What a setback! o 5' 'ww if Buss Entered 1939 RAYMOND R BLYDENBURGH III Ray Entered I939 Ioorball H -IO Tr ack H 40 A H O UNIVERSITY OI' PENNSYLVANIA When I first walked through the doors of Haverford I recwll thwt I was both worrxed and happy worrled because I was entermq a new school 1nd havxng attended football practlce some tlme before school opened and In that manner I met many of my classmates I entertamed no fancy xdeas as to marks and If I had they would not haxe materlallzed My English was the most orlglnal ever Invented but after months of toll I had become a wrnter of small but passing abxlxty Belng new and unused to the demerlt system I suppose I collected enouqh demerlts for the entlre school and spent many a Saturday mornmq workmg them off Llfe howex er was not one long problem I have had as much fun as anyone else I hope eventually to take up archltecture and to further my study at Pennsylvanxa 9 o Ly I7 H V E R F O R D S C O L happy because it opened new Helds to explore. ' - f - -f X V '- , f , 7 IUNIOR SCHOOL On Monday September 25th shortly before 9 A M there was an atmos phere of confuslon generally and nolse spec1f1cally IH our un1or School bu1ld1ng About tvxo hundred flfty boys of yunlor school age were tearmg from room to room r1cochet1ng off closed doors other boys parents teachers or anyth1ng else wh1ch presented 1tself to the hurrylng youths At 9 A M a bell rang W1thlH S1Xty seconds a transformatlon had taken place The halls were qu1ckly empt1ed of the1r human mhabltants Qulet and order re1gned vxhere but a few moments before all had seemed complete confus1on The un1or School had begun 1tS nevx year To the upper school had gone a f1ne F1rst Form from our Slxth Grade of the prev1ous year To Gllman School had gone our frlend and fine teacher Slr ones as head of the1r lovx er school To Prmceton we lost another of our teachers S1r Foster who returned to h1s alma mater to contlnue w1th graduate vvork Mr Warrlner a newcomer to Haverford though an experlenced teacherl was about to drop h1s t1tle of M1ster for the Haverford t1tle S1r We welcomed back as a teacher at Haverford Mrs Tyler who replaced Mr Foster ln fourth grade We were xery sorry to lose the SEIVICQS of Mrs Moore 1n the m1ddle of the year She started the year w1th us and gaxe up only w1th great reluctance upon the 1ns1stence of her phys1c1an We mlss her and w1sh her good health and happ1ness ln her retlrement Mrs N1cholas who had taught 1n the un1or School before as MISS Lawton returned to 1ssume Mrs Moore s respons1b1l1t1es Try1ng to tell the readers of the Hahgoluk someth1ng of the unlor School and 1fS act1v1t1es IS a d1fhult task because so much of 1nterest happens con stantly that a complete enumeratlon of all noteworthy events IS lmposslble and a part1al T1St suggests only certa1n phases of our school l1fe Before men t1on1ng act1v1t1es lt m1ght be vxlse to tell what the un1or School IS work ind play fr1endsh1p ex er 1mprov1ng vte s1ng laugh and pray together 3Ct1V1ty plus good sportsmansh1p abounds the tone IS one of respons1ve eagerness the Sp1I'1t1S that of fr1endly cooperat1on In add1t1on to academ1c pursults the fall spor s of soccer and football beg1n on open1ng day The superused play group for younger boys IS also very much ID ev1dence from the start Our play court IS the scene of many a touch football game before school 1n the mornlng or at recess per1ods durlng the day Some rema1n after school to use lt The court IS taken pretty much for grant ed by thls t1me because vte have had 1t for about four years Those who can remember the lovely laxxn vvhlch used to be there also remember that It was a lox ely lavtn only durlng the summer months when It wasnt used as a play fleld After a very few days of heavy duty ln the fall there was no grass Then 1t was muddy for a great part of the wmter Now hovt ever the play court IS used almost ex ery day throughout the year After Thanksgnlng v.e go on a vunter schedule w1th no organlzed outdoor athletlcs The boys have a gym perlod each day and of course use the play court whenever poss1ble Wlth the end of the w1nter term and the annual gym exh1b1t1on we are ready for the sprmg athletlcs baseball tennls and track Some of the notevx