Classen, H. Bartle, Carter, Roever, Mr. Byerly. Sitting: Sloan, Krickl. Please, everybody! Make this the largest, most in- teresting, most informative yearbook that has ever been produced! This was the order that we of the Haligoluk Staff of 1958 had to fulfill. When we discovered the enormous task of making a second-grader's interest and enthusi- asm equivalent to a senior's expectation of a yearbook to treasure throughout life, we were appalled by the immensity of our undertaking, Nevertheless, the staff has risen to this challenge with a vigor and an enthusi- asm that has seldom been seen in our school's history. Although publishing a yearbook lacks the flamboy- ance of the Big Red marching down the football field to paydirt, or the dramatic impact of a scene in a play which brings the house down, it requires fully as much effort and ingenuity. What originality and flair this book attained cannot be credited to any circumstance or person, for it emerged as a composite of the gigantic effort of the entire staff, guided-and goaded-by the tireless edi- tor-in-chief Van Sloan. Many a sacrificial hour has passed in changing the position of a picture on a page, in polishing a phrase, in taking and printing pic- tures, and in assembling the verbal and pictorial ideas 4 with as much originality as convention would allow. The evidence of our labors may be found on this and every page of the book, and only you can measure our success. We of the Haligoluk of 1958 feel that we have put our missile into orbit. Throughout the year the great potentialities of our class showed up in various ways. l W Ag., CHRIS SHOCH. Secretary-Treasurer WALTER HOWSON, President OWEN SIMMONS, Vice President Lott, C. Walters, A. Hunt, B. Wilson. First row: F. Jacobs, Burnham, Kendall, Dodge, Harkins, Gawthrop, F, Elliott, E. Biddle, J. Howson, C. Shoch, Roberts. Almost all of us participated in sports in one way or another. Some of us who were able to capture positions on varsity lineups helped spark the teams to victory. The junior sports offered chances for physical competition for those of us who were unable to make varsity posts. Many members of our class took advantage of the opportunities offered by the various clubs around Haverford. Some of us sang in the Glee Club under the competent direction of Mr. Law, a privelege we had not enjoyed in Third Form. We continued our interest in the activities of the Dramatic Club, Polemics Society, and the many other organizations meeting at 21501 We are looking forward to assuming places of leadership in these clubs and in sports during the next two years. This year has been a successful one for the sophomore class-both scholastically and academ- ically-and we are looking forward to even better years to come, .1 . 4-, . fan A ..--,. ,L . - . ,,.,.., .. , ..f - an I -1,0 ,.-f, '. .. ....L... .,,...,Nq9,m., Back row: O'Halloran, Peterson, Beyer, C. We quickly realized that it was necessary to become more mature in our attitude toward schoolwork and to assume greater respon- sibilities. Although we found harder work with less supervision, we also experienced greater freedom in choosing our courses. We were able to loin many clubs and got a lot of enjoyment in par- ticipating in their various activities. The General Science Club, Third Form French Club, and Polem- ics Society in particular were the main activities in which we were interested. Although most of us couldn't make varsity teams, we offered our support at many of their games and meets. Serious preparation for our future years at Haverford and college became important to us. The thought concerning admission to college had a sobering effect on our approach to studies. ln conclusion, the 1957-58 Third Form Class has had a fine year and we are glad to be able to say that we are, at last, a part of the Upper School. We remember how each athletic season raised new mental and physical challenges for us. ln the fall, we all played on the 70, 80, or 90 pound football team or the 9 and lO or ll and 12 year old soccer team. Then, with the coming of winter, we took to the gym for calisthenics. The winter season was capped by the Gym Exhibition, in which outstanding performers took part. ln the spring, we went out for baseball, tennis, or track. ln the midst of the Spring Season, we enjoyed participating in Phillip Bishop day. Throughout all the seasons, we won championships and awards through hard work and effort. As we review the year, we remember the as- sembly programs that we enioyed so much. Al- most every week, we saw a play, looked at a movie, or heard a talk by some member of the school. Teachers and pupils alike enjoyed the annual hobby show. But as we remember the past school year, we become aware of the future and its challenges. We know that the Junior School Building will be Second row: M. Howard, Cowan, C. West, D. Hughes, J. STUDENT COUNCIL PRESIDENT HEPBURN In 1958, the Student Council enjoyed one of its most active and successful years, arriving at a point nearer to its founding principles than ever before. The primary purpose of the Council is to repre- sent the student body, to make their wishes known, and to serve the administration in all possible vvays. This, and much more, the Student Council has done. The Council has been active chiefly in the athletic and academic phases of school life. One of the most noticeable contributions of the Stu- dent Council has been the supervision of study halls. By having members of the senior class oversee study halls, the Council has given the faculty the benefit of usable time. Certainly, the faculty has expressed its deep appreciation to the Council for its work in this particular phase of academic life. The Council has also made its influence felt in the Lunchroom. By repeated appeals for a cleaner cafeteria and the organization of a clean- up committee, the Lunchroom has now become a place of prodigious neatness. In the field of athletics, the Council has used its influence to preserve the precious supply of hot water in the gym. Because of the ingenuity of its members and the resourcefulness of its president, Phil Hepburn, the Student Council has had a truly successful year. Between the singing of the Glee Clubs, three student accompanists added to the evening's