NX! 1 14 l CORNELIUS BRETT BOOCOCK Headmaster The Headmcrsters Message In 1898 Haverford School colors were red and yellow The colors of the Spamsh flag were also red and yellow and because of our war w1th Spam that year there was a strong feehng that we could not keep our school colors so they were changed to the present maroon and gold Thus Haverford School survlved 1ts flrst war N1neteen years later our country plunged 1nto the confl1ct now called World War I and many of the alumn1 took the1r places Wlth d1st1nct1on and bravery At the end of the war the alumn1 presented the Memorral Freld to the School 1n honor of the twenty ftve Haverford boys who lost the1r l1ves 1n that CO1 lfl1Cf We are now 1n World War II wh1ch makes World War I look lxke ch1ld s play The ent1re resources of our country are be1ng rap1dly moblllzed so that we shall be a f1ght1ng mach1ne The young men and some 1n m1ddle l1fe are be1ng called to the colors agarn and today hundreds of Haverford School boys are 1n the Army the Navy the Mar1ne Corps and the A1r Corps They wr1te rn from Fort Meade Fort Monmouth Fort R1ley Fort Lew1s Letters g1v1ng us the story of the1r exper1ences come from Pearl Harbor from Sydney and from other farflung places Our Job dur1ng these terr1ble and exc1t1ng days IS to prepare the boys to be of max1mum use We hope that the war w1ll be over before our undergraduates taste of 1t and that they w1ll be well tra1ned to help 1n the Job of reconstruct1on But whether they become hghters or bullders the School w1ll do 1ts best to send them 1nto the world ftnely equtpped 7 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 . . . . 1 1 . , 1 1 1 1 1 ' 1 1 1 ' 1 1 . 1
