Pinioned in splendor may our banners soar, Crimson and Gold triumphant evermore. Soon, all too soon, our school-day joys are gone Then, with the radiance of the breaking dawn Ascends our love in loyalty to thee And mem’ry holds us close eternally. Students arise, shout now with wild acclaim, Join in the song to Alma Mater's name. Let not one foe among her ranks be known, Fealty and love will ever bring us home. FORDINAND . . . OUR MASCOT l GREYSTONES Haverford Township High School Havertown, Pennsylvania FOREWORD The clock has moved forward twenty years,- it is 1978. You are seated in a comfortable chair and are looking through your copy of GREYSTONES 1958, reliving half-forgotten high school memories. Do you still remember Haverford? If you close your eyes and think very hard, you can imagine yourself once more entering the building and looking down the long, locker-lined hallway with classrooms on either side. Slowly, you walk down that hall toward the auditorium. Why, isn’t that the ticket booth ahead of you? It seems so quiet now, but what a busy spot it became before a performance as everyone rushed to buy his ticket. Perhaps you'll open the auditorium door and take a look inside. Yes, there is the broad stage, the flag standing proudly in one corner, and the podium placed in its familiar position. Do you remember all the assemblies—good and bad—that you watched here? Or perhaps you found it a convenient time to catch up on lost sleep. Leaving the auditorium, you pause for a moment, looking at the athletic trophy showcase. Can you still hear the enthusiastic voices of the sports fans ringing from the bleachers? Once more you turn down the hall, remembering with a smile those long distances between classes and the many times you had to hurry up the down stairs or down the “up stairs in order to arrive in class before the bell rang. Yes, that was the Haverford of 1958, your Haverford, which GREYSTONES has tried to preserve for you. CORNOG Perhaps no one exerts as great an influence on a young man as his athletic coach. It is hard for the many he coached to express their heartfelt appreciation for the guidance and inspiration of Allie Cornog. We are grateful to the man who came inexperienced to Haverford in 1926 and turned out champion- ship teams; we are grateful to the man who gave unceasingly of his time and energy to help mold the quality and reputation of our boys today. The Cornog Memorial Trophies, Memorial Field, and the Alumni Varsity Club Awards are material evidences of our gratitude to him. The spirit of our students, teachers, and teams is an eternal monument to his unfailing influence. LAUGHTON B. LOGAN Captain 1927 Football Team for Alumni The credit for the development of the splendid athletic program at Haverford High School rightly belongs to Mr. Cornog. Coming to Haverford in 1926, he coached the football, basketball, and baseball teams. As the school More important than victories were the qualities he instilled in his players. Any athlete playing for him knew how to accept victory with true modesty and how to take defeat in a manly way. He coached to win, but not at the expense of Haverford s reputation. He taught his boys to play hard but clean, and to earn the respect of the opposing player in so doing. The high place which Haverford High School's athletic program holds in suburban circles is due to Mr. Cornog’s many years of coaching and the reputation of his teams. He knew the science of his sports, knew and understood his boys, and placed the interest and name of the school above all else. The greatest tribute Haverford can pay him is to have our coaches and teams continue to uphold the high ideals and principles by which he coached. MR. WILLIAM B. Detention LANGUAGE ENGLISH Literature, grammar, vocabulary development, speech arts, composition, and book reports—these six phases of English constitute the course of study to which students are introduced in their three years of high school English. In his sophomore year the student studies World Literature, which acquaints him with such authors as Kipling, Tolstoy, Dumas, and Maurois, as well as others. Sophomore English teachers include the Misses Abernathy, Helbig, and Galloway. A survey course in American Literature, taught by Miss Jones, Miss Ott, Mr. Crispin, and Mr. Leute, is offered in the junior year. Here students read poems, essays, and short stories by such favorites as Sandburg, Emerson, and Twain. The senior year course is devoted to English Literature and includes the study of the works of Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Milton. These classes are under the direction of the Misses Bold, Brown, and Nickerson. Although they are studied for enjoyment and pleasure, these literature courses interpret the customs, the life, and the attitude of a specific period, and expose the student to the philosophies of the authors. LANGUAGE There are four foreign languages offered at Haverford— French and Spanish, romance languages,- German,- and Latin, the classical language. Latin is the only foreign language in this curriculum which may be studied for four years. Because of the revising of the educational system, more emphasis is being placed on this language. Why should one study a foreign language? Language is a means by which we may learn more about the people of other countries,- a great deal may be told about people through the language they speak. While they remain elective subjects, it is necessary for one to have completed two years of a language for college ad- mittance. The goal of a first year student in any foreign language is to obtain a reading knowledge of the language he is studying. In order to accomplish this, he is instructed in basic working vocabulary and fundamental