The National Honor Society of the Haverford Township High School again elected new members into its organization on the basis of Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. Selection of the new members is made partly by the faculty and partly by the former members of the society, with the final choice made by a committee appointed by Mr. Granger. The high standards maintained by this honorary society throw out a real challenge to those students striving to attain membership. The boys' hey under the capable supervision of Robert S. Bennett was very active this year. They played an important part in the Clothing Drive, and are planning a camera stand out on the athletic field, which will be used for taking pictures of the football games. The President was Mike Kirshncr and the Secretary was Herbert Hoover. They also planned a party for the Girls' HiY. The purpose of the Girls' HiY is to maintain high standards of service, be havior, and citizenship. Their activities consist of serving in school and community affairs. There are the usual four officers and five committee heads: program, social, party, decoration, and community welfare. Previously, the inductions have been held at the beginning of each term. The meetings are held every other week. This year, the Hi Y's sponsor was Miss Laurie; formerly, Miss Cornog had this honor. This or ganization is one of the most active and valuable in school affairs. SOCIETIES BOYS’ HI-Y Silting: Groetzinger, Land, Pyott, Leyburn, Schlcnzig, Hoover, Higgins, Wilson. Seventynine SENIOIt MUMMY AM) T II K MUMPS The main theme, if there is one, of the Mummy and The Mumps could ade- quately be expressed in the adage “The best laid schemes of mice and men, Gang Aft A Giei.” The January Class of 1947 did not need this adage brought out, for like most high school play casts they learned this truth to be self evident as they went along. Fortunately the night the curtain went up, that proverbial saying suddenly vanished, and our class with the wonderful help of Miss Mary B. Amo was able to boast of a “success. P LA VS I A I I V I. O i, LEGS The Class of June, 1947 proudly presented on April 18th and 19th the play Daddy-Long-Legs, written by Jane Webster. Miss Jessie Mae Millen very capably coached this production, and the story centered around an orphan girl who went to college and fell in love with her guardian, Daddy-Long-Legs. The characters were excellently portrayed by the members of the Drama Class, and we're glad to say that the play was a huge success. SCHOOL Talents of the students in prose and poetry alike are displayed in this widely read, well-liked bixik, PEN and D K. Miss Lillian R. Brown and her staff do a won- derful job compiling it full of thrilling stories and rhythmic poetry, illustrated artistic- ally, which is worthy of much commendation. Not only is this interesting book distrib- uted to students of Haverford but to others all over the U.S. and nations abroad. One of the most valuable articles given to the students at the beginning of each year is the Haverford High Hayidbool{ containing information which all wish to know. It is a great asset to the students entering from the Junior High School and from other schools, for its contents explain in detail the requirements, the activities, the awards, and many other such important facts about our school. The calendar of events for the year is appreciated by former as well as new pupils. Mr. A. J. Postpichal guides the organization and business affairs of this essential booklet. Department has been more active this year than ever before. The orchestra has been kept busy playing for the Mikado, both senior plays, the Baccalaureate Service, Commence' ment, a concert at the Overbnx)k School for the Blind, and of course, Music Night. Everyone has seen and heard the band on the foot' ball field, in assembly, on Memo' rial Day, and in the Commence' ment given in June. The A Cap- pella Choir has been very out' standing in its achievements this year. Aside from the production of the Mi ado, it has given us very fine performances in the Bac' calaureate Service, in the assem' blies, in the various churches, and in the Cultural Olympics. Although the team lost a number of players through graduation and early season injuries, Captain Eddie Williams sparked them on to victory and stood by them in defeat. A game typical of our season was the annual Thanksgiving Day game with Upper Darby, which ended in a tie. Coach Stinson and his assistants, Mr. Juenger and Mr. Harter, expect to have a strong team with, as a basis, six returning lettermen and several promising players from the J.V.'s squad. It seems that this year was just not our chance to be successful because the Junior Varsity football team also had a slight slump in its power to win games. Mr. Allison Cornog and Mr. Ray Mentzer coached the team and their hopes are high for the development of a better varsity team next year from the players they trained on the J.V.'s this year. Although they do not receive awards for playing on this team, everyone appreciates the job they did throughout the year. 