ATHLETICS F O O T B A L L Deadlocks with Radnor and Norristown and disastrous setbacks at the hands of Cheltenham and Lower Merion began a season which looked anything but promising. Then came