grammatical structures. Next, the student must acquire the ability to express himself in the language in oral work and in composition. He is then given an insight to the literature, the culture, and the customs of the people. Our language department is staffed by Miss Meacham and Miss Farrow, French,- Miss Gilmore, Latin,- Miss Perkins and Miss Ries, Spanish,- and Mr. Sell, German. MATHEMATICS 3x + 2y =4 And here we have a truncated 2x + 11y = 9 parallelepiped. Recently a 3reat deal of attention has been focused on the world of science. When Russia launched her sputniks ’ America’s educators realized, to a sreater extent than ever before, the importance of accentuated instructions in the sciences. Because mathematics is the basis of science, it, too, must be stressed in the curriculum. Haverford’s mathematics department has always realized the importance of educating young people in mathematics, especially in its higher forms. However, for those who do not wish to pursue these higher courses of study, a course in general mathematics is taught by Mr. Harter, Mr. Postpichal, and Mr. Wiley. Plane geometry, a prerequisite for college entrance, and intermediate algebra are first steps in the ascension to higher mathematics. Courses in these subjects are under the super- vision of Mrs. Hodgson, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Vannicola, Mr Dobransky, and Mr. La Penta. Haverford is one of the few suburban schools which offer a course in trigonometry. Trig and solid geometry are both one semester in length, and are taught by Mr. Howarth. Last year a course in advanced algebra was offered to all students interested in and qualified for college-level mathe- matics. It proved so popular that this year it was offered as a regular mathematics course, under direction of Miss Collins. The mathematics department provides for its students an excellent foundation for continued study in this course, as well as a broadened perspective with which to face the rapidly expanding world of science. Fencing Club 1 I This year Haverford was one of the few high schools in this part of the country to offer college level courses in all three of the natural sciences biology, chemistry, and physics. Mr. Gwinn, I’m allergic to frogs! What shall I do? Mr. Smith, my cat doesn’t have all his muscles,- what hap- pened?’’ Mr. Billy, I spilled the formaldehyde all over the floor! Mrs. Doan, I can’t find my text book. Do I have to do my homework? These complaints and many others can be heard from our third floor science wing. Yes, the biology students are at it again—continually breeding rats, dissecting cats, and exploring animal anatomy! Both Biology I and Advanced Biology are hard work and time consuming. Yet there are many devoted students, and interest runs high among them. Mr. Schenck, I’ve done this experiment twenty times and it still doesn’t come out. Help! Mr. Heckman, can Mr. Schmuckler borrow some tartaric acid? We re out of it. This is what the science labs sound like ... as to what they smell like . . . well, that’s another thing. Chemistry I offers the student a basic knowledge in inorganic chemistry. Chemistry II builds on this foundation and also includes a half year of organic chemistry. m'm2 km- Is it G = k-----or r = m'-------, oh, what the heck. Mr. r G B-E-N-N-E-T-T! Physics II is the oldest of the th ree advanced courses and was introduced five years ago. With the added stress on science this year, our department continues in its aim to encourage students to develop their abilities, thus helping to meet the growing demand for scientists in this atomic age. Sophomore history, better known as World History, is taught by Mr. Valenti, Mr. Huber, Mr. Breuninger, Miss Utz, and Miss Farrow. This course concen- trates on a study of European and Asiatic cultures from ancient times to the present. Juniors taking American History consolidate U. S. events from the colonial beginning of our nation to its rise as a world power. It is taught by Mr. Hughes, Mr. Valenti, Mr. Livingston, and Mr. Breuninger. Both history courses are supplemented by frequent films which supply background material for current studies. In their senior year students are not required to take history but many Fords elect either P.O.D. or E.I.R. These initial courses are quite apart from each other, but with the sam« purpose in mind. Mr. Shiplett s Problems of Democracy course deals mainly with the analysis of current events. Europear International Relations, tauqht by Mr. Stinson, aims toward ar understanding of our world since 1870. This course cover three units of study—the Industrial Revolution, the First Work War, and the Second World War. All of these history courses are correlated to give the studen a sound foundation and a better understanding of the economic social, and international problems in a rapidly changing world ROBERT A. Central Treasury Anyone who finds himself in the vicinity of the northeast wing on the second floor is immediately aware of the continuous clacking of typewriters. Here the Commercial Department offers a back- ground of experience for the non-academic student. Future stenographers and secretaries can learn the skills that will help make them a success in the world of business. Some of the courses offered are typing, shorthand, business law, office practice, and bookkeeping. All commercial students are required to take two years of short- hand, two years of typing, one year of bookkeeping, and half a year of commercial law and office practice. With our modern day complex machines, a course like office practice which teaches the use of these machines is indispensable. Even the student who does not plan to enter a business profession is benefited by business law, which provides vital