The Senior Class of Haverford Township Senior High School presents to the students the 1953 edition of the GREYsToNEs. The aim of this yearbook is to portray the dayftof dayflife of the high school as it appears to the average student in order to serve as a pleasant ref minder of the days spent here at Haverford. In previous years, the CIREYSTONES was planned according to a certain themeg but this year there was a general feeling among the editors that such a theme was unnecessary. Therefore the GREYSTONES has been divided into six sections: the Dedication to Mr. and Mrs. Cscar Granger, the Administration, the Senior Class, the Activities, the Athletics, and the Underclassmen. The GREYSTONES, which is under the supervision of Mr. Robert Livingston, is edited under the Four Intrnductinn direction of the senior cofeditors. The rest of the editorial staff is composed of the chairmen of the editorial, the literary, the typing, the business, the art, and the photography committees. It takes com' plete cooperation and team work on the part of all these committees to produce a wellforganized year' hook. The entire staff of the 1953 GREYSTONES would like to take this opportunity to express its ap' preciation to Mr. Robert Livingston for making this yearbook possible, to Mr. Maurice Chuse for super' vising the artistic arrangements, to Mr. Arthur Walter for correction of our grammatical errors, to Mr. Gerald Harter for making the yearbook so interesting with his photography, and to Mr. Harry Dolan for directing the financial success of the GREYSTONES. IIIJNTENTS introduction Dedication Administration Senior Eiass Activities Athletics Underciossnien in I 1 F' - Q7. ,. ,uf M ,A ,,, Dedication WE, THE CLASS OF 1953, DEDICATE THIS OUR YEARBOOK TO MR, AND MRS. GRANGER IN APPRECIATION OF THEIR DEVOTED SERVCE, PROFITABLE GUIDANCE, PERPETUAL INTEREST, AND SINCERE ENTHUSIASM TO HAVERFORD TOWNSHIP SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL. IT IS WITH DEEP REGRET THAT THE FACULTY AND STUDENTS ACKNOWLf EDGE THE RETIREMENT OF MR. GRANGER WHO THROUGHOUT 'III-IE PAST YEARS HAS STOOD AS A SYMBOL OF PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION, NOT ONLY THE STUDENTS OF THIS CLASS BUT OF ALL THE FORMER CLASSES DURING MR. GRANGER'S ADMINISTRATION HAVE FELT A CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM BECAUSE OF HIS SYMPATHETIC UNDERSTANDING AND FAIR JUDGMENT OF PROBLEMS. WE, THE STUDENT BODY OF HAVERFORD HIGH SCHOOL, FEEL THAT WE ARE NOT ONLY LOSING AN EFFICIENT PRINCIPAL. BUT ALSO A CLOSE FRIEND. Seven 'F ppreciatinn Mr. Granger and I have been associated in a close personal way for the past ten years, and I have come to know him well. Through your Yearbook I want to share my thoughts of him as he closes his career as principal of Haverford High School. He has a deep and abiding faith in boys and girls. He believes in their ininate goodness. When things seem to go wrong, he holds his faith in the rightness and goodness of youth. He knows how to smile. It begins in his eyes and breaks in ripples of merrimentg a big, wide, hearty smile. He has deep silences-the thoughtful, full silence of great strength-friendly, gentle, calm. The Senior High School faculty has been fortunate in having Oscar Granger as its principal. Through his national and state contacts we have always been abreast of educational trends and practices. Through his fore' sight we have shared in such secondary school firsts as core programs, familyflife courses, and our own radio station. Through his personality, character, and hu' maneness we have shared satisfying and enriching ex' periences that come from daily living with girls and boys. Working with Oscar Granger is a rare privilege. His enthusiastic interest in every phase of school life, his unfailing optimism, his ability to guide without dictatf ing, his stimulating and democratic leadership, his friendly understanding of all our problems, his easy ac' With the retirement of our principal, Oscar Granger, the students of Haverford High School will lose a trusted adviser and loyal friend. Mr. Granger has endeared himself to all of us be' cause of his tireless efforts on our behalf, and his un' failing interest in all our affairs. We realize this when we see that largely through the help of Mr. Granger, we were finally able to fulfill the dream of having our own radio station. Then, too, we will always remember how Mr. Granger was always the first in the locker room after a football game to congratulate the team. Mr. Granger is always ready to give a smile and a I am reminded of Mr. Granger when I read Goodf bye, Mr. Chips, that delightful story by James Hilton.. After spending many years as a teacher and headmaster of Brookneld, Hilton says of him: For with the new century, there settled upon Ghips a mellowness that gathered all his developing manner' isms and his oftfrepeated jokes into a single harmony. No longer did he have those slight and occasional disciplinary troubles, or feel diffident about his own work and worth. He found that his pride in Brook' field reflected back, giving him cause for pride in