The Haverhill High School Debating club debated against representatives of other schools during the 1939-40 debating season on the question of public ownership of the railroads and on a policy of isolation for the United States. The club members, guided by Raymond Hutchinson, club adviser, and led by ,lohn B. Nichols, won and lost debates during the sea- son, and gained a knowledge of public speaking which can never be taken from them. Underclass members of the or- ganization showed qualities which well may be developed to the benefit of the group by future contact with the debating society. 104

' K. 'ea SENIOR PLAY CAST TDP Row: Alan Cole, Robert Goodwin, Robert Sherry, George Alperin, John Wrenn MlDDl.l1 Row: Paul Wood, Shirley Graham, Raymond Tye, Lucille Axerill, jacqueline Boucher I' mcls Hogan, john Colocousis. BOTTOM Row: Priscilla Moylan, Adrina Danelian, Crawford Thayer, Dorothy Cleary, Mr Harriman Transplanting in January a Broadway and London stage hit to the auditorium of the Haverhill High School, the Sen- ior Clans presented Bachelor Born to a capacity audience as its contribution to the long line of annual dramatic pro- ductions given by pupils. Bachelor Born, known on the professional stage as The Housemasterf' written by lan Hay, was considered to be one of the most ambitious produc- tions given by a Haverhill Senior Class. Credit for the suc- cessful outcome of the play should be given to Paul P. Har- riman, Whose ability as a director enabled him to develop the dormant qualities of seventeen Seniors into something suggestive of histrionic attainment. 103 0 L nv ga 1 ,IQ