information about insurance, income tax, etc. Staffed by Mrs. Bevins, Miss Neff, Mr. Postpichal, Mr. Wiley, Mrs. Helm, Mr. Dolan, and Mrs. Marsh, the Commercial Depart- ment prepares students for any future endeavor in the commercial field. We are also fortunate to have a music program which provides much of the background for all school theatrical productions. Our instrumental and choral groups have given musical programs both for our school and many other schools and organizations in the vicinity. All our budding opera singers have an opportunity to exercise their vocal abilities in the A Cappella Choir. These three aspects of the music department are under the able direction of Mr. Tecco, Mr. Trainer, and Mr. Fink, respectively. Many of the showcases which have been enjoyed by all are done by our art students, advised by their instructors, Mr. Chuse and Mr. Reed. The girls learn the arts of homemaking under the direction of Mrs. Smith and Miss Mellinger. Expert treatment is always available in the infirmary for any type of illness whether from over-indulgence at lunch, a headache, or some more serious ailment. The medical department is directed by Mrs. Verger, R.N., who is assisted by the girls in the Nursing Club. For boys interested in construction, a course in mechanical drawing is available. Taught by Mr. Brown, it gives them a background in the science of drafting. The shops, under the supervision of Mr. Samitz and Mr. Heegard, give the boys the opportunity to learn mechanical skills. These departments give the students a knowledge of useful arts, which are needed for a well rounded practical education. MAE K. SMITH Drexel, Drexel Cheerleaders KATHERINE YERGER Bryn Mawr Hospital, Univ. of Penna. Nursing Club Although the athletic fields could not be used, the Physical Education Department has provided a well-rounded program of activities this year. Get the ball over the net! Shrieks of this kind were frequently heard in girls' gym classes, where, in the fall, they played volley ball. Line soccer, which is a combination of football and soccer, provided rough excitement for the girls and rounded out the fall season. Can you touch your toes? If you can't, you had better stay away from the girls’ gym classes, because exercises play an important part in the development of a physically-fit body. The boys used the macadam area, adjacent to the school to play football and soccer. In spite of skinned knees and hands, they survived the season and also provided entertain- ment for classroom lookers-out-of-the-window.' Winter marked the beginning of basketball, a sport which was thoroughly enjoyed in both boys and girls’ classes. The he-men” also wrestled and did gymnastics, making use of the horses, rings, and parallel bars. Tumbling brought the girls many an aching back and stiff leg, but they woefully kept at it until everybody could do a backward somersault! Jumping rope added variety and brought back those good ole childhood days but then who thought of it as an important exercise. When long-awaited spring arrived, it brought to the scene its regular seasonal sports—badminton and softball for the girls, baseball and soccer for the boys. ALLISON G. STUDENT GOVERNMENT A great many changes are apparent in Student Council this year. A new meeting time, a new sponsor, and a different structural set-up have made this year a very pro- ductive one. Because of our early schedule, meetings before school were discontinued the Council now meets during the day under a rotation system. Executive Com- mittee and regular Council meetings are held simultane- ously and are conducted by the President. These changes have combined to produce a better, smoother run or- ganization. Perhaps the most publicized Council project was the acquisition of a 1931 Model A Ford, which made its first appearance at the Lower Merion game. It was bought with funds solicited from students, reconditioned by some of our senior boys, and named Fordinand” in a contest sponsored by Fordian. Fordinand sure did a great job in boosting school spirit. The biggest undertaking was our carnival held on April 26. Each homeroom was responsible for a single booth or activity. In the evening a dance was held. The purpose of the carnival was to earn money for future Council projects and to aid worthy programs of other school organizations. Another first for the Student Council in the past season was the establishment of an Orientation Committee, com- posed of three members who guided new students through Haverford during the first few weeks. The polio and heart fund drives, a clothing drive, and a dance were some of the other activities sponsored by Student Council. Many thanks to all those who have helped to make the Student Council a stronger, more meaningful organization. Aside from this, it is the committee's pleasant task to plan several dances during the year and to decorate the gym appropriately. Two of the seven imaginative dance themes presented this year were the Hobo Bounce and the Christmas Snow Ball. The Social Committee further proved its value to the school this year by suggesting and paying for permanent spotlights for the gym. ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE The Assembl Committee is divided into two groups: the Executive Committee the chairman and the ushers, and the homeroom repre- sentatives. The latter group, after receiving data on available paid assembly programs, presents this information to the homerooms where it is votea upon. The most popular choices are then scheduled for the ensuing year. Ideas for future assemblies may be relayed to the com- mittee by the homeroom representatives. The Executive Committee has charge of conducting the assemblies from the reading of opening exercises and the announcing of the program by the chairman to the final dismissing of the student body by the ushers. ATHLETIC COMMITTEE Go Fords Go, Bleacher Boogie, and When the Fords Go Marching In, are some of the innovations in this year's pep rallies. By introducing peppy songs, new cheers, side-splitting skits, and posters, the Athletic Committee has raised school spirit to a new high. They also handle the booster sheets which publicize the games end raise money for our athletic program. Another job of each repre- sentative is to report the problems and the progress of the committee to his homeroom. Many thanks for a job well done! The whole sports program is supervised by the Athletic Association consisting of representatives of the faculty and the student body, whose function is to give their approval to new sports recommended for addition to our athletic program, to approve the team coaches' selection of letter winning athletes, and to sponsor pep rallies. FINANCE COMMITTEE On the second Wednesday of every month, the Finance Committee representatives collect class dues in their homerooms. These dues pay for the Senior Yearbook, the graduating costume, the contribution to a class gift, and the miscellaneous expenses for Class Night. Thus, in their senior year, Finance Committee representatives are kept especially busy collecting money and taking it to the Central Treasury where it is recorded by the Class Treasurer. Social Committee Assembly Committee NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Speakers lighting the four candles of Scholarship, Leader- ship, Character and Service at the induction ceremony. Election into the National Honor Society is the highest honor which can be bestowed upon a student at Haverford. The pillars upon which the society stand are Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. All those in the upper third of their class who have attended Haverford for one year are eligible for membership. However, only fifteen per cent of the senior class and ten per cent of the junior class are elected by the faculty awards committee and the members of the society. The induction ceremony was held on December 13, 1957 with the usual dignity, excitement, and nervous anticipation. President Steve Martindale outlined the history of the society and then introduced Al Kaemmerlen, Pennie Krotee, Ginny Foster, and Scott Magargee, who spoke on character, service, scholarship, and leadership respectively. Mr. Walker then distributed membership cards to new members and intro- duced Father Sullivan from St. Joseph’s College, who spoke on the four qualifications. During the Christmas holidays present members and alumni attended the annual Honor Society banquet. The alumni had much to say about their college curricula and answered the many eager questions presented to them. The National Honor Society is under the able sponsorship of Miss Collins and Mr. Howarth. In addition to doing service projects, such as giving toys to underprivileged children, the boys have had a basketball tournament, joint meetings with the Girls Service Club, and have sent representatives to the State Con- vention in Harrisburg. The GIRLS’ SERVICE CLUB is an organization which per- forms services by helping others in the school and community. The club’s main project is sponsoring a young Korean orphan, Chai-Ok-Ja. Literarycommittee ... literarycommittee For the last time no matter how strange a person s nickname is, print it anyway! This could very well be Sue Lazar counseling her dedicated group of girls on just what to put in the senior write-ups. What fun was had in reading everyone’s secret ambition and favorite saying. And what confusion reigned when we couldn t read our classmates handwriting. Who wants to buy a yearbook? Get one now and avoid the June rush.” Such was the theme of Fran March’s Business Committee as they waged a never-ending battle against inflation, the increasing cost of living, and the decreasing yearbook budget. These boys and girls were the mathematical geniuses who helped make our GREYSTONES everything it is. That's supposed to be an T, not a ’k’. Now type it over. And Barbara Kopf rides herd on the Typing Committee and their tedious chore of interpreting the literary committee’s hieroglyphics. Without this group, GREYSTONES would never have gone to press. Now, I want a picture of this, and this, and this.” Doc Harter worked with Andrea Larson and her Photography Committee in helping them be in the right place at the right time to plan yearbook pics. Who was it that said one picture is worth 10,000 words? No, I like this sketch.” As Bette Jane Grove labored with her Art Committee in deciding just which artistic originals would bedeck our ’58 GREYSTONES. Oh, no, not more copy!” This cry came from Ellen Hasenritter as she and the Editorial Committee attempted the task of assembling our yearbook. The job was hard and long, but our Editorial Committee showed good sense and originality through it all. And commanding all these forces were editor Phyllis Garrett and co-editor Mary Hertrich, who survived the many heartaches well enough to help make a yearbook the senior class could be proud of! The Fordian . . . Deadlines, late hours, last minute rush to the press—all these are familiar headaches to the staff members of The Fordian.’’ The school paper is published nine times yearly. Reporters are expected to write a good story on an assigned subject. Invariably a reporter has no story to write for one issue and three for the next. Writers who get their copy in on time are an editor’s dream. Late stories are only one of the worries of the second roup, the editors. These students surprise the janitors by eing in the Fordian” room until eight o’clock at night on make-up day and by coming through six-foot snow drifts on winter days when school nas been called off—the Senior Prom issue must be on time! Supervising the first two groups, checking all copy, and worrying more than anyone else, is the Fordian” adviser, Miss Helbig. Pen Ink . . . Another year and Pen and Ink is still at work turning out future Shakespeares, Chaucers, and what have you. Under the very capable management of Miss Galloway, FHaverford’s literary magazine continues encouraging creative writing and art work, as well as giving practice in literary criticism. The requirements for membership on the literary staff are attending meetings regularly, submitting one article for each of the four seasonal issues, and working two hours on each Pen Ink make-up. Did you know that Pen Ink exchanges literary publications not only with other schools in the United States but also with schools of many other nations? that all the profits from Color Corner are donated to the publishing of Pen Ink ? that Pen Ink received first prize in the P.S.P.A. (Pennsylvania School Press Association) contest last year? All in all, we can be justly proud of our fine literary magazine. TAKE YOUR CHOICE . . TWENTY-TWO CLUBS Although they cause many a rueful face among the student body, studies and homework are as integral a part of school life as the exciting spectator sports which turn these same students into cheering crowds. To these aspects Haverford has also added a variety of clubs and other organized ac- tivities to insure a well balanced school life. Topics in individual classes must be general enough to include the interests of all the students. It is through clubs Hi Q Team that opportunities are offered for developing specific interests. In a school the size of Haverford there are many students who possess latent talents and need a means of developing these. Organized clubs are the answer to this need. An important purpose of clubs is to enable students to meet others with whom they ordinarily would not have come in contact. Through common interests and experiences they build new friendships. This holds true in relationships between student and teacher as well as among the students themselves. Clubs are organizations for the student. Through dis- cussions, field trips, speakers, etc., the scope of the individual is broadened. Both a general background of the field and the opportunity for learning more about it are presented. It is up to the individuals who make up a club to plan and carry out club programs. Officers learn the meaning of leadership and the responsibilities that go with it through actual experience. All members learn the meaning of reliability. Not everything is serious, of course. Everyone knows that when a group of kids are together they will always have a lot of fun. A combination of fun and work breeds the spirit of cooperation and friendliness so necessary to all of us. Many of our clubs not only benefit their own members but also the school and community as a whole. These clubs take over many duties of which most students are not aware. The Secretarial Club types and mimeographs a great deal of material for the teachers,- all visual-aid equipment is taken care of by the Projection Club. We all are indebted to the Stage Crew for the wonderful sets for our theatrical produc- tions throughout the year. College Club o Members of these clubs learn as they work. They help others and benefit themselves. The girls of the Nursing Club man the infirmary and ably assist Mrs. Yerger. A vote of thanks for our smooth running library goes to the girls of the Library Club. Many of these clubs offer training in the professions into which the member will enter. The F.H.A. strives to improve personal, family, and community relations through various programs presented during the year by outside speakers. Students who plan to be teachers may join F.T.A. Through discussions, reading, films, and actual classroom observance, they learn more about their future profession. As student aides many F.T.A. members assist the faculty in various ways. The Color Corner satisfies our eternal need for school supplies and almost completely supports Pen Ink. Haverford is fortunate in having an actual radio station. Drama Club The engineers and announcers of the Radio Production Club gain invaluable training through broadcasting. Since moving to our new building, wHHS nas been grounded; but as soon as a faculty sponsor has been procured, the station will be back full blast. Some of the more popular clubs at Haverford are those which cater to the special interests of the students. These clubs stimulate the members to gain additional knowledge in their special field of interest. For instance, the College Club aids many students in choosing the right school in which to further their education. The J.C.L. is for those interested in Latin or the influences of the ancient world upon modern life. Any boy or girl who has the desire and enthusiasm to perfect his game is welcome to join Haverford’s Bowling Club. At the request of the students, a Fencing Club has been formed. Here both the fundamental and advanced steps of fencing are taught. Talk about people with their heads in the clouds Haverford has a whole group of them—the Aviation Club, of course. Besides learning the fundamentals of flying, the members also build and fly their own model airplanes. For the students who would like to learn more about the language and customs of the Spanish speaking countries, there is the Spanish Club. Haverford participates in the Scott Hi-Q contest. This is a radio quiz program which includes all Delaware County high schools. This year our team came in fourth out of twenty-one and just missed making the finals. Students are chosen