him' self and his position. It was a service that gave him freedom to be supremely and completely himself. R. R. ABERNETHY cessibility, his sharing of all honors with his staff-all have endeared him to us. We feel that he Apersonifies the best and highest characteristics of the ideal secondary school prinripal. Oscar Granger is a fine person. He possesses that unusual combination of inflexible integrity and sympaf thetic warmth seldom found in any one individual. He has tremendous vitality which he uses unsparingly. He inspires by precept and example. The Senior High School faculty sincerely thanks Oscar Granger for having been its principal. We never could have worked for a better man. We wish him health and happiness in whatever he may elect to do in future years. We shall miss him! THB FACULTY cheery nod when we see him in the hall, amd he's never too busy to stop for a moment to answer a question. We of the senior class like to feel that Mr. Granger is ugraduatingi' with us-that is, his memory will always be with us through our lives. We know, too, that Mr. Granger's memory will not only live on with the people who have graduated, but that his kindly influence will long be felt at Haverford. As we say goodbye to Mr. Granger, we want to express our deep' est appreciation for all that he has done for us, and to wish him much future happiness. T HB STUDENT BODY Eight , ,H E. J! A Dey WITH VIP. Granger In Hememhranee On February 12, 1953, Haverford High School and the surrounding community suffered a great loss, the death of Miss Irene Cornog, the Home Economics teacher. Miss Cornog taught at Haverford's present building ever since it has been in existence. The success of the department is largely due to her effort, for she established and bettered it throughout the years. Besides adding important subjects to the curriculum, Miss Cornog also participated in sponsoring many extrafcurricular activitiesg she organized the Girls' HifY, sponsored tennis and bowling teams, the costume club, and the cheering squad. In addition to these services, Miss Cornog was also in charge of the cafeteria for many years. The students of Haverford have lon'g been influenced by Miss Cornog. One always felt free to take his personal problems to herg she always tried to put herself in the students place. Her advice was always considered valuable. Miss Cornogs amiability, sincerity, and understanding are the characteristics which made her friends love and respect her deeply. Miss Cornog's spirit will long be remembered in the homes of the entire community and in the hearts of Haverford high school graduates. Ten I1 , 5 L 5, .. G5 ,A ,..v1 . Although the records don't prove it, Haverford can he proud of its footlvall team considering this years competition was kecner than it has heen for a long time. Our one decision victory was over a favored Cheltenham team 1643. Though Mr. Huher's first year as head coach wasn't as successful as it could have heen, he and his ahle assistants, Mr. Shiplett and Mr. Crispen, along with the co' captains, Dan Naumani and Dodger McC1iiin, deserve a lot of credit for their hard work and determination. The hig surprise of the season was the change from the singlefwing to the T formation. Mr. Huber felt that since we were consistently outweighed hy our opponents and had suffered so many injuries, we should take advantage of the speed of the T formation. rather than' the power of the singlefwing. This meant changing almost the eintire lineup and, of course, all the plays. Our poor showing in the Norristown game might he attributed to lack of experience with this new offense, hut hy next year the hoys should he winning with it. A -41ffrL:z .,g,.,L:ff'wr ' , ..., ,... Suburban Champions Haverford Highs soccer team did it again! For the third time in four years they copped the Suburban Championship, thus gaining the right to meet Northeast Catholic in the Terry Cup playfoffs. Under the excellent coaching of Mr. Hill and Mr. Hughes, and further guided by the fine leadership of cofcaptains John Finley and Bob Schrader, the squad completed its schedule with eleven winls, two losses, and four ties. Earlier this fall the outlook did not seem especially bright. With the absence of the only two lettermen, Si Garber and joe Nielson, it appeared that this season would be devoted to rebuilding the team for next year. But as the season progressed it became quite evident that these bootmen were intent upon racking up the victories. With the will to win and an unlbeatable spirit such as these players possessed, it is not altogether surprising that they ended up with so outstanding a record. Chosen to fill positions on the AllfSuburban team were john Finley, Bob Co-Captains Schrader, and Danny Carlin, the latter being further honored by making the Allf . . . F' l , S h d Scholastic squad. Harry Dowd anid Danny Land received honorable mention. m ey C ra er JUNIOR VARSITY sooCER Has. opp 0 Haverford School ............ 4 Z Episcopal Academy .......... l 3 Westtown ................. .... 1 5 Abington ...... ..,, 1 4 Lower Merion ..,. .... 