This year Haverford was one of the few high schools in this part of the country to offer college level courses in all three of the natural sciences biology, chemistry, and physics. Mr. Gwinn, I’m allergic to frogs! What shall I do? Mr. Smith, my cat doesn’t have all his muscles,- what hap- pened?’’ Mr. Billy, I spilled the formaldehyde all over the floor! Mrs. Doan, I can’t find my text book. Do I have to do my homework? These complaints and many others can be heard from our third floor science wing. Yes, the biology students are at it again—continually breeding rats, dissecting cats, and exploring animal anatomy! Both Biology I and Advanced Biology are hard work and time consuming. Yet there are many devoted students, and interest runs high among them. Mr. Schenck, I’ve done this experiment twenty times and it still doesn’t come out. Help! Mr. Heckman, can Mr. Schmuckler borrow some tartaric acid? We re out of it. This is what the science labs sound like ... as to what they smell like . . . well, that’s another thing. Chemistry I offers the student a basic knowledge in inorganic chemistry. Chemistry II builds on this foundation and also includes a half year of organic chemistry. m'm2 km- Is it G = k-----or r = m'-------, oh, what the heck. Mr. r G B-E-N-N-E-T-T! Physics II is the oldest of the th ree advanced courses and was introduced five years ago. With the added stress on science this year, our department continues in its aim to encourage students to develop their abilities, thus helping to meet the growing demand for scientists in this atomic age. MATHEMATICS 3x + 2y =4 And here we have a truncated 2x + 11y = 9 parallelepiped. Recently a 3reat deal of attention has been focused on the world of science. When Russia launched her sputniks ’ America’s educators realized, to a sreater extent than ever before, the importance of accentuated instructions in the sciences. Because mathematics is the basis of science, it, too, must be stressed in the curriculum. Haverford’s mathematics department has always realized the importance of educating young people in mathematics, especially in its higher forms. However, for those who do not wish to pursue these higher courses of study, a course in general mathematics is taught by Mr. Harter, Mr. Postpichal, and Mr. Wiley. Plane geometry, a prerequisite for college entrance, and intermediate algebra are first steps in the ascension to higher mathematics. Courses in these subjects are under the super- vision of Mrs. Hodgson, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Vannicola, Mr Dobransky, and Mr. La Penta. Haverford is one of the few suburban schools which offer a course in trigonometry. Trig and solid geometry are both one semester in length, and are taught by Mr. Howarth. Last year a course in advanced algebra was offered to all students interested in and qualified for college-level mathe- matics. It proved so popular that this year it was offered as a regular mathematics course, under direction of Miss Collins. The mathematics department provides for its students an excellent foundation for continued study in this course, as well as a broadened perspective with which to face the rapidly expanding world of science. Soccer HISTORY During his three years at Haverford, a student is required to take two years of history. Sophomore history, better known as World History, is taught by Mr. Valenti, Mr. Huber, Mr. Breuninger, Miss Utz, and Miss Farrow. This course concen- trates on a study of European and Asiatic cultures from ancient times to the present. Juniors taking American History consolidate U. S. events from the colonial beginning of our nation to its rise as a world power. It is taught by Mr. Hughes, Mr. Valenti, Mr. Livingston, and Mr. Breuninger. Both history courses are supplemented by frequent films which supply background material for current studies. In their senior year students are not required to take history but many Fords elect either P.O.D. or E.I.R. These initial courses are quite apart from each other, but with the sam« purpose in mind. Mr. Shiplett s Problems of Democracy course deals mainly with the analysis of current events. Europear International Relations, tauqht by Mr. Stinson, aims toward ar understanding of our world since 1870. This course cover three units of study—the Industrial Revolution, the First Work War, and the Second World War. All of these history courses are correlated to give the studen a sound foundation and a better understanding of the economic social, and international problems in a rapidly changing world ROBERT A.