entertainment with piano solos. Many expressions of appreciation were heard after this concert. In their next performance at the Bala-Cynwyd Methodist Church on December 24, the Glee Club sang the Mass ofthe Holy Nativity by Richard Pur- vis. This Christmas Eve service was as thrilling to the Glee Club as to their audience. During the second half of the year, the Glee Club prepared an entirely new program to sing GLEE CL UB at their four spring concerts. Haverford played host to Agnes Irwin in a fine concert given in the gym in April. The other ioint concerts, held with the singing groups of Shipley and Baldwin, also were highly successful. The highlights of these performances were undoubtedly Randall Thomp- son's Testament of Freedom and Cesar Franck's Mass in A. The final program of the Glee Club singing was given on May 9 with St. Mary's Hall in Burlington, New Jersey. Dances followed all spring concerts. Needless to say, the singers looked forward to these dances as much as the concerts. Every member of the Glee Club feels genuine gratitude to Mr. Frank P. Law for his brilliant di- rection. Were it not for his sense of duty, his wonderful personality and his remarkable musical ability the Glee Club would never be what it is today. The officers of this year's Glee Club Were: President William Hyland Vice President David Rogers Secretary-Treasurer James Whitesell Librarians ,,., Harvey Bartle John Bevan Samuel Carter Sheldon Severinghaus Accompanisrs Bernard Huebner Harry Overholtzer Albert Sloan RPHECS This year the Orpheos, a select group of sixteen boys chosen from the Glee Club, maintained The high standards which have made the group popular and successful since it was formed. In most of their singing, The Orpheos performed light, popular numbers which kept in spirit with The group's in- formality. Mr. Law, director of The Orpheos, dili- gently trained the boys to blend their voices for subtle tones and precisioned accuracy-effects quite different from the dramatic impact of The massed voices of the Glee Club. Following Their first public appearance at the Maroon and Gold, the first formal school dance, the Orpheos began rehearsing Christmas music. During the two weeks preceding Christmas, they sang their large repertoire of familiar carols at churches and hospitals, bringing Christmas ioy To many. Its members are interested in mineralogy, ITWSTSOV- ology, analytical chemistry, nuclear phySiCS, and the study of rockets. The society usually meets once a week to hear a talk given by a member or an outside speaker, or to discuss some interesting topic such as the scientific and political sigF1ifiC6V1Ce of satellites. Dr. Green of the Haverford College astronomy department, spoke on some of the problems and methods encountered in launching a successful satellite. The recent Russian sputniks have caused a great deal of interest in rockets around the school. An important part of the club was the chess team of Hatch, Wilkinson, Overholtzer, and Smith, which played several matches with other schools. The weekly meetings of the club were devoted largely to practice in playing chess and bridge. These meetings were held in the Art Room under the coaching of the faculty advisor, Mr. Briner. The team started the season slowly, winning one-half of its six games before league play started. Haverford gained steam and won four straight in lnter-Ac play, soundly defeating Episco- pal C50-261, Penn Charter C46-301, Friends Central C116-311, and Germantown Academy C45-1101. However, the team dropped the next game to Malvern, but bounced back with another three game, streak, defeating Episcopal, Penn Charter, and Friends Central for the second time. The next week proved dis t as rous, as the team fell from the league lead, absorbing a 50-44 defeat at the hands of G.A. Captain Aldrich, Don Shaffer, and Dave Fletcher were consistent starters throughout the year, the remaining two positions were chosen from Carl Weil, Tom Ridgley, Chris Harvey, Phil Hepburn, and Walter Acuff. The reserves were Bob Blank, Bob Sherr d ' o , Peter Wright, John Sack, and Alex Howson. Definitely the outstanding game of the year was the Penn Charter game at Haverford. Behind by six points at the half, the Fords stormed back and routed the little Quakers 46-30. WRESTLING The Wrestling Team enjoyed another victorious year under the coaching of Neil Buckley. ln ex- tending their undefeated streak in dual meets to a record of thirty-three straight matches, the grap- plers climaxed a perfect year by defeating a strong Penn Charter team to cap their eighth consecutive Inter-Ac Championship. After two early season ties with Springfield and Bryn Athyn, the Buckleymen subdued such for- midable non-league opponents as Peddie, Perkio- men, and Girard College. Germantown Academy and Episcopal bowed easily to scores of 45-3 and A7-2, as the Fords progressed toward the charn- pionship. At the beginning of the season, there were six varsity positions open. By the first match, the line-up showed Fred Buell C95 lb.t, Jim Scott H033 lb.D, Phil Burnham CHQ lb.D, Kit Wilkes U20 lb.D, John Pusey U27 lb.D, Captain Al Oehrle CT33 lb.t, Cliff Keevan H38 lb.t, Bill Pew U45 lb.i, Ted Wagner U54 lb.J, Fred Nleinke U65 lb.D, Ted Hoag U75 lb.D, and John Deitrick Chwt.D. These boys remained as the starting twelve throughout the season and were occasionally relieved by their JV counterparts who included Bob Bernstein, Peter Dodge, Bill Kimball, Mike Bull, Al Greenough, Chris Roberts, and Charlie Classen. On March 7 and 8, the wrestlers competed in the annual Episcopal invitation Wrestling Tourna- ment held at the Palestra. Jim Scott, a sophomore, won the T03 lb. title, Cliff Keevan at T33 earned his fifth successive individual championship, and John Deitrick for the second year walked off with the heavyweight crown. ,....l COACH BUCKLEY CAPTAIN OEHRLE '1 1 tg. Snow and rain greatly hampered the team's practices at the outset of the season. As a result, the Ford sluggers had very little experience work- ing as a team before they took the field against their first opponents. On April 3, the Varsity Squad dropped its first game to Haverford High 5-2. However, in the next game, the team defeated a strong Hill team, 2-l. Dave Fletcher pitched the entire game.
