DEDICATION We, the classes of 1946, humbly dedicate our yearbook to the memory of Captain Brewster G. Gallup, an alumnus of Haver' ford High School, who, with too many others, gave his life in the war which has recently ended. He was one of the three heroes who braved enemy fire to hoist Old Glory to the top of the pole on Corregidor. The flagpole was struck by a shell fragment which severed the halyard and caused the flag to drop. How- ever, before it could reach the ground. Cap- tain Gallup and two other soldiers caught it in their arms. But not content with merely saving the banner from touching ground, they immediately set about repairing the damaged halyard, despite heavy enemy fire at that point, and soon had the flag flying again. Captain Gallup was in charge of all the railroads on Bataan Peninsula and served actively until exacuation was forced by the wounds and disease among the troops. After the surrender he was taken prisoner and put into a prison camp. While he was being trans- ported from one camp to another, the Japa- nese ship carrying the prisoners was sunk by American planes. It was acts similar to the deeds of Captain Gallup on Corregidor, showing the spirited gallantry of the Americans, which resulted in our final victory. Tuo
