Charles S. Crosman served as the first headmaster and it was un- der his direction in 1903, that the school moved to its present location, a move necessitated by overcrowded conditions. The new campus featured a gymnasium with a bas- ketball cage, locker rooms, and a swimming pool fthe first in any Philadelphia schoolj. In 1906 fire destroyed the Oaks, but this was rebuilt and that building re- Wilson Hall, 1936 Crosman Hall today mained until 1955. During the period from 1928 to 1930, two significant advancements were made. First the old Junior School was purchased, second, donations by Joseph B. Ryan made possible the present gym- nasium. From that time until 1950, when the new wings were built, the school remained virtually unchanged. In 1955 the Oaks was stripped down and remodeled making the modern Crosman Hall. Another advance- ment was marked this year with the completion ot the .Junior School, an advancement which brings to a close Haverford's modernization program. Why do I spend SIO on purely recreatuonal pleasure and guve only 5Oc to the Communuty Fund? Why dont I keep my shoes polushed my haur combed and my person neat? Why do I so often postpone the doung of the necessary when experuence has shown that thus creates unhappy sutuatuons'P Why do I lack the courage un the face of socual pressures to stand by a con vuctuon'P Why do I resort to vulgaruty and profanuty'? Is thus the only way I can get people to pay attentuon'P In short why dont I extend thus lust some rauny Saturday nught and maul ut to the Headmaster? Thus mught take care of the messages for a good many years to come Or lust hand them to hum when I return as an alumnus for lunch un the cafeterua'P I know I am always welcome You could not be more rught Haverford us your School and I say thank you to the Senuor Class for all the good that you have guven to your Alma Mater ff! Many boys who were outstanding in school spirit and loyalty did much to help this class to be one of the best at Haverford. On September 8, sixty-seven boys started classes with many new teachers. For English we all had Mr. Woodward, under whose guidance we read A Tale of Two Cities and Julius Caesar. Mr. Byerly and Mr. Briner Hamilton, secretary-treasurer, Wilson, president, Dixon, vice- presidentg Mr, Byerly, faculty advisor, 44 taught us math. Many elective courses such as Biology, Latin, Modern European History, German, French, and Spanish rounded out our curriculum. Our class had a few boys playing on varsity teams, but most played on the junior squads. All these teams did very well, showing that the class was well repre- sented on the athletic fields. ln extracurricular activities, the Fourth Form was active. Members of the form ioined many clubs and are looking forward to assuming leadership in these clubs in the next two years. The most popular clubs were the Glee Club, the Polemics Society, and the Nat- ural Science Club. Our class officers were Steve Wilson, president, Bo Dixon, vice-president, and Ricky Hamilton, secretary- treasurer, who represented the class on the Student Council. This year was very successful for the Sophomore Class, and it should do equally as well during the re- maining two years. Back Row: J. Most of the members of the Third Form have done very well in their first year in the Senior School. Al- though the work is harder and requires more serious thought, most of the students are doing as well as last year. The ample study-halls and the choice of sub- iects make the increased work load easier to handle. All of the boys hope to further increase their scholastic standards throughout the rest of their years in the Senior School. With the aid of Mr. Austin, our faculty advisor, the rest of the teachers, and the older students, the class has quickly become established in the Senior School. Last spring, the class elected Bill Reed as president and Eddie Stringer as vice-president. Besides serving as class officers, these boys represent their class in the student council. Throughout the two years spent in Crosman Hall, the class has looked forward to the Senior School clubs, and this year, most of the boys have ioined at least one. The Third Form French Club, the Hoyle Club and the various science clubs are the most popular with the Third Form. A small number of boys have also joined several other clubs. The class of i962 has always excelled in the various branches of sports and hopes to continue Haverford's successful sports history when its members take their places on the varsity teams. ln the classroom or on the athletic fields, the boys in the Third Form have always done their best, and they will continually improve during the next three years in the Senior School. There were eighty students in First Form and eighty-three in Second Form. Because of this in- creased enrollment over last year, two new teachers, Mr. Tatta, who teaches Geography and Science, and Mr. Lawson, who teaches French and Latin, were added to the faculty. The Student Council was a prominent part of Cros- man Hall this year. The First Form elected nine repre- sentatives and the Second Form elected seven. At their first meeting, the group met their faculty advisors, Mr. Allen and Mr. Parsons, and elected Grafton Reeves as their president. Then the group planned their work for the year and successfully carried it out. 46 The boys in the Middle School distinguished them- selves very well on their respective teams during the fall and summer. ln the winter the Middle School held its annual intramural program in which all the boys participate. The boys are divided into teams which compete against each other in gym, volleyball, basket- ball, and swimming. The boys and faculty members considered this past year a very fine one both academically and athletically. It is apparent that these respective forms will improve themselves proportionately as they progress through The Haverford School. L51 ? V - , , f : gl fa Sal, 5 pl . Q , V 6' f Ei? WEBBER NEWXOLD THE JUNIOR SCHOOL Since the ground-breaking at Commencement time last June, the new Junior School building has progressed