1 l Abington ...,....,..,...... ,... l O Northeast Catholic ., . 2 l Lower Merion ....... .... Witli only two experienced seniors returning to the squad this year, a great deal of rehuilding and training had to he accomplished hy Mr. Breuninger, who so ahly took over the coaching from Mr. Hallowell. Juergen Saalman, an outstanding sophomore, proved himself an excellent runner and made a tremendous contrihution to the team, winlning the Hrst annual Rohert L. Hallowell trophy. Juergen also placed third in the district meet, and in the state meet he crossed the finish line fifth, an almost unheard of feat for a first year man. This years cross country team offers excellent material for development into one of Haverfords best. Seventyfeight HUEHEY mf, .,,,, me ,. The girl's hockey team, captained by Peggy Keller, was a new and inexperienced team this year winning only two out of its seven games. The season began, how' ever, with a smashing 8fO victory over Collingdale, and ended by defeating Lower Merion by a score of two to one, which had lost only one of its games. Miss Pike, though, was handicapped by a green backfield, anid the forward line had only two experienced players. The most valuable player award was not given this year as the team members felt that there was no exceptional hockey player. Next year's team holds a brighter prospect since it will be based upon six ref turning letterfgirls who will be led by the newlyfelected captain, Millie Mullen, halfback. Under the guidance of Mr. Juenger and Mr. Crispen who deserve a great deal of credit for this fine record, we came through the season with only one setback in the 21 games we played. Anyone who saw our first game with Norristown, where we squeezed out a 57f56 victory, will never forget it unless they saw the last one. In this latter clash Norristown had the edge from the beginning, leading by 13 points at one point, and it looked as if they were going to have their revenge until Haverford turned on an exhibition of scoring putting us ahead 64f60 when the hnal buzzer sounded. Cofcaptains Little john Maglio and Big John Edelman were the team's leading point producers with 449 points and 231 'points respectively. This gives Maglio an amazing average of 21.4 points per game which is reason enough for his receiving the Mandes Trophy awarded the most valuable player. Members of the team practiced on Tuesdays and Thursday at the 63rd and Ludlow Street Recreation Center, and they improved consistently during the season. They were coached by Miss Lillian Hilbert and Mrs. Edith Toms. Of the 32 girls on t-he team, there were only eight seniors. They are Ann Woolley, captaing Ginger Snapp, Marie Hecker, Beverley Klipple, Nancy Whitten, Betty Pyott, Carolyn Archer, and manager Barbara Parsons. The approach of June will bring to all of us a feeling of sorrow because it means that we, the Class of '53, shall no longer walk through the halls of H.H.S., as students, or participate in any more activities. So let us reminisce a while before singing the last strains of our Alma Mater. On September 8, 1952, the graduating class of '53 entered thc doors of Haverford to take its place among the other senior classes, The fall season was filled with many exciting football and soccer games. Lively pep rallies were sprinkled throughout the season to bolster the school spirit. The first Annual Football Dance was enthusiastically accepted and turned out to be quite a hit. The girls' hockey team, although not too victorious throughout the season, wound up their schedule by beating Lower Merion. The soccer tcam also came forth for the Alma Mater by copping thc Suburban I Championship. The dramatic department was very busy preparing for the All School Show, Election Daze, a terrific production! As we moved into the winter term, there were many events to highlight the season. At Christmas there was the musical premier, Amahl and the Night Visitors, and during the holidays the annual Christmas Ball was held. All through the vacation, the boys' basketball team was practicing dilif gently. They were rewarded for their work with many thrilling and victorious games which provided them with title of Suburban I Champs. The girls at Haverford were not standing idle on the court either, for they brought home an undefeated record. Gilbert EQ? Sullivan then returned to the stage in the spirit of the Mikado and the music depart' ment certainly worked hard getting those fans opened at the precise moment! Another memorable event for the class was the senior ball, MardifGras. Everyone admired the weird decorations, especially the devil's mask. The Fordian Thespians put on another smashing production called, Men Are Like Street Cars. All agreed that it was one of the best senior class plays yet! Soon the spring season arrived and with it came Si Garber, Haverford's exchange student to Germany. Track, Lacrosse, and baseball got underway to bring home new victories for H.H.S. In a few more days now, the class of '53 will no longer be present here as students, but what this class did and said will long be remembered as we bequeath the school to the class of 1954.
