Til 4 II 'ow HAVERFORD HIGH SCHOOL . . . 191J 9 :t Nineteen forty-eight is rich in anniversaries for Haverford High School, as it marks the fortieth anniversary since the first class was graduated from our institution as a two year high school; the thirty-fifth since the first class was graduated from the four year high school; and the twenty-fifth since the first processional from our present building, Greystones. The history of Haverford High School begins back in 1906, when a two year high school was organized at Llanerch with Mr. William Leavitt as sole teacher. Two years later the first class held commencement exercises. At this time Mr Joseph Huff came to Haverford Township High School as supervising principal, and, for two years, its only teacher. The following years of his life he dedicated to developing the schools of the Township, until his death in 1927. In 1910 the school was located at Chestnutwold and was extended to a three year high school. Two years later the school w-as again moved, and at Oakmont became a four year high school, from which the first class graduated in 1913. In 1923 the first senior class, composed of only twenty-seven pupils, graduated from the present building. Miss Comog and Miss Stewart are the only faculty members who have observed these twenty-five years of continual growth of Haverford High School. 9 4 it HAVERFORD SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL . . . 1948 DEDICATED To OSCAR GRANGER WHOSE NEVER FAILING ENTHUSIASM FOR OUR HIGH SCHOOL AND WHOSE CEASELESS ENERGIES FOR THE WELFARE OF THE STU- DENTS HAS WON HIM THE RESPECT AND ADMIRATION OF ALL, WE PROUDLY AND GRATEFULLY DEDICATE THIS YEARBOOK. Under the direction of Mr. Hallowell, this organization creates a closer cooperation between the faculty and the student body and produces a finer school spirit based upon student will and effort. In May, four Juniors are elected by all the students to serve in their respective offices for the following year. This organization, presided over by the vice-president and assistant secretary of the student council, tries to do all it can to satisfy the necessary needs and wants of the students. The Executive Committee is composed of the officers of the Student Council and the chairmen of the Student Council Committees such as the Assembly, Finance, Girls' and Boys' Councils, Social, and Traffic committees. This organization, under the direction of Mr Granger, tries to settle any school matters which the Student Council cannot settle. The Haverford Township High School National Honor Society was estab lished in 1926. The emblem of the society is the keystone and flaming torch. The key' stone bears the letters S, L, C, S, which stand for the four principles of this organiza.' tion upon which basis the students are elected: Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. To be elected, the students must be in the upper third of the class. Each member of the faculty votes for a student, each member of the society votes, then the final selection is made by a faculty committee approved by Mr. Granger. There are two types of National Honor Societies: the working society and the honorary society. Our school has the honorary society; therefore, it has no special functions. The worthiness of this organization is proved by the many applications sent to the committee annually. Some of the projects of the group this year have been the sponsorship of the photography platform, improvement of the athletic field, planning of the parking lot, and an albtoys' Hi Y show. Con' ferences with HiY's of other schools promote greater friendships and aid in the exchange of ideas. The purpose of the girls' Hi Y is to create, maintain and extend high standards of Christian character not only here at Haverford but in our community and nation as well. Under the direction of Miss Laurie, this honorary service club packed Red Cross gift boxes; sold poppies, Christmas seals, and candy at fcx tball games; and carried out any other services which they w’ere called upon to do. The Purpose of the Pen and lnl{ is to provide a field for the creative literary work of Haverford students. As a member of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association the magazine has held a first place for three successive years; in the state contest it has won successively a second and third place. Last year Pen and Inl{ received the All-Co- lumbia Award for poetry. An interesting outcome of the work has been an exchange of publications with schools all over the United States and abroad. After its publication at the beginning of the fall term, and all through the remainder of the year, the Handbook is a valuable source of information to every Haverford student. It contains the activities, requirements, awards, and other im portant facts about the school, and its compactness makes it an easi.y accessible necessity. Under the guidance of Mr A R Walter and Mr. A. I. Postpichal. the staff of the Handbook produces annually one of the school's most essential publications. You faii t Take II With You” Forty-eight s Thespians chose Hart and Kaufman's hilarious comedy, “You Can t Take It With You, as their class play. The hours of preparation, of work, and of fun alike proved fruitful, for they succeeded in having a sellout both Friday and Saturday nights, and almost reached that goal in the Junior high matinee. Under the guidance of Miss Amo and Mr. Hughes, the well-trained cast provided us with many uproarious moments which, in memory, we always will take with us. The choir this year is really a great one, composed of 125 voices singing anything from Bach to rousing, Russian folk songs. It is deeply indebted to Mr. Fink for doing a grand job. Some of the highlight of the choral year were the singing of the choir over KYW: the Christmas assembly; the program at the Academy of Music; and, of course, the operetta. The activities of the Brass Ensemble were the greatest during the Christmas season when they accompanied the carol singing at the Aluminum Company of America and the Gulf Oil Corporation. Radio programs were on their list too, as they played over WDAS and also for the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church radio program. Their talent was later used at various churches. The annual Thanksgiving game ended with a loss for Haverford, but the boys played a good game and put all they had into it. The coaches expect a strong team next year with several lettermen returning. This year's J.V., under the skillful coaching of Mr. Allison Cornog and Mr. Ray Mentzer, had a successful season. The coaches have high hopes for the development of a better varsity team next year. Competition becomes keener each year, and the interest in the sport increases. The prospects for the current year are somewhat uncertain.
