Step by step he proceeds from Toronto to the Pacific Coast, first with the Red River Expedition 1869-70, under the late Lord Wolseley and later with the first contin- gent of the North West Mounted Police. He tells the story of the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railroad, when, on many occasions he was called upon to settle disputes between the navvies and their foremen. In the first days of the gold rush to the Yukon Valley, Colonel Steele was in command of the N.W.M. Police, and he gives many interesting pictures of camp-life. He took to South Africa the famous Strathcona ' s Horse, and returned with the knowledge that of all the colonial contingents none outshone that which he commanded. Many times he has been mentioned in despatches and publicly thanked for his services. He tells in these pages of buffalo-hunts, battles with the Indians, rounding up horse-thieves, settling disputes with the early settlers, whilst between the lines can be read the record of a soldier who has met with many adventures and shown a remarkable tact and endurance.
