Our highly developed channels of communication-the press, the radio, the theater, and the platform-publicize urgent matters until for the average citizen they be- come commonplace and monotonous. Herein lies one of our greatest dangers. As a nation of one hundred thirty millions of people we respond effectively to challenges only during limited periods of excitement, or ,,f fear, or high stimulation. Then interest lags, and along with interest goes action. We do not develop that deep, earnest appraisal which sees the significance of situations in true focus and drives on to accomplishment despite the apathy that prevails everywhere around us. The world whose course you young men will help to determine needs this kind of leadership. It will be a world concerned increasingly with labor relations, public health, international affairs, minority problems, and both the darkness and the light that will accompany the atomic age. Already your eyes, your ears, and your minds have been deluged with opinions, proposals, arguments, and appeals. The temptation will be to throw everything over and to go about your own humble business. You will become bored with all the shouting. The temptation to wash your hands of responsibility for all the graver issues will be tremendous. But this is the very thing you cannot, and must not, do. From the many millions will come the few who never lose sight of the goal, and whose lives are a constant inspiration to others. It is my hope that out of this class will rise that kind of leadership. LESLIE R. SEVERINGHAUS gi :... . ,,,,, . Throughout the nine years which he has spent here Bill has made a fine reputation for himself and has gained with his pleasing personality an almost uncountable number of friends. As for athletics Bill once again is tops. No one who saw the Lawrenceville football game last winter will forget the wonderful game that he played. Before closing, it would seem almost imperative to mention Bill's car, for it is around this Ford that his life is patterned. Not only does it take him to regular school, but it was also a leading factor in his going to summer school year in and year out. 20 Varsity Football lV H V Basketball IV H V Vl Baseball 2nd team III IV Track V Vl Glee Club Ill IV V Current Events Club lll Pres VI Polemxcs Society IV Three Fours V French Club IV Game Committee V FRED CHARLES FUCHS 1319 E. WHO'S WHO IN THE OAKS OAKS HOUSE COMMITTEE Greenawalt, Hummel, Trethaway One of the first on this list should be 'smilin' Sam Greenawalt. Sam has been at Haver- ford for five years, but this is just his second land, he hopes, his lastl in the boarding depart- ment. Many a night Sam has kept the boys fascinated with his tales of love and adventure. Some day you may very well read a book called Forever Greenawaltn. Roommate Bill Trethaway, although he has been at Haverford for but two years, has made quite a name for himself. Bill, the Chairman of the House Committee, is generally known as the peacemaker. Thomas Hummel fpronounced Hoomelll, the Allentown Canary, is the other man on the big trio of seniors. If you ever want to know the facts of the history of Allentown, biographies of basketball players, etc., just see Tom. Newcomer Roy Pavlik blew in from the Windy City and hasn't stopped blowing yet. Bill Lloyd arrived quietly from Delaware to be his roommate. The two Reeds, Dick the actor, and Mark the photographer, made their presence felt more than once. Last of the seniors, but not the least by any means, are Iack Clowar and Hen Smith the two most likeable Ierseyites ever to come to Haverford. No picture of the Oaks could be complete without mention of a few other names. Fore- most on the list are Bob Drew-Bear who in his whimsical way has kept things humming and Mike Moore, whose bored-sounding announcements in Chapel have distinguished him greatly. Abe Haas and Tony Mason are the stalwarts of next year's senior class. x . X nf M, ,WT :wp I Ms.'b-ff u'f' -44, ffwq- i -W w. How many seniors are there on each page? How is the quality of the photographic work? Do you see any stiff and boring Writeups? After that brief 'plug for the Haligoluk, We return to a staid and dignified description of the bi-weekly for aboutl Index. The staff has really worked hard this year, and editors have had a bad time of it, even though they had a slightly easier deadline schedule to meet than last year. The principal reason for this hard time was an apparent lack of interest in jour- nalism in the fifth form, leading to a dearth of 70 as it I Haas Ru sell P BLIEATIU 5 reporters and leg men In some cases whole issues Were Written by about six individuals from the staff On the brighter side is the rising fourth form which has a number of promising young jour- nalists under its shiny veneer of athletes and scholars. The real improvements in the Index have been numerous and have helped restore some of the respect for that publication which it