Therefore, the Class of' 1955 dedicates its yearbook to peace. The theme shows the steps which may he taken toward the development of world peace. The illustration to the right represents the world in its unstahle condition. It can follow one of two 0fblfS,+W2lf or Peace. The responsihility of this generation is to restore peace so the world will not he destroyed by an Atomic Wzir, Each section of the hook is introduced hy suggesf tions of the Class of 1955 for restoring peace and security to the world. The United Nations. the greatest step toward peaceful world policies, represents our administraf tive powers. It symbolizes the joining together ol' nations to promote world understanding. The senior class, now opening the door to the future, may hold the key to a peaceful world. Religion teaches us to love one another. Therefore. the goal of our class is to try to ohtain peace through greater religious tolerance. The drawing on the Activity Page represents the Wcwrld Fair, where people of all races. crecds, and nationalities share their products for the heneht of the world. The greatest harmony hctween nations is found at the Qlympie Games, The drawing which intro' duces the Athletic section represents the torch bearer who lights the torch at the heginnine of the Olympic Games, The entwining circles, representing the live continents, are the symhol of thc Olympics, The untlerclassmcn also have a part in deciding the future of the world, whose key is Atomic Energy. IESSIE MILLEN SCHEERER IN BEHALF OF THE STUDENTS By CHARLOTTE HARRIS In dedicating this yearbook to the memory of Mrs. Jessie Millen Scheerer, the class of 1955 pays tribute to one of Haverford's most beloved teachers. To those of us who had the privilege of her friendship and guidance, the characterfbuilding qualities she expressed will forever enrich our lives. Her courage, her sincerity, and, most of all, her interest in others were the hallmark of her daily life. Mrs. Scheerer had made many friends in Germany as a result of our school affiliation and her trip there. These friends to whom she devoted a great deal of her time, will always remember her for her everfpresent willingness to help others. The World Wide Workshop, which she organized and sponsored for many years, will serve as a continuing monument to her in furthering the cause of world peace through international understanding and friendship. IN BEHALF OF THE FACULTY By Miss NICKERSON In the death of Jessie Millen Scheerer, we of the faculty have lost not only a muchfloved friend but a generous and stimulating associate. Her own wealth of cultural background inspired an intellectual quickening in both pupils and teachers whose lives touched hers. She was truly dedicated to her profession and gave so unstintingly of herself, her time and her energies that those of us close to her were repeatedly led to protest the constant drain upon her strength. In less dramatic terms, her replies paralleled the words of Edna St. Vincent Millay: My candle burns at both endsg It will not last the nightg But, ah, my foes, and, oh, my friends It gives a lovely light. Mrs. Scheerer's delight in people, her willingness to share in their sorrows and glory in their victories, combined with her zest for life and her keen sense of humor, won for her a host of friends, and her passing leaves a great void and an irreparable sense of loss to those of us who knew and loved her here at Haverford.
