IOHN S BAKER I S lack ake Entered 1940 DICKINSON Indev 44 Current Events 44 5 V Form Publrc Speakrng 43 Q Honor Roll 43 44 Crosman House Commrttee 44 Dramatrc Club 42 Football Squad 43 155 Football 42 Second Team Soccer 44 Swrmmrng Manager H 43 44 Varsrty Baseball Manager H 44 Four years ago I entered the Haverford School to get an educatron I was and strll am a member of the dormrtory group known as the Oaks Boys My first two years passed uneventfully Maybe the reason for thrs was that I was strll tryrng to get an educatron In my Frfth Form years thrngs began to move I made my debut as an orator wrth a speech on Nazrsm rn Chapel More rmportant than that however rt was my first year as swrmmrng team manager By thrs trme I had learned not to let my schoolrng rnterfere wrth my educatron Durrng thrs year I came rnto contact wrth several outstandrng Crosman House personalrtres Among these were my roommate ohn E Baker Drck Montargne and Archre McGlasson These three together wrth myself made up the Brg Four or the House Commrttee My Srxth Form year capped the clrmax I managed the swrmmrng team agarn and through my announcements rn chapel learned the use of the superlatrve Late rn the swrmmrng season I was notrhed that I had been elected manager of the baseball team My favorrte memorres are managmg the swrmmrng and baseball teams playrng on Mr Sensenrg s second soccer team and Mr Shaw s hrstory class EDITOR S NOTE johnny speaks rn a rather reserved manner about hrs experrences as swrmmrng team manager Hrs managmg and especrally hrs announcements of swrm mrng meets rn mornrng assembly wrll always be green rn the memory of the mermen of thrs year for undoubtedly he was the best possible man for the job Another rnterest rn hrs lrfe rs the Readrng Rarlroad and after several years he has succeeded rn convrncrng hrs fellow boarders that the Readrng rs the only rarlroad rn the countr jdhn was one of the leaders of the Phrlosophers Club last year and havrng an abundant supply of rnterestrng facts he helped to keep the drscussrons from berng too rdealrstrc and theoretrcal . .4 ff 4. IOHN E BAKER II I3 I E Entered: 1942 CORNELL Current Events 44 French Club 43 44 Crosman House Commrttee 44 Swrmmmg 43 Varsrty Track Manager H 44 In 1932 I began my formal educatron at the Elmwood School outsnde of York Pennsylvama I entered the York Colleglate Institute ln 1937 and contmued my studies there untxl the end of 42 Then I came to Haverford to lnve at the Crosman House On September 15 1942 I arrnved here I told Mr Covert that my name was John E Baker It dxdn t long xdentrfy me clearly though because an hour later john S Baker arrrved and ever smce people have been callmg me both names The flrst year I was here I roomed wlth the Reverend S Baker xt was a lot easxer for everybody havmg us both nn the same room That year I became very well Informed on relxgrous questlons thanks to S and also concerning matters about the bunldlng of The Body Beautlful by A G Atlas Van Metre In 43 I returned to find that my new roommate was Jonathan Hxldreth Dlckeson Montalgne more commonly called Moe and later known as the boy wxth the short name and the long legs After the Hre on November 29 we moved to the Regzster House on Grays Lane where we were ln charge of Messrs Fox and Cleaves Retummg from sprmg vacatlon we moved back to the Crosman House From then on I settled down to the job of managing the track team and makmg an all out offensrve for my dlploma EDITOR S NOTE From the day john arrlved It was evldent that the York Pa Chamber of Commerce had opened a branch ofice m Haverford Every tlme a tram went by on the P R R he could be heard to say That tram goes to York J E may be found after school among the drug store phllosophers who congregate at Camps Pharmacy On occasrons he can be seen srttmg rn a rellectwe mood but that lS pretty rare for an actlve man lrke h1m Perhaps hrs greatest dxfliculty has been trymg to keep from bemg confused wnth S Baker Now that he IS leavmg that task wxll no longer present ltself and E wrll have comparatnve rest If Uncle Sam calls hrm to the colors next summer the country wnll be getting a fine soldler However lf thlngs are dxfferent E plans to study chemical engmeermg and we feel sure that he will do well ' i ck, as ' .n v f 1 ' l . . , . .. .. . tg: no RUSSELL CONWELL BALL IR Russ R C Entered 1935 WFST POINT I-IALIGOLUK Business M Index Feature Editor 44 Student Counc1l 44 Signet 44 Current Events 44 Glee Club 43 44 Dance Committee 44 Honor Roll 38 44 Dramatic Club 43 44 Bond Club 43 44 Varsity Football H 43 l35 Football 40 Varsity Squash H 43 C Varsity Track H 44 Mile Relay Tc im 44 Quahhcation Medal 44 Time Test Winner 41 4 anager 44 aptain Z As ex ery Senior has to do sooner or later I too have now reached the time when it is necessary to write my autob1ography for the HALIGOLUK My first recollection of Haxerford was away back rn the spring of 1935 when it was rumored that I didnt appear to have enough brains to be a Haverfordian However after a great deal of persuasion from the family and a bit of tutoring on my part the school accepted me as 1 and at the same time harrowed by Haverford s all powerful yellow sheet which seems to see all and know all My favorite sport has been football but for eight years I played from the bench nevertheless this year Doc got soft hearted and put me in once in a while Although my experiences were not of the type that make the headlines they are thlngs I shall remember Although as yet I dont know what I am going to do when I graduate in une I hope to go to West Point But wherever I find myself IH Im sure that I shall always remember and pront from the expenences and training that I have rece1ved at Hay erford EDITOR S NOTE Russ played a good deal of football this year but the reason for this fact was not Doc s soft heart but Russ 3b1llf16S as a player Russ was the first string center all year 1n splte of being hampered by an injured leg after the Northeast game He has been an exceptional squash player for some years and rounded out his career as such by captammg the team th1s w1nter Russ IS a runner of some note and 1 expected to do well again this year He IS also a member of the Signet Society the Student Council and several other societies and committees Moccc 10' , . , . . 2 1 .
