraud row: Marshall Walker, Knight Hamilton, Leo Bates, Clair Carr, Carl Miller, Frederick Beeman, Leslie Edsall, Edwin Keeney, Maynard Armstrong. Hi-Y Club The lirst work of the Hi-Y Club at the beginning of school was to direct the freshmen to the various classes and to act as an information bureau. A great many friends were made by the club in doing this. Their next work was the helping to stage the successful Hallowe'en party. During the past year the organization has been taken over under the jurisdiction of the school with Mr. Seagers as advisor. This change brings the work of the club in closer contact with the functioning of the school. Its aims, to romote scholarship and to create a greater fellowship among students, have been greatly rewarde by their work, especially the creation of a greater fellowship. The organization had a basketball team which was victorious in the two games that were played. They won over Prattsburg by a score of 16-11g and over Savona by a score of 2.3-8. The scores and the games mean very little compared with the spirit which was created among the students in practice. Their season's activities were climaxed by a banquet held at the Hotel Wagner on the fifteenth of May. New ofiicers were elected for the coming year. They are: President, jerry Simonsong Vice- President, Leo Bates, Secretary and Treasurer, Marshall Walker. Mr. Seagers is the Hi-Y advisor for the coming year. The work of the organization has been so successful in the past year that there is little doubt that it will become a growing club in which the young men may find the satisfaction of their desire to associate with other young men. fagr forty-four THE HAVERLINGUIST Einrt row, from left ta right: Mary Louis McGlenn, Helen Thompson, Janet Smith, Miss Williams, Frances Gris- wold, Roberta Dudley, Marguerite Tucker, Virginia Hoagland. .Yecond raw: Aldine Stewart, Vivian Whitford, Myrtle Bulkley, Eudora Aldrich, Annabel Coots, Gwendolyn Lewis, Rosalee Bull, Catharine Ward. Girl Reserves Club The Girl Reserves Club started with a meeting to make lans for the annual Girl Reserves-Hi-Y Hallowe'en party. This party was perhaps the most success ul ever had. There were stunts given by both organizations, a grand march also put much spirit in the party. They held their recognition services for the new members at the home' of their former advisor, Mrs. Chamberlin. Mary Betty, the president, had charge of the meeting. In January a health meeting occupied the program. Mary Betty entertained the girls with a supper, after which Annabel Coots, Eudora Aldrich, and Frances Griswold dramatized a health pantomime entitled A College Girl's Day . Miss Cromwell also gave a first aid talk. ' Bessie Dalton gave the girls a Valentine party at her country home. At this meeting the new ofiicers were elected: Frances Griswold was elected president, Annabel Coots, vice-president, Janet Smith, treasurer, and Mary L. McGlenn, secretary. e Miss Williams, Helen Thompson, Annabel Coots, and Frances Griswold represented the Haverling Girl Reserves at the mid-winter conference at Syracuse. The club's activities ended with a party at Dorothy Lewis' home on the first of June. Mrs. Lewis planned an enjoyable supper which was followed by a vocational talk given by Miss Homer. The Girl Reserves have had a very successful year and the probabilities are that next year will be even more successful and more active than last, with the Girl Reserves a school organization. page forty-Jive THE HAVERLINGUIST s, ',a-iii , fag , KMM, ,Nw Stmzdilzg near the left it Miss Schweitzer. First, the school musicians are no longer indifferent to the quality of music which they render, the best that they have is put into their playing. Second, the student body has shown an appreciation of its or- chestra in a way that has done much for its flattering success. At Fredonia the Haverling Orchestra made its greatest conquest in competition with orchestras from other schools in Western New York and Pennsylvania. Many of these schools had much larger student bodies and orchestral instrumentation than Haverlingg but even in this strong competition the Haverling musicians were awarded the highest honors. Banquets, concerts, and selections for various school activities constituted the remainder of the year's program. The 1917-'18 season's repertoire included the works of such master composers as Victor Herbert, Keler-Bela, Shubert, Schumann, Sarasote, Sousa, and others. Under the talented and efhcient director- ship of Miss Schweitzer the orchestra was able to give a highly creditable interpretation of these masters. page fnrly-.vi.r THE HAVERLINGUIST Fim' Raw, from left to rigbt: Janet Smith, Mary Castrilli, Gertrude Landers, V iviau Whitforrl, Madge Carey, Miss Schweitzer, Dorothy Ritzel, Naomi Jenkins, Iva Ormsby, Roberta Dudley. Glee Club s On September 13, 1917, Miss Schweitzer called the Galli Curcis and the Mary Gardens of Haverling together to form a Glee Club. Unfortunately there was no place for the many Carusos , for it was a girls' organization. We began our musical year by singing one of our old favorites, Theres a Home in the Heart of the Hill . Our first new songs were To a Wild Rose and Trees . Later, Miss Schweitzer surprised us with some others. The climax of our musical career was our first appearance, in which we entertained Cat least we thought we clidD the Junior and Senior High School at one of the usual assemblies. Our next social event was the fulfilling of an invitation to sing at the Willis Prize Speaking Contest. Last but not least, a concert was given on May 18th by the Orchestra and Glee Club. The latter were resplendent in monogramed white dresses. C . We all feel that through the help of Miss Schweitzer we have accomplished much in the wayof developing musical talent. page forty-seven y THE HAVERLINGUIST l Pint Raw, left tolriglvt: Norah Belle Seagerg Mildred Kelly, Captaing Esther Percival. Girly' Basketball The Haverling Girls' Basketball Team experienced a rather successful season, winning six games and losing seven. Two records were broken this year and consequently they do not feel so grieved at the losses. One of the broken records was the defeat of the C. F. A. team on its own court. This game re- sulted in a score of zo-15. It was the first defeat in two years that the C. F. A. girls had met on their home court, arid the hrst ever experienced at the hands of the Haverling girls at Corning. The other broken record was the defeat of the Dansville girls by a score of 2,4-18, this is the only defeat that has ever been handed to these players on their own court by the Bath girls.