by leaps and bounds, until now classes are being held in it. This milestone marks the end of a vast three-year building program which saw the construction of the new Crosman Hall, a revamping and renovating of the cafeteria, and the erection of the new modern plant. In addition to this, the coal heating system was replaced with new oil-burning units. Now that the Junior School is housed in its new building, both the old school and the Felton House will be razed to make way for athletic fields and other play areas. In connection with the building program, the lower end of County Line Road, opening onto Railroad Avenue, was closed off to eliminate its use as a throughway and thereby reduce the hazards to the pupils using the adjacent play areas, and the road was widened to permit an easier flow of traffic during the busy morning hours. During most of the year, the old Junior School, bursting at its seams, was carrying on with its usual program of education in spite of the build- ing 'activity going on all around, the personnel of the Junior School are to be congratulated on their application to their iobs while work pro- gressed. They all continued to set high standards of performance in the classroom and on the playing fields and managed to stay clear of the work crew at the same time. The efforts of the Junior Schoolers in the field of public service was hiqhly commendable, UNICEF and the American Red Cross were well supported, while the Reed Street Neighborhood House and the Chil- dren's Hospital received Christrnas greetings through packages from Hav- erford. The Christmas Concert and the annual operetta were presented with the usual high spirit and were very well received. The New Junior School from rear The Felton House This year, the Junior School staff had five new faces, those of Miss Erhardt, Mrs. Borghe- sani, Mr. Cubbage, Mr. Ewing, and Mr. O'- Brien, a member of the class of '46, Miss Er- hardt came to Haverford from Lankenau Hos- pital to become the librarian here, while Mrs. Boghesani succeeded Mrs. Tracy in assisting Mrs. Savage with the Pre-School group in the Wilson House. Mr. Cubbage and Mr. O'Brien taught English at the fourth, fifth, and sixth grade level this year, while Mr. Ewing instructs the same groups in mathematics. Although presently the Junior School is lo- cated in its new home, the staff and students will find it is some time before they stop ad- miring their new layout. ..l.., Recess! '71 kg .f 'fi Q. :Q Q On September 2, a squad of thirty boys, captained by Bruce Lindsay, turned out for the first day of practice. The team had only three returning lettermen, Lindsay, Bob Kreitler, and George West, who were joined by many boys who had never played on the varsity before lthe squad averaged sixteen years of agel. Under the able guidance of coaches Harry Smith and Ben Heyward, the team was shaped into a good- looking club. Unfortunately, the team lost its first two games to Moores- town Friends and Westtown, but bounced back and defeated George School, 5 to I, with Lindsay scoring three of Haver- ford's goals. The varsity booters lost their next six games by narrow one-point margins. This was disappointing, and the morale of the team was at its lowest. Haverford then played Episcopal and went down to defeat 5 to I with Episcopal scoring all its goals in the first quarter. However, as the last four games of the season approached, their efforts resulted in a much-improved team. It was able to tie Germantown Academy and Penn Charter, l to l. Finally the team which had tasted practically nothing but defeat all year defeated 14 to ll and tied C0 to Ol Friends Select in its last two contests. The Varsity Soccer team had a very disappointing season, winning two while losing nine and tying three, but expects to be much better in the next few years since most of the boys on the Varsity do not graduate. Also, the J. V. Soccer team had a very good season and they will be a great ad- vantage to next year's team. '39 I MW we A A 'w 13' 32? m 4- x 4- ! g 44 12 9 fa . 'A 4 4. is 5 ' , - ,.,, . Early in the season, the Varsity captained by Dave Fletcher dropped two tight contests to Malvern 49-47 and to Episcopal 39-38. These two defeats ruined the Prizermen's chances for any share ofthe Inter-Ac Title. After winning only one of the first six league tilts, the Haverford quintet pulled a tremen- dous upset by downing Penn Charter 48-47 in the most Thrilling game of the' year. The Fords jumped out to a 25-5 lead midway through the first halt. Then the Big Red's attack sputtered and Penn Charter rallied to take the lead 47-46. With less than a rninute re- maining, Dave Bunting drove through the Little Quakers defense and sank the winning basket to give the Fords a well-earned victory. By winning, the Prizerrnen destroyed Charter's hope of the Inter-Ac. Inspired by the victory over P.C., the Big Red downed Germantown Friends 50-49 on Pete Crouse's last second bucket. Keeping their winning ways, the Prizerrnen trounced Friends Central a week later 48-33. Captain Fletcher was the team's leading scorer. Bunt- ing, Crouse, and Walt Acuft did most of the rebounding, while Alex Howson and Charlie Lyons ably covered the back court. Preparing to defend their National Schoolboy title in the Senior four-oared shell and Quadruple skull events, the rivermen worked diligently since early March, under the tutelage of Coach Fred Leonard, aiming to retain its two National Championships. This year's Nationals were held on May 23 in Wyandotte, Michigan. Using the boats and facilities of the Undine Barge Club, the crew rowed about six miles a day, six times a week on the muddy Schuylkill. The tour-oared shell consisted of Bob Blum, Fred Barclay, Larry Byrne, John Huston, and Pete Guerrini as cox- swain. John Richards, Jack Barclay, Steve Sabol, and John Francis composed the varsity squad. The oarsmen also participated in the Philadelphia City Championship. Of this year's nine varsity members, seven will return, thus forming a powerful experienced nucleus for next year's crew. Shooting for a medal! Ready for another workout!
