EealicafeJ fo MRS. IESSIE MILLEN SCHEERER IN BEHALF OF THE STUDENTS By CHARLOTTE HARRIS In dedicating this yearbook to the memory of Mrs. Jessie Millen Scheerer, the class of 1955 pays tribute to one of Haverford's most beloved teachers. To those of us who had the privilege of her friendship and guidance, the characterfbuilding qualities she expressed will forever enrich our lives. Her courage, her sincerity, and, most of all, her interest in others were the hallmark of her daily life. Mrs. Scheerer had made many friends in Germany as a result of our school affiliation and her trip there. These friends to whom she devoted a great deal of her time, will always remember her for her everfpresent willingness to help others. The World Wide Workshop, which she organized and sponsored for many years, will serve as a continuing monument to her in furthering the cause of world peace through international understanding and friendship. IN BEHALF OF THE FACULTY By Miss NICKERSON In the death of Jessie Millen Scheerer, we of the faculty have lost not only a muchfloved friend but a generous and stimulating associate. Her own wealth of cultural background inspired an intellectual quickening in both pupils and teachers whose lives touched hers. She was truly dedicated to her profession and gave so unstintingly of herself, her time and her energies that those of us close to her were repeatedly led to protest the constant drain upon her strength. In less dramatic terms, her replies paralleled the words of Edna St. Vincent Millay: My candle burns at both endsg It will not last the nightg But, ah, my foes, and, oh, my friends It gives a lovely light. Mrs. Scheerer's delight in people, her willingness to share in their sorrows and glory in their victories, combined with her zest for life and her keen sense of humor, won for her a host of friends, and her passing leaves a great void and an irreparable sense of loss to those of us who knew and loved her here at Haverford.