by class standing, intellectual ability, and general knowledge. Haverford s foreign exchange program is handled by the World Wide Workshop. Members of this club exchange gifts, letters, and ideas with students in many countries. This year W.W.W. sponsored Antje Krohn, a student of Erica Schule in Germany who is spending this year at Haverford. Both Antje and the students of HHS have profited from this experience. One can readily see that no matter what the student’s specific interest, it may be fulfilled through our many and varied clubs. Future Home Makers of America 82 Top Left Radio Production Stage Crew Chess Club Top Right Aviation Club Fencing Club Haverford s creative clubs are designed to provide outlets for self expression. They act as channels for creativity and originality. The goal of all extracurricular activities is to round out the individual and to uncover his innate talents; however, each club or organization accomplishes this purpose in a different way. For example, sports deal mainly with the athletic talents, while service organizations provide opportunities to aid others. Although they act dissimilarly, they achieve the same goal. This goal is attained by the creative clubs through their efforts to discern the artistic abilities of the student and to provide ample chances for practice in the arts. The two main creative organizations are the Drama Club and the Art Club. The newly organized Drama Club offers to all amateur thespians an opportunity to become members of the National Thespian Society, an honorary dramatic organiza- tion. Ten points, acquired by participating in dramatic pro- ductions, are required for anyone who wishes to enter the society. Those students interested in painting, drawing, and other related subjects are welcome to join the Art Club. Members of this group design scenery for the dramatic productions, make posters for games and dances, and enter various local and national art contests. A very important part of every club is its faculty advisor. Much appreciation goes to all of the teachers who give of their time and energy to help Haverford s extracurricular program. The sponsors of our various clubs use their training and knowledge to help each member receive the maximum benefit from his chosen club. ill Sponsoring is a difficult job. Clubs should be run by students. Yet without the ideas and assistance of the teachers, many clubs would just peter out. A sponsor must achieve the proper balance between advising and dictating. This quality is not always easy to find. He or she must have an inexhaustible supply of ideas for club programs and activi- ties as well as the time and energy to carry them out. A vote of thanks to our teachers one and all for their admirable attainments in this most difficult of jobs! All of these fine clubs at Haverford, whether concerned with service, special interest, or creativeness are designed to give both pleasure and constructive help to their members. There is at least one organization that should appeal to every personality type. With many students, extracurricular activi- ties assume such importance that they consume the greater portion of their leisure time. After the final bell, signifying for most the end of the academic day, Haverford’s industrious students can be seen scurrying here and there on their never- ending travels to and from various meetings. Students gain much from these clubs, not only in their club’s particular field, but also in experiences that will be extremely useful later in life. Whether a student is an elected officer, a committee chairman, or an active member, he learns how to organize, cooperate, and be depended upon. The main hope of Haverford s extracurricular program is that each participating student will have fun and will gain, through experience, knowledge that may some day be of great value. Everyone should keep in mind that he benefits only in proportion to what he contributes. The more one gives, the more one receives. This exhausted plea came from Mr. Huber many times as he directed this year's ex- travaganza, Around the World in 80 Minutes. For months student writers worked with Mr. Huber, wracking their brains to come up with a show of shows. When the script was completed, try-outs began, and Haverford students had a chance to display their varied talents. After try-outs came the task of writing the chosen acts into the script. Finally the rehearsals started, and before long open- ing night arrived. It was a great show, and we had fun proving that you can go Around the World in 80 Minutes. 88 Chief Heegard and the Sioux Squaws The Buddhas FROM BACH TO ROMBERG The A Cappella Choir . . . One of the main features of Haverford's Music Department is the A Cappella Choir. Mem- bership is based mainly on the student's vocal ability, his dependability, and his desire to sing. Because of the new schedule this year, the Choir has time to rehearse as a group only during class and after school. Mr. Fink, the director, feels that this type of vocal work without accompaniment is by far the most difficult, for it requires a great deal of concentration on the part of each student. Besides the Christmas program, the Operetta, and the spring concert, the A Cappella Choir gives approximately ten additional performances each year. The Orchestra . . . According to the South-Eastern District President at the State Convention of Music Educators, Haverford has the finest high school orchestra in the state. This year the orchestra played at the All-School Show, the Senior Play, the Ameri- can Education Week program, the Operetta, several local high schools, and Temple University. For the second consecutive year a joint concert between Lower Merion and Haverford was held. The highlight of 1958 was a trip to Mount Lebanon High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Mr. Tecco, director of the orchestra, feels that the eighty-seven talented members comprise one of the finest and most enthusiastic groups he has led in several years. We take our hats off to you, orchestra! The Band . . . With a what no instrument again?” stare, John Trainer begins the fourth hour band practice. Haverford High School's Band carried on an active concert program this year by performing in the Christmas program with the orchestra, in the spring concert with the chorus, at the graduation exercises, and at other schools as part of their exchange program. They also de- serve much praise for their marching ability, their participation at the football games, and their jazz arrangements at the pep rallies. Before the Christmas vacation another talented group, the brass ensemble, gave several performances at some of the rest homes in this area. This year the band has proved to be a great asset to Haverford. 89 FINEST IN FROM SOUSA TO PENNSYLVANIA DUKE ELLINGTON )1 JUNIOR PROM Top: Intermission Bottom: Enter the hopefuls “BALI-HAI” The class of 1958 danced beneath swaying palm trees that set the mood for ’ Bali Hai” which took place on May 11 1957. The color scheme was carried out in rich shades of blue, black, and green. The flat, a scene of a South Sea beach at night, was illuminated by a bright moon, and a beach comber’s hut com- plemented the motif. The exciting evening was set off by the crowning of the queen, a rather shocked young miss by the name of Gayle Breuninger. Her court consisted of Nancy Beal, Barbara Blum- berg, Joyce Hurd, and Sara Westlake. Dee Porter and his orchestra put the finishing touches on a night that will long be remembered by every member of the class of 1958. The theme, Fantastkjue,’ contemporary in concept, was carried out with bold shades of red, pink, black and white con- trasted on striking geometric figures of all shapes and sizes. Two mirrored balls cast weirdly shaped reflections upon the dance floor. Once again the Blue Notes were called upon to provide music. They seem to be almost as traditional at the Senior Ball as the nostalgic Grand March. Perhaps the most memorable event of the evening was the class party at the Presidential Apartments after the Ball. There was plenty to eat and never a dull moment with entertainment provided by Mike Pedicin. This Senior Ball was truly a never- to-be-forgotten affair. Top: Tripping the light Fantastique Bottom: Thy praise we’ll ever sing THE GRAND MARCH FOOTBALL Although the Fords did not have an exceptionally long winning streak this year, we still had a team of which we could be proud. It was hard losing some of our games in the very last few minutes of play, but coaches James Shiplett, Richard Smith, and Paul Dobransky all felt that in spite of these factors, the boys retained their spirit all through the season, and they certainly learned a great deal.” That old killer, the Asian Flu, kept many able players down and out. Injuries to some of our vital backfielders were a crippling factor contributing to the break down of our offensive line. Nevertheless, the team, co-captained by Bob Auchy and Mike Boyer, kept in training, played good clean ball, and tried hard, once more showing the spirit that has made our Fords famous! The eleven-man team, with an outstanding record of nine wins and three defeats, scored thirty-three goals to their opponents six. Co-captains Bud Woolley and Dick Bul- garelli were this year’s high scorers with thirteen and seven goals, respectively. Bud played right inside and Dick played outside right wing. Since nineteen lettermen are graduating this year, there will be only three starters for next year’s squad. Mr. Keyser, coach, felt that the team had a very suc- cessful season and also that they had the best offensive unit since 1952. 97 Hockey With shoe strings trailing behind, the girls’ hockey team makes a mad dash for the ous. This scene was witnessed daily as the girls faithfully started for practice at Lynnewood School, the team this year had a season which included four wins, four losses, and one tie. All the girls agreed that the tie game, 0-0, played with Upper Darby’s undefeated team was the most exciting, best played game of the season. The coach, Mrs. Joan Keyser, and the co-captains, Pennie Krotee and Ann Sansenbach, helped lead the team on in its victories. Inexperience and a depletion in their ranks because of Asian flu cut down the potential of the team. It was at full strength only at the Cheltenham meet. Nonetheless, the new members are to be congratulated for their effort and good attitude. A few of the boys ran in the District Meet at Cobbs Creek, and in a meet sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Marcus Hook. Champs by defeating Coatesville, Delhaas, Chester, Williamsport, York, and finally Altoona in the P.I.A.A. Playoffs in Penn’s Palestra. Individual performances on the team were also outstanding. Top scorer Al Kaemmerlen, finishing the season with 581 points, was named to the All-Delaware County Team and the second All-State Team. Dan George had a total of 416 points and was named to the second All-Delaware County Team. Jack Juenger received honorable mention to this team. The Fords placed second in a foul shooting contest at Swarthmore. Ed Macllmoyle making 48 out of 50 possible foul shots. The victory over Chester was clinched with the help of Bud Woolley's foul shot in the final seconds of the game. This statement sums up the good season the Fordettes enjoyed this year. Team- work was the key word in their success. Rickert, Sansenbach, and Crosley were some of the best for- wards Haverford has ever had, said the girls’ coach, Miss Ries. The team’s highscorer was Ann San- senbach, who totaled as many as fifty points in each of two games. With the exception of one loss to Upper Darby, this spirited team, co-captained by Nancy Taylor and Ann Sansenbach, was undefeated. Even though most of the first string players are graduating this year, Miss Ries hopes that the several strong juniors will continue the fine record set by the team. GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL First Row: Adams, McCucn, Manthorpe, Crosley, Sansenbach (Co-captain), Taylor Co-captain), Rickert, Singer, Frazier, Sydnor, Rich- ardson. Second Row: Lippmann (Manager), Schneider (Manager), Carson, Foster, Jones, Beale, Alexander, Eisenstaedt, McCarty, Brunhouse, Boehringer, Sinclair, Greeger (Manager), Davis (Manager). 