THE HEADMASTEHB MESSAGE To the graduates of l947 I would make one special plea: Do not allow the frequency with which you hear about important things to dull your sense of the importance of those very things. Our highly developed channels of communication-the press, the radio, the theater, and the platform-publicize urgent matters until for the average citizen they be- come commonplace and monotonous. Herein lies one of our greatest dangers. As a nation of one hundred thirty millions of people we respond effectively to challenges only during limited periods of excitement, or ,,f fear, or high stimulation. Then interest lags, and along with interest goes action. We do not develop that deep, earnest appraisal which sees the significance of situations in true focus and drives on to accomplishment despite the apathy that prevails everywhere around us. The world whose course you young men will help to determine needs this kind of leadership. It will be a world concerned increasingly with labor relations, public health, international affairs, minority problems, and both the darkness and the light that will accompany the atomic age. Already your eyes, your ears, and your minds have been deluged with opinions, proposals, arguments, and appeals. The temptation will be to throw everything over and to go about your own humble business. You will become bored with all the shouting. The temptation to wash your hands of responsibility for all the graver issues will be tremendous. But this is the very thing you cannot, and must not, do. From the many millions will come the few who never lose sight of the goal, and whose lives are a constant inspiration to others.