lost last year. First and foremost, Lew Mudge's photographs have brought aid to illiterates with huge photos-and lots of them. Stokes Carrigan has striven with good results to have new and eye-Catching rnakeups. Sports Writ- ing has been better in quality and quantity, under the watchful eye of Bob Kimbrough. SUEHYI S LATIZI THE LATIN CLUB this year began its activ- ities on October 4, soon after school opened. Since October, most of the meetings of the Latin Club have been devoted to the presenta- tion of lectures, given by members of the Club, on subjects dealing with Roman history, war- fare, and culture. These discourses were color- fully illustrated with the aid of historical prints shown on a screen by the school dilineascope. Valuable service was rendered the Club by the Work and Program Committees. The former mounted scores of pictures to add to the club's huge collection, and also took charge of the physical aspects of the meetings. The latter mapped the schedule for the year's work. The Club's visit to the Fels Planetarium to study the stars and observe their relationship to Greek and Roman mythology was also planned by this committee, and proved to be one of the highlights of the year. THE FRENCH CLUB under the able super- vision of Monsieur L'Heritier this year spent a pleasant forty minutes every week reading from the PETIT IOURNAL, a French newspaper. and discussing topics in French. The boys used some of this time learning to pronounce French poems that they will recite during the French declamation contest. The fourth form section has procured a mag- azine called FRANCE LIVES which contains many interesting pictures. Using the school delineoscope these pictures are transmitted to the movie screen while a boy with the help of Monsieur L'Heritier gives a short talk in French about the picture. The officers of the fifth and sixth form sec- tion are Stokes Carrigan, President, Peter Bartow, Vice-President, and Ben Heilman, Sec- retary-Treasurer. Those of the fourth form are Clark Driemeyer, President, Alan Kimball, Vice-Presidenfg and Buddy Neuman, Secretary- Treasurer. Back Row, left to right: Heilman, Hibberd, D. Roberts, Myers, Bartow. Undoubtedly a highlight of the LAWRENCEVILLE-OCTOBER 5: Sweating under a hot New Iersey sun, the Maroon and Gold gridiron aggregation out- fought and outplayed a bigger and heavier Lawrenceville club to run its victory string to two. Only one Haverford pass clicked during the entire game. However, the one that clicked was a 12-yard touchdown heave from Iirn Boyd to Fritz Thornton in the end zone. The other Haverford score came on a five-yard dash around the end by Ioe Diamond. The scamper climaxed a sustained drive which Haverford had started on its own 35. Lawrenceville scored its lone counter when Smart skirted left end following a fumbled punt by Haverford on its own four yard line. 90 HILL-OCTOBER 12: Playing its first home game of the season on a Saturday afternoon, Haverford rolled over a lighter Hill School eleven for a 20-0 victory. Four full teams saw action for Haverford in this contest, with the subs playing nearly the entire fourth quarter. Thornton booted two placements and at no tice was Haverford's pay dirt threatened by the Pottstown boys, although they played a dogged and inspired game. Before the game. Alert from the start, Haverford scored on the first play from scrimmage when highly-rated Bagnell of Germantown, fumbled the ball into the awaiting arms of Tom Man- gan, who gathered it in and sprinted 31 yards for the initial tally. Boyd to Thornton passes proved an important factor in the victory. The team as a unit played as well as it had all season. Following Mangan's early score, a quarterback sneak by Boyd from one yard out was good for a second touchdown. Then, in the third quarter, Boyd rifled a pass to Dave Monjar for 8 yards and a touchdown, after set- ting the score up with a 26-yard heave to Thornton. Captain-elect Fritz Thornton, Ioe Diamond, Dave Monjar, Bill Fritz and Ierry Hansen. Iohnny Mather, who played regularly all dur- ing this season, was a bright prospect. On December 4th in the season's opener. the quintet was defeated by a very strong and experienced Overbrook club 50-37. The brand of ball was good although the taller and smoother opposition was a little too much. Fritz Thornton was the game's high scorer with twelve points. Haverford journeyed over to Malvern on December Sth, to play one of its best games. defeating the Preppers 48-40. After a slow first half, which ended in 12-12 deadlock, Captain Thornton got hot. Putting on the best dribbling exhibition of the year, he racked in 25 of his 28 points on assorted shots, mostly through the pivot slot. On December 17th the quintet was defeated at Northeast High 48-39. Dave Monjar was on and bagged 16 points for the losing cause, be- sides doing well on the backboards. During the Christmas recess, Haverford entered the Wayne