DEDICATION We, the classes of 1946, humbly dedicate our yearbook to the memory of Captain Brewster G. Gallup, an alumnus of Haver' ford High School, who, with too many others, gave his life in the war which has recently ended. He was one of the three heroes who braved enemy fire to hoist Old Glory to the top of the pole on Corregidor. The flagpole was struck by a shell fragment which severed the halyard and caused the flag to drop. How- ever, before it could reach the ground. Cap- tain Gallup and two other soldiers caught it in their arms. But not content with merely saving the banner from touching ground, they immediately set about repairing the damaged halyard, despite heavy enemy fire at that point, and soon had the flag flying again. Captain Gallup was in charge of all the railroads on Bataan Peninsula and served actively until exacuation was forced by the wounds and disease among the troops. After the surrender he was taken prisoner and put into a prison camp. While he was being trans- ported from one camp to another, the Japa- nese ship carrying the prisoners was sunk by American planes. It was acts similar to the deeds of Captain Gallup on Corregidor, showing the spirited gallantry of the Americans, which resulted in our final victory. Tuo APPRECIATION We, the classes of 1946, wish to extend our deep appreciation for the work of Miss Ruth E. Bishoff, who will always he fond' ly remembered by her Latin stU' dents; Mrs. Marion du Pont Magee, one of the group who originated the successful sopho' more English'History course; Mrs. Marion Starkey Hamlet for the many excellent plays she di- rected; Miss Charlotte Spicer, who directed the A Cappella Choir; Mr. John D. Taylor, who returned to us after serving as a Major in the A.A.F. and recently left to accept a position in the Department of Education at Franklin and Marshall College; Mr. Robert N. Hartman, who returned to the Science Department alter serving in the war as a Lieutenant Commander, and is now leav- ing to accept a position in the Education Division of the Veteran's Bureau; Mr. Wil- liam Wiley, who has returned after several years in the Medical Corps of the Army to organize a Haverford High dance band; Mr. Arthur R. Bawn, who served as a Captain in the Army and has returned to the Commer- cial Department; and of Mrs. Dorothy Knapp, Mr. Granger's secretary, whose charming personality and pleasant smile will be missed by students and teachers alike. We sincerely wish all these people, those whom we welcome back and those to whom we say farewell, the best of luck in their new occu- pations. G.'s who so gallantly defended our great nation against our enemies in all parts of the world, and trust that they are as happy to be with us again. All of these fine men are assembled in room 102 under the able guidance of Mr. Robert A. Living- ston who, we are sure, is doing his utmost in making their stay with us more enjoyable. At this time, ten of them are planning to go on to college; four of these are interested in engineer- ing. Two so far seek business as their life work; while one, upon his graduation, wishes to become a mortician. Two more have already left us for radio school and Lehigh College. All others seem to be undecided or secretive about their future plans, but we would like to ex- tend to everyone of them three cheers and our wishes for the best of luck. But these four students shall long be remembered for their friendly greetings and active participation during their short life- times with us at Haverford High School. This June on our graduation day, as we take our appointed places as individuals in the world, their memory shall persist in all our hearts: and although we sincerely wish they, too, could be with us on that memorable day, the thought that we shall all meet again soon, will be held by each of us. And so to them we can only say in part the words of Fitz-Greene Halleck to Joseph Rodman Drake: Rhys Beagal Walter King Green be the turf above thee; Friend of my better days! ) one new thee but to love thee, Tvjor named thee but to praise. Tears fell, when thou wert dying, From eyes unused to weep, And long, where thou art lying, Will tears the cold earth steep. When hearts whose truth was proven, Li e thine, are laid in earth, There should a wreath be woven To tell the world their worth. Si.rly.fonr ACTIVITIES uovi: This organization, under the direction of Mr. Robert Hallowell, consists of those students chosen by their fellow class members. The officers are elected by all students after introductory speeches have been given. Since next year (1947) will be the last containing a February graduating class, a new program for elections has been suggested and adopted. In May of that year, four Juniors will he elected to their respective offices to serve for the following year. During the football season, it has been arranged by the student council that from the 30 to the 30 yard lines shall be open on one side for those students holding A. A. tickets. The 50 to the 30 yard lines on the other side shall be for the use of those out- siders possessing A. A. tickets. This procedure enables the students to be seated more favorably as a cheering section for our team. After the kick'off, the seats are open to anyone desiring them. The students are elected on the basis of Scholar- ship, Leadership, Character, and Service. To he elected the students must be in the upper third of the class. 15% of the A's are elected, 10% of the B’s, and 5% of the C s. Each member of the faculty votes for a student, each member of the society votes, then the final selection is made by a faculty committee approved by Mr. Granger. This committee changes every year. It was his first big project since taking over the choir again this fall, although the choir has appeared many times this year. The musical, with its humorous dialogue and catchy tunes, was a most popular production. It played to three sell-out crowds and all were impressed with the talent displayed by the performers. HOIKEY Under the capable leadership of Tom Geary, captain of the soccer team, Haver' ford High Schools soccer team had a very favorable season, beating Lower Morion in the last game to end up in second place in the league. Gilbert Smith had the honor to be chosen on the AlbScholastic team. Also, Gil Smith and Jack Wilson made the AlbSuburban first team, and Jim Wren and Bob Fulmer made the second team. The Hockey team wanted to have a special season to give Miss Ethel David, the coach, who is abdicating in favor of Miss Jane S. Pike, a season to remember. The spirit, teamwork, and smooth playing of the squad does not show in the final scores this year, however, but these factors may, in forthcoming seasons, be decisive in producing a team of champions. Although the Basketball team had a none too favorable season as far as scores go, it showed team spirit and perseverance. There were two veterans from the Championship starting five. Bud Williams, the Captain, and Bob McCausland, who graduated in February. Another boy, Ned Brownley, also played on that team but was injured in a football game last fall and was unable to participate this season. The team was invited to play in the Kiwanis Tournament but they were eliminated in the first game, against Upper Darby. However, the boys who played received medals to commemorate the occasion. Bob McCausland was chosen by his team mates as the “Most Valuable Player” of the year. His tremendous scoring ability, work under the backboards, and splendid team play made him the logical choice. After the season at Havcrford was over, some of the boys on the team entered the Norristown Y. M. C. A. Tournament. They did exceptionally well, losing the championship game by one point in an extra period, to finish in second place. For their good work they received silver medals and a trophy. Mr. Stephen M. Juenger, the coach, has that to console him as well as the prospect of a much better season next year when most of the J. V. s, who arc coached by Mr. Albert G. Gwinn, and had a good season, will be playing varsity. The Girls Basketball team has been coached by Miss Lillian B. Hilbert for many years. This season, the girls worked very nicely, and since several of the girls were only sophomores, the future of girls’ basketball at Haverford looks quite promising. The Junior varsity is developing rapidly into a group of first-rate players, also, and will provide adequate background for the future Varsity.
