THE BLUE AND THE GRAY CLASS HISTORY LOUISE HONEYMAN HE WAR OF 1919 broke out on Jan uary 19 The 1mmed1ate cause was Mr Fernalld s announcement from the desk that the members of the Semor Class would meet 1n the drawmg room after school We met' The flght was short and sharp many wounds havmg been both gn en and 16CE1VCd as Ju11us Caesar puts 1t Let me say r1ght here that Ju11us Caesar s mllrtary ab1l1ty was never fully tested he never engaged 1n a class rneetmg After the smoke of battle had cleared away the fo1low1ng casualtxes appeared For pres1 dent Jesse D1ldme uce pres1dent Rae Dudley secretary and treasurer Samuel Noble prophet Jenme Scofield wr1ter of class song Margaret Murray poet John Akerman wr1ter of w1ll Harry R1s1ng h1s tor1an Loulse Honeyman For a few days there was peace barr1ng some un1mportant rows w1th the Jun1ors just to keep our hand 1n One dark mght abraye scout of our class eluded all foes 1n the shape of Jumors n1ght watchmen and Mr Coll1ns and by means of a short ladder and tall nerve cllmbed through alaboratory wmdow opened the door to h1s comrades and decorated the h1gh school hall w1th the blue and gray and gold That amused us and bothered the l1ttle folks The next n1ght they had to put the1r colors up but as they had ne1ther lad der nor nerve they teased Mr Coll1ns to let them enter boldly by the door We d1dn t mterfere we hate to make ch11dren cry Our first classJoll1f1cat1on was a coastmg party out at Nathan1el Stanton s We had such a good time that we actually forgot to ight and almost forgot to come home' The second ser1ous engagement of the class lrnean the war of 1912 was over our motto The flrst thmg we knew the boys came chargmg down on a perfectly peaceful class meetmg w1th the motto Damn the Torpedoes' Go Ahead Now that was all rlght for Farragut but we g1rls could hardly be expected to l1ke 1t and we sa1d so The boys sa1d they wouldn t have any n1ce lrttle candy motto t1ed up 1n p1nk r1bbon So the light was on The torpedoes won ofcourse and then havmg proved that they could have the1r way the boys assured us that they d1dn t want lt and let us choose a perfectly sweet motto Fmd a Wav or Make One Then we ho1sted a flag of truce and danced all one even1ng under 1ts folds We were about to extend the truce 1nto a permanent peace when another battle was prec1p1tated oy er the quest1on of our Jumor play fund As no clocks flag poles prctures or statu ary seemed to be needed some of us wanted to use the money for a good t1me a week on Keuka And some of us d1dn t' The D1ds and D1dn ts h ad a be 1ut1ful scrap VVhen lt yy as oyer the D1ds held the held and the D1dn ts were 1n full rout But as usual when the uctory xx as xy on nobody wanted 1t W really don t tare xx hat we fight about 1f we only fight Thms was thc greatest battle of the war l mean the cl 1ss Sxnce then there has been some Sk1I'1Il1bl111lQ but no general engage ments l hen the .Tumors needed a l1ttle at tentlon They had a p1cn1c and d1dn t ask us But we went' Three of our boys swam rrght 1nto the1r camp and made thmgs pretty l1y ely for a feyy 111111L1fBS Our boys say those Jumor gxrls can fight' VVell they had to to save the1r 1ce cream Tnc1dentally Gala tea say s that Jesse 19 no lady The war of 1912 IS ended A treaty of peace s1gned sealed and and t1ed Wlth wh1te r1b bon w1ll be accepted by us Wednesday even mg and all our quarrels and rows and scraps and hghts w1l1 be nothmg but sweet memor1es We have a br1ght poet named Spraker And you may just bet she s no fak1r She s1ts up all mght Her verses to wrlte T111 her mother would just l1ke to shake her A COMPLICATION lt was qu1te a select set That at Raymond Jones met And such a prom1s1ng mght Put church soc1a1s out of s1ght Harry QF jchanced Charlotte QU 1 to see Broke h1s date w1th M1r1am lt And they went to Rosebud s home But Mlflam went to the church alone Thmkrng just to have some fun Later to the church H run But M Spled hxm at the door So he bought her box and more For he had to take HER home Charlotte wa1t1ng all alone Who 1n angry tones exclanned Lynn Kellogg you re to blame .