Rotary tournament to be defeated by a much improved Radnor club 41-25. Iohnny Mather kept the fans from walk- ing out with 10 points for the game's scoring honors. Two nights later the Big Red cleaned up on Ridley Township 28-23 in the tournament consolation game. Fritz Thornton returned to the lineup, getting 15 points to pace the victory. On Ianuary 4th the Basketball team jour- neyed to Annapolis to take a terrible 50-23 drubbing at the hands of the plebes, but on the seventh, Girard College was easy pickings as the entire squad rolled up a 59-47 victory. A 31-point Girard landslide against the second team fell far short as Thornton, Monjar, and Mather led the scoring. Although Fritz Thornton had l6 points, the real credit for the win belongs to Iimmy Boyd, who completely squelched dangerous Reds Bag- nell, in the finest defensive performance of the year. Victory was short-lived, however, as the Ma- roon and Gold went down under a 5l-58 bar- rage by Friends Central. Herky Parke held the spotlight for the Fords. Matters went from bad to worse as the next day saw a loss to Law- renceville. Billy Fritz' brilliant play was of no avail in the lopsided '15-29 contest. Haverford turned in a good game at Epis- copal, downing the Churchmen 5l-37. Iirnmy Boyd and Ioe Diamond were standouts in the never-close contest. Captain Thornton provided the coup de grace with his l7 points, thus run- ning away with the scoring honors. On Ianuary 24th the Main Liners were 'vic- tims of Penn Charter 63-33. The Little Quakers dropped an amazing percentage of their shots, going Wild in their home court. The following Friday the Haverford quintet went to German- town to suffer its third lnter-Ac defeat, B3-52, in a fast game. A switch in defensive plans enabled Reds Bagnell to set a new league scoring mark with 39 points. Iohnny Mather led the Fords with 18. On February eighth, the Big Red returned to edge a strong Hill aggregation in a 39-37 thriller. Iohnny Mathers two last second field goals put the game on ice, he again led the scoring with l8 points. The next Friday, Haverford went through an afternoon nightmare in the Friends Central match box, losing, 49-28. On the eighteenth of February the Maroon and Gold five backed into a 42-40 victory over Episcopal. Mather led the generally uninspired quintet with l2 points. 101 Front Row left to right Spurdle Mye s Ingersoll C Esler Thlrd Row Mr McQu1llen Leo Chasteney S Smrth A Lolquxst Russell R Reed Second Row Hattersley Mason Grant Lerper Drew Bear Rettre Front Row Grmstelder Coffln I Scott Ross Rush VARSITY SWIMMI G Quahty as well as quantrty was the keynote to Haverfords l947 sw1mm1ng season as Ioe McQu1llens mermen splashed therr way to eight dual meet vrctorres Won three rndrvrdual rnterscholastrc trtles and four relay trtles and broke three school records erght trmes After trouncrng West Phxladelphra 40 26 the Fords lost a heartbreaker to the Penn Fresh men 31 35 The meet was decrded on the 200 yard freestyle relay last event of the after noon when the collegrans won by a harr Gor don Rufe Hattersley a warmly welcomed ad drtxon to the McQu1llen trrbe smote down Al Blggs school breast stroke record of l mrnute 12 6 seconds wrth a l 10 effort Northeast Hrgh slrpped beneath the Waves on Ianuary 15 as the Fords won all events and downed the Archlves 49 17 The Trxple Entente of Captarn Irm Grant Rufe Hattersley and Tony Mason swam back stroke breast stroke and freestyle respectrvely to a new school l50 yard medley relay record of l 257 Two days later thrs same trro journeyed to the Ger mantown YMCA and won the D1str1ct Inter of Charlre Esler Bob Drew Bear and Tw1ggs Myers took thrrd place rn the same event Travelrng next to Grrard College the nala tors won both relays to overcome a srx pornt defrcrt and w1n 36 30 Tony Mason anchored the freestyle relay Wxth a 24 5 seconds clockmg for hrs 50 yard leg Rufe Hattersley lowered the breast stroke mark to l 085 whrle Irm Grant won the back stroke rn l 06 4 ty1ng Fed Lammots 1946 school record St Iosephs was the next v1ct1m 5214 as the Haverford1ans Won all events scholastic title in l:24.8, While the B team . Student interest ran high and there were large crowds at every home match. The team received moral support when it was away from home, too. The grunt and grown boys started off the season with high hopes, only to lose to Penn Charter 33-15. The next match saw the Fords on top, though, as they took over Yeadon 35-16. St. Andrews was the next toe, and the boys lost a very close match by the score of 30-13. Lower Merion paid the Haverford campus a visit and was handily defeated 22-16. 