'Flinety'six ami SOCCER Although the hockey team did not have as successful a season as it had hoped for, the scores do not reveal the true teamwork and spirit of the players. Captained by Eleanor Norman, the girls worked together and played their best at every game. This year the team was under the direction of a new coach, Miss Jane S. Pike, who did a very creditable job. The hockey team is looking forward to a brighter and better season next year. The Soccer Team had a successful season this year under the leadership of Bob Fulmer, its captain. Even though the team did not win the Suburban Championship for itself, it did tie for it with Lower Merion. Since there are no playoffs in the league, the two teams will share honors. The team went through the season under the capable coaching of Mr. Hill, and they are all looking forward to winning the championship, next year, for Haverford, alone. J'linety'eight BASKETHALL GIRLS’ The tremendous task of coaching was placed in new hands this season. Miss Knoff, from Brookline School showed the girls some valuable plays and tricks which they used with all their might, but weren’t too successful. Many of the most promising players are underclassmen and girls’ basketball will probably become a winning sport next year. Credit is due to these girls who worked hard. BOYS’ Even though the boys' basketball team had a rather slow season this year, the morale of the team was great. Mr. Steve Juenger coached the fellows regularly, and they played to the best of their ability. Even though the team loses some swell players, including Kirshner, Davis, Haigh, and Muir, the prospects for next year are very promising. Good Luck! GIRLS' BASKETBALL H. These boys worked faithfully each afternoon, and as a result they won all but two matches. Joe Ginther became Interscholastic Champion and t x k third place in the Philadelphia competition. Larry Wolle was the Philadelphia Novice Foils Champion. The fellows deserve a lot of credit for their hard work. The Veterans under the direction ot Mr. Schenck formed a basketball team which came through with a very successful season. They' won three games and lost three, and on a whole this peppy team progressed slowly but surely. The squad con' sistcd of Sam Venuto, who was high scorer, Tom Foley, who acted as captain, Jim Whealton, the capable manager, Bill Means, Paul Winings, A1 Harris, A1 Impicatore, A1 Watson, A1 Lesbirel, Doug Howard, and Joe Lyons. One Hundred and One moss COUNTRY ami WRESTLIXC The Cross Country Team had a very successful season this year although it didn't win any championships. Mr. Brucninger coached this team which lost only a few meets. An unfortunate incident by which some of Haverford's best runners were disqualified stopped H.H.S. from taking first place in the meet at state college. The men of the mats really did a very good job using their half Nelsons. They produced for Haverford one of its most successful seasons. Under the capable coaching of “Doc Harter, the fellows learned the tricks of the sport and used them well by defeating suburban leagues right and left. Only Abington and Upper Darby placed ahead of Haverford in the District One Championships. Two of the fellows, Daniels and Anderson, achieved for themselves the titles of District Champs in the 145 lb. and heavyweight class. Stamen and Anderson displayed their talents again at the state meet but there they weren't quite so fortunate. Truly this is one team of which Haverford can really be proud. Added to these boys are other returning upper classmen and a number of talented tenth graders. With such a heavy schedule, we will have quite a time of it, but this team can be one of the best in recent years. With, as a nucleus, six returning lettermen, Mr. Cornog started getting to- gether another championship team. By the first game he had rounded out a better than par team. While having a poor start, the team quickly regained its winning ways. With a victory over Episcopal (5-3) and another over Norristown (7'0), which is a league victory, Mr. Cornog has hopes of a very successful season. SWIMMIX. and (.01,1 This year, for the first time since 1941, Haverford girls competed in swimming against outside competition. There were meets with Lower Merion, Norristown, and most of the girls on the team were entered in the Interscholastic Swimming Meet. The squad is not a regular varsity team, but an outgrowth of the intra-mural program which has been conducted for the past five years. Special mention should be made of Jeanne Brangan who was elected captain of the group, and Dot Salneu, both of whom competed in the intra-murals and the Interscholastic for three years. The golf team, after a very successful season in which they won the champion- ship, started its second season after the revival of golf in the suburban schools. Most of last year's team graduated but a few sophomores and juniors are shooting very good golf, which is pleasing to Mr. Walters. He has made the statement that he expects Abington to be the team to beat, but we know that our team will do its best to keep the championship at Haverford. About a dozen boys showed interest enough to practice through last September and October, over at Ardmore Park. This Spring we began our first intcrscholastic competition with at least 9 matches scheduled with other suburban schools. GIRLS’ Under the capable coaching of Miss Hutton, the new girls' tennis team has made progress this season. In spite of the rebirth of the sport and inexperience of the girls, eight matches were played. A full schedule was recognized. Interest has been keen throughout the season and the girls hold great expectations for future matches.
