We, the members of the Third Form, successfully weathered the transition from the Middle School to the Upper School. This year, due to the greater amount of required work, we were forced to discontinue our childish pranks of previous years and assume a more mature attitude toward school. The importance of good grades for college admisson became apparent to us during the latter part of this past year. Most of us ioined the many clubs and eagerly took part in their activities. On the athletic fields the Freshman class held its own. The maiority of us participated on the junior teams, and a few of us managed to garner positions on varsity squads. By viewing the Third Form's athletic and academic accomplishments this year, one can readily see it is a very well rounded class. With the senior class officers at the helm, the Council set up sev- eral committees to perform necessary functions around the school. The lunch room committee, the announcement committee, and the messenger committee were the best-known of these groups which were formed by the students and spon- sored bythe Student Council. The Student Council undertook a major proiect early in the year when it decided to revise the Council's constitution and bring it up to date. The Student Council of 1960 has indeed had a successful year in handling the problems which arise unexpectedly in school life. as '-rf Standing D Bunting Dr Severmghaus Dr Newhall P Burnham Satrmg Buell Walton C Walters T Moxey CUM LAUDE R 'fc Srandmg Mr Allen W Oduorne Blum Sabol Rea Buell Slrtmg Treasurer Guerrmn Secretary P Burnham Presldenl Buntmg Vnce PresndenYW Howson SIGNET SOCIETY 'Cr' Standing Mr Byerly Burnham Sabol Rea Sitting Boericke Guerrini Winn Odiorne Gawthrop P Bartle S Wilson Editor-in-Chief Burnham HALIGOLUK STAFF EdffOf-iN-Chief ,...,,,,.,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Philip Burnham Sports Editors ,,,.,,,-,,,,A , ,AA,,,,,,,,,Y,,,, , Woodward Odiorne John Rea Activities Editors ,A,,,,,,,,,,V,,, vvv,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,A, ,,,,,,, P a U I Bartle Seniors Editors ,,,Y,,,,, A,YYY,,,,,, ,,,,Y,,, Features Editor A,,,,,,,,,Y,,,, Photography Manager Photographer ,,,.,,,,,,, F6CUlty Advisor ,,,,,YY,,,,,, V, Y,Y,YY,,, W 64 Stephen Wilson , Robert Gawthrop Richard Winn Stephen Sabol ,, AA,,,, James Boericke , ,, Peter Guerrini Mr. Donald H. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB PRESIDENT GUERRINI T One of the most popular extracurricular activities ot The Haver- ford School is photography. With Mr. Byerly as advisor, the Photography Club has broadened its activities to include talks by outside speakers and a display of the winning photos in the Kodak National Schoolboy Contest. This year, as in the past, darkroom techniques were taught to the new members. The darkroom was open to members for their own use. Also, there were exhibits by the members ot their pictures and slides. Under the leadership of President Peter Guerrini, Vice-Pres- ident Sanford Crane and Program Chairman Jay Powell, the club has many plans for the future. These include plans to have the club do a much larger share of the photographic work for the Haligoluk. l 8 I ......-b- ,,,..,11 ' Bug Dance' The three stooges De P bremh Intense studyw e Burnham and furry fnend Any Mounds? At least forty boys attended each practice session. This large group con- sisted mostly of seniors, sixteen of whom were lettermen from the 1958 season. In the season's opener, a strong Ford team defeated the Frankford team, 14-O. In the second game, the team lost its first game at the hands of a strong Hill School eleven, 30-l4. However, the Big Red bounced back the following Saturday to defeat Williamson Trade, 8-6. In the next three games, the Fords played well, but dropped Inter-Ac clashes to Penn Charter, 14-O, Malvern Prep, 22-8, and Germantown Academy, 22-20. Coach Prizer faced the season with only three players returning from last year's varsity. The rec- ord of games won and games lost does not re- flect the fighting spirit shown by this year's team. As the season progressed the starting lineup developed with Bunting and Allen at for- wards, Wilkening at center, and Dixon and Lyons at guards. Captain Bunting led the team in scor- ing with a season average of 17.3 points per game, making him one of the top scorers in the Coaches, Prizer and Bo lash discuss strategy. Bo D xon with a one hander Inter-Academic League. Second high scorer was Lyons. Bunting and Wilkening were the leading rebounders,Dixon and Allen operated well in the back court- The high points of the season were the two victories over Friends Central and the first Malvern game. The scores of the Friends Central games were 52-42 and 50-AO. The Malvern game was a thriller all the way, with the score al- ways close. We trailed at the end of the first quarter, overcame the deficit, held a four-point margin at the half, and were ahead by two at the end of the third quarter. The Fords could not maintain the slim lead and Malvern won in the last minute by the score of 45 to 43. Mal- vern went on to become this year's Inter- Ac champs. Many of these boys had learned to scull and sweep while training for Fall Crew, which produced a crew with much depth and power. i il By rowing eight miles six days a week, under the excellent guidance of Coach Fred Leonard and Captain Fred Barclay, the Crew hoped to capture many titles. GOLF COACH AUSTIN and CAPTAIN ONTHANK This year's golf team, with the inspir- ing leadership of Captain Onthank and the fine aid of Coach Austin, had a suc- cessful season. The first match, with Val- ley Forge was a Haverford victory. lt was followed by matches with Princeton, Penn, Hill and Peddie. ln all there were I4 matches. Several returning lettermen provided the nucleus of the team. The remaining positions were filled by hopeful and tal- ented newcomers. Those who were not able to play on the team nevertheless helped with their fine spirit and enthusi- asm. Also, they obtained much valuable practice. Since most of this year's team is made up of underclassmen, Coach Austin looks forward to an equally successful season next year. qv. . . 3 ' -J-, ' - r Q 2, X, fry I 95, ff, ,. A 5, in Lf.