'Trekking to the Hill, the team absorbed its worst defeat of the season as it came out on the short end of 32-U score. In the next match, really the most important of the year to most of the boys, the team fought Episcopal and the referee hard, but came out the loser again 28-15. Next week the grapplers bounced back with a vengeance and trounced Bryn Athyn 36-8, This meet was the victory highlight of the sea- son. The team absorbed still another beating in the next to last meet, with George School. The final tussle of the season came out to a 21-21 tie with Peddie. Special credit must be given to five people for this year's team: Coaches Ben Kennedy and Mr. Buckley, Co-captains Scotty Kimmich and Charlie Bremiller, and the omnipresent Bill Kennedy, manager. The team had four returning lettermen, headed by Co- captains Iohn Dillon and Sam Greenawalt. The other lettermen were Tom Mangan and Sandy Buck. The racquetmen opened their season by rolling over Germantown Academy by the count of 6-U. The only unpleasant feature of the match was the injury of number five, Bob Stanger. The next week the team lost a hotly con- tested match to E. A., the champions of l945-46. Our winners were Dillon and Mangan. In the match that would have meant a tie had we won, Tim Chisholm lost 17-19 in the last game. In the next match, the team defeated Penn Charter to the tune of 5-l. Tom Mangan was the only casualty. ln the return match with Germantown the Fords took the Red and Black into camp again, 6-U, as, in the absence.. of Sam Greenawalt, everyone moved up one slot. ln the last Inter-ac squash match the team lost its return match with Episcopal, 5-l. The sole winner this time was Fritz Thornton, After an eventful trip to Yale, in which the team was delayed by a train accident, the squashmen lost to the superior freshmen 5-U for their third and final defeat. In the second match of the day they won a close match with Choate School, coming out on the long end of the 3-2 score. ln the final game of the year, W Tir' tu-4 2 'Y -.1 4010!-JA -an although both the co-captains were defeated, the team subdued Peddie School at Haverford 3-2. This years success was very much due to the exceptionally fine bunch of fellows on the team. More so than on most teams, however. it was due to the fine dual coaches, Bill White and Charley Dethier. The latter's humor saved the day many times, from the beginning of the season to the final award of letters. However, a different story was told at Haver- ford High, when miscues and general poor play ruined the game and the High School won 14-8. Absent: Carpenter, Cornman, Mr. Longstreth, Mr. Detweiler A Word should be said in speaking of track this year at Haverford about the Winter track team. This little-noticed but hard-Working squad of boys, working under the tutelage of Frank Longstreth and Bob Detweiler, really had some great experience, although they didn't win anything of note, in entering several indoor meets, notably at Madison Square Garden, Camden, and Penn. School indoor records fell by the score last winter, and the track team was already in good physical shape by the time spring rolled around and the out- door season began. 112 The first meet of the year went to Haverford. as the team journeyed to Frankford, and took the meet 561!a to 422!a. Despite the very cold and blustery day, the team as a whole looked very good in winning. Haverford took eight first places with Scott in the high jump, Corn- man in the shot put, Smith in the pole vault, White in the high and low hurdles, Leo in the lU0 and 440, and Dillon in the broad jump- each contributing five points. For the first time in a dozen years the Omegas came through to win the meet on Phillip Bishow Day. A beautiful May day on the twelfth provided good track conditions as the Omegas won, 137 to 127. Qualification- seekers were numerous and the lists were filled with hopeful athletes. VARSITY TENN 15 With Mr. Barton Sensenig starting another year as coach, the varsity tennis team, work- ing under the new, scientific tennis system, ex- pected to be in the running strongly for the championship again. Indoor practice started the week before Spring Vacation, and Coaches Allen and Sen- senig started working hard on strokes and placing of shots. Many weaknesses and de- fects on play had been pointed out and cor- rected even before the courts were in shape. With the courts ready for play, the team was able to get its ladder tournament going and real practice started in good time for the first match with Friends Central on April 17 This match proved very encouraging as Haverford blanked the Friends 6 U The team seemed to be in shape, and to have had plenty of practice. Mahan beat Kaufman 6-4. 6-3, Biddle defeated Nicholson 6-1, 6-2, Steere, the first form ace, beat Shmidheiser 6-0, 6-0, and Baxter defeated Stotz 6-U, 6-3. The two doubles teams of Bartow and Yarnall and Moore and Hansen, beat their opponents 6-U. 6-1, and 6-2, 6-1 respectively. The U-P Freshmen, with apparently a great deal more experience than Haverford, won hands down, 5-l on April 22. Mahan, Biddle, Steere, and Baxter all lost by relatively large margins, while the doubles combinations of Bartow-Yarnall, and Moore-Hansen fared not much better.
