A basic introduction to .world literature is offered to all sophomore English students as well as a review of the principles of grammar. The student concentrates on British, French, German, Russian, and Oriental authors. The humor of Twain and the tragedy of Poe are emphasized in American Literature as studied by ju- niors at Haverford. Eleventh graders are also given the opportunity to improve punctuation skills. Senior English commences with the tale of Beowulf, the heroic Norseman. Through the year the works of Merry England's eminent authors are combined with the fundamentals of style in composition. Students may substitute general English for Aca- demic English courses in their junior and senior years. Composition is stressed in eleventh grade General Eng- lish, while preparation for the business world is the key- note of Senior General English. Literature, grammar, vocabulary development, speech arts, and composition-these five phases of English, taught over a three year period, thoroughly acquaint students with our language and its use. no-wu..q Alma E.
