Detention LANGUAGE ENGLISH Literature, grammar, vocabulary development, speech arts, composition, and book reports—these six phases of English constitute the course of study to which students are introduced in their three years of high school English. In his sophomore year the student studies World Literature, which acquaints him with such authors as Kipling, Tolstoy, Dumas, and Maurois, as well as others. Sophomore English teachers include the Misses Abernathy, Helbig, and Galloway. A survey course in American Literature, taught by Miss Jones, Miss Ott, Mr. Crispin, and Mr. Leute, is offered in the junior year. Here students read poems, essays, and short stories by such favorites as Sandburg, Emerson, and Twain. The senior year course is devoted to English Literature and includes the study of the works of Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Milton. These classes are under the direction of the Misses Bold, Brown, and Nickerson. Although they are studied for enjoyment and pleasure, these literature courses interpret the customs, the life, and the attitude of a specific period, and expose the student to the philosophies of the authors. LANGUAGE There are four foreign languages offered at Haverford— French and Spanish, romance languages,- German,- and Latin, the classical language. Latin is the only foreign language in this curriculum which may be studied for four years. Because of the revising of the educational system, more emphasis is being placed on this language. Why should one study a foreign language? Language is a means by which we may learn more about the people of other countries,- a great deal may be told about people through the language they speak. While they remain elective subjects, it is necessary for one to have completed two years of a language for college ad- mittance. The goal of a first year student in any foreign language is to obtain a reading knowledge of the language he is studying. In order to accomplish this, he is instructed in basic working vocabulary and fundamental grammatical structures. Next, the student must acquire the ability to express himself in the language in oral work and in composition. He is then given an insight to the literature, the culture, and the customs of the people. Our language department is staffed by Miss Meacham and Miss Farrow, French,- Miss Gilmore, Latin,- Miss Perkins and Miss Ries, Spanish,- and Mr. Sell, German.

MATHEMATICS 3x + 2y =4 And here we have a truncated 2x + 11y = 9 parallelepiped. Recently a 3reat deal of attention has been focused on the world of science. When Russia launched her sputniks ’ America’s educators realized, to a sreater extent than ever before, the importance of accentuated instructions in the sciences. Because mathematics is the basis of science, it, too, must be stressed in the curriculum. Haverford’s mathematics department has always realized the importance of educating young people in mathematics, especially in its higher forms. However, for those who do not wish to pursue these higher courses of study, a course in general mathematics is taught by Mr. Harter, Mr. Postpichal, and Mr. Wiley. Plane geometry, a prerequisite for college entrance, and intermediate algebra are first steps in the ascension to higher mathematics. Courses in these subjects are under the super- vision of Mrs. Hodgson, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Vannicola, Mr Dobransky, and Mr. La Penta. Haverford is one of the few suburban schools which offer a course in trigonometry. Trig and solid geometry are both one semester in length, and are taught by Mr. Howarth. Last year a course in advanced algebra was offered to all students interested in and qualified for college-level mathe- matics. It proved so popular that this year it was offered as a regular mathematics course, under direction of Miss Collins. The mathematics department provides for its students an excellent foundation for continued study in this course, as well as a broadened perspective with which to face the rapidly expanding world of science.
