Racing with the clock COMMERCIAL ARTS HARRY P. DOLAN Univ. of Penna., Univ. of Penna. Central Treasury Anyone who finds himself in the vicinity of the northeast wing on the second floor is immediately aware of the continuous clacking of typewriters. Here the Commercial Department offers a back- ground of experience for the non-academic student. Future stenographers and secretaries can learn the skills that will help make them a success in the world of business. Some of the courses offered are typing, shorthand, business law, office practice, and bookkeeping. All commercial students are required to take two years of short- hand, two years of typing, one year of bookkeeping, and half a year of commercial law and office practice. With our modern day complex machines, a course like office practice which teaches the use of these machines is indispensable. Even the student who does not plan to enter a business profession is benefited by business law, which provides vital information about insurance, income tax, etc. Staffed by Mrs. Bevins, Miss Neff, Mr. Postpichal, Mr. Wiley, Mrs. Helm, Mr. Dolan, and Mrs. Marsh, the Commercial Depart- ment prepares students for any future endeavor in the commercial field. Soccer HISTORY During his three years at Haverford, a student is required to take two years of history. Sophomore history, better known as World History, is taught by Mr. Valenti, Mr. Huber, Mr. Breuninger, Miss Utz, and Miss Farrow. This course concen- trates on a study of European and Asiatic cultures from ancient times to the present. Juniors taking American History consolidate U. S. events from the colonial beginning of our nation to its rise as a world power. It is taught by Mr. Hughes, Mr. Valenti, Mr. Livingston, and Mr. Breuninger. Both history courses are supplemented by frequent films which supply background material for current studies. In their senior year students are not required to take history but many Fords elect either P.O.D. or E.I.R. These initial courses are quite apart from each other, but with the sam« purpose in mind. Mr. Shiplett s Problems of Democracy course deals mainly with the analysis of current events. Europear International Relations, tauqht by Mr. Stinson, aims toward ar understanding of our world since 1870. This course cover three units of study—the Industrial Revolution, the First Work War, and the Second World War. CHUSE Temple, Temple Art Club Haverford’s fine arts program, which includes library-science, art, and music, guides the students in developing their talents and interests. Term papers, book reports, projects —whatever the topic or problem, Miss De Cou, our school librarian, is always there with a helpful suggestion on locating the right book for you. We are also fortunate to have a music program which provides much of the background for all school theatrical productions. Our instrumental and choral groups have given musical programs both for our school and many other schools and organizations in the vicinity. All our budding opera singers have an opportunity to exercise their vocal abilities in the A Cappella Choir. These three aspects of the music department are under the able direction of Mr. Tecco, Mr. Trainer, and Mr. Fink, respectively. Many of the showcases which have been enjoyed by all are done by our art students, advised by their instructors, Mr. Chuse and Mr. Reed. Art is offered both as a major and minor for any interested students. I«