orthy events of the year m1ght prove of lnterest The pre school group took a tra1n rlde to 30th St They also vxent to the Mar1ne Transportatlon shovx at Franklln lnstltute On several walks nearby they learned a great deal about places ln thelr communlty The first grade V1SltEd Delchester Farm and followed thls up by mak1ng a flrm 1n class and recordmq stor1es ln a book of EXPCFIEHCCS A tr1p to the zoo xx as Wlso 1ncluded IH the first graders act1v1t1es The second grade went to the Un1vers1ty Museum 1n connect1on w1th the study of lnd1ans then had a fine collect1on of lndxan crafts posters etc 88 , , n Q - . . . Q ', , . ., .III thelr classrooms A tr1p to the Planetarium to see Planets on Parade was 1lso on the proqrun for qr1dc 2 The thlrd grade ln connectlon w1th the study of the earth and Its develop ment attended two lectures at the Academy of Natural Sciences on Fosslls and The Cave Men Among other thmgs nn wh1ch thns grade IS partlcularly xnterested IS the subject of blrds thexr care and feedmg mxgratlons etc The study of Pxlgrxms and thenr first forms of government was chmaxed by a play on the same subject The fourth grade also went to the Planetarium to see Planets on Parade On a tr1p to the Academy of Natural Sclences they spec1al1zed ln the evchlbxts on m1ner'1ls 'md the Hall of Man Some of the frfth graders went to the Franklm lnstltute for a VlSlt there and a show at the Planetarlum called The Reasons for the Seasons A group of fifth and smxth graders made a tr1p to New York to VlS1t thelr adopt ed sh1p the S S Uruguay A canoe tr1p has been planned for later ln the year An exh1b1t of Soc1al Studxes projects early ln the year was a feature of the SlXth grade They attended lectures on Greece and Rome at the Unlversxty Museum and have a tr1p planned some txme durmg the last month of school Among the thlngs whxch we expect each year the hobby show takes a prominent place The annual tennls tournament IS just beglnnlng At Chrxst mas t1me the boys brmg stocknngs fllled w1th toys and useful artlcles for d1s tr1but1on by the Bedford St M1ss1on At the same tlme our boys contrxbute to funds for Chr1stmas partles at the College Settlement 1n Phlladelphla Durmg the fall college football songs are sung w1th great enthuslasm ln assembly every Fr1day morn1ng Mlss Spangler worked out a program of Songs of Other Lands w1th the dlfferent grades Notable among the perfor mance of these songs were the Polnsh and Hungarlan folk songs Fnnlandna was the outstandmg success ln thls project At Chrxstmas tlme a colorful pagent wnth muslc was glven 1n the gym It was called Chrlstmas ln a Manor The costumes added to the actlng and the muslc to glve a fimshed effect to the whole Mrs Donaghy spoke ln assembly to 1n1t1ate the Red Cross drlve for junlor members She spoke about the relnef gxven by the Red Cross and showed how they make Brallle ed1t1ons of books for the bhnd Professor Mlke Dorlzas came out from the Unlverslty of Pennsylvanla to glve us another of h1s colorful talks accompamed by motnon pnctures of hxs latest European tr1p The Orpheus Club quartet sang a flne program for us m assembly one morn1ng Mrs Pennell gave a very mterestmg talk on some of the new books for boys An assembly devoted to book week w1th a stage program helped stnm ulate outslde readmg About 130 worthwhlle books were contributed to the hbrary by the boys We were fortunate 1n havxng some good movxes thls year Among the films shown were the anxmal p1ctures w1th Dr Brown as lecturer bxrd fllms presented and explamed by Mxss Heycock and plctures presented by Moore McCormack Llnes showmg a trlp to South Amerlca The entlre school took act1ve part nn the Chlldren s Crusade for Chlldren not only through contrlbutlons but also through programs presented n assembly at the end of the week The athletlc records of football and soccer teams wlll be found elsewhere 1n this book Phlhp Blshop Day is about to be observed The outstandmg event athletxcally this sprxng was the no hlt no run baseball game pltched by George O Brlen of the elex en year old baseball team W1th these rather sketchy notes of the year we of the unlor School take vour leave vuth all best wlshes for the frlends of Hax erford and the Halxqoluk 89 . . .