104 WRESTLING Record-wise the wrestling team did not have an exceptional season, winning one and losing eight meets. Numerous in- juries sustained by the boys and the team’s lack of experience as a whole contributed to the team’s poor record this year,” says coach, Doc” Harter. Only three lettermen returned this season. Certain squad members, however, distinguished them- selves by placing in various tournaments. Among those were Jim Kangas, captain of the squad, who won first place in the Springfield Holiday Tournament, second place in the District I Tournament, and third place in the Regional Tournament,- Jerry Reph, an undefeated sophomore, who won second place in the Suburban Tournament,- and John Hoffman, who won second place in the Springfield Novice Tournament. Doc is optimistic about next year’s squad which will have six returning lettermen. VARSITY WRESTLING SCORES H. H. S. A row of slender figures glide through the water to the finish with Haverford leading all the way to take first and second places. This was a typical performance of this year’s swimming team, under the direction of Miss Hilbert. Dottie Christman, a four year varsity swimmer and co-captain of the team, ably supported by many outstanding swimmers, many of whom were freshmen and sophomores, produced an excellent record. Co-captain Jane Demmy reported, “It is one of the best years the team has ever had. They defeated Lower Merion for the first time in Miss Hilbert s coaching experience, and had only one loss in the entire season. The team also took third place in the P.I.A.A. meet, topping last year’s record. VARSITY SWIMMING H.H.S. 58 Coatesville Opp. 17 33. Abington. . 42 38 Lower Merion 37 60 . Coach Theodore Keyser has high hopes for the 1958 baseball team which will be defending champions of the Suburban 1 Baseball League. The first League game will be played on April 7 and will be spurred on by the six senior championship players who are back again this year—Mike Boyer on third base,- Buddy Woolley, short stop,- Tom Perkins on second base; Dan George in left field; Danny Bowers, center fielder,- and Bill Freilich, second base and right fielder. Backed by such an impressive line up of players plus several sophomore and junior pitchers, the team offers the promise of many well-earned victories. Boys Tennis . . . Mr. Leute feels that the gods have been very good to him in that four veterans with three years of varsity experience are returning to his squad. They are Burbank, Saylor, Morrison, and Gallo. Other promising candidates are Polishook, Burfeind, Wells and Foster. With these men he hopes that the 1958 team will approach the success of last year s team. Track . . . Mr. Breuninger foresees a better-than-usual team coming his way. Fie feels that the team will win more than 50 per cent of its dual meets and place very high in each of the invitation championship meets. The team will be exceptionally strong in its relays, depending upon the four boys who won the Inquirer Championship Relay—Stuart, Magargee, Hodge, and D. Howe. In the field events, much is expected of boys such as Kugler in shotput, Bonn in javelin, Jones in high-jump, and Hodge in broad-jump. Boys Lacrosse . . . Mr. Bennett says that the entire lacrosse team must be rebuilt as the majority of last year’s first team has graduated. The new team will center around co-captains DeWitt Worrell and Bill Rantanen, and three other seniors, Stehley, Bulgarelli, and Turnbull. The team plays three of their eleven scheduled games with local schools—-Penn Crest, Lower Merion, and Swarth- more. College competition with the freshman teams of Penn, Swarthmore, and Drexel completes their schedule. Lacrosse's ever increasing popularity is indicated by both the number of players turning out and the number of schools adapting lacrosse as a major sport. Girls Tennis . . . This year's girls tennis team, coached by Miss Anne Abernathy, has four returning members. These girls—Nancy Taylor, Mary Hertrick, Sandy Adams, and Judy Brunhouse plus Phyliss Pintzuk, Ellen Goodall and Sue Comfort make up the varsity team. The graduating members left two singles positions and a doubles position open. With the junior-varsity bolstering the varsity, Miss Abernathy believes the team has the po- tential for a fairly good season. Girls Lacrosse . . . Miss Meacham expects a good season as she has nine letter girls back, including such out- standing veterans as Sansenbach, Crosley, Rickert, and Boehringer. This team has greater depth than in recent years due to a large number of promising underclassmen reporting for practice. The girls, under the leadership of co-captains, Sydnor and Powell, hope to go through the season undefeated. The fulfillment of their dream depends upon their ability to defeat their Nemesis, Swarthmore, with whom they open on April 27th. 107 BASEBALL First Row: Gillmore (manager), Auchey, Robertson, Foss, Boyer, Bowers, Woolley, Perkins, Freilich, Martindale, Carlson (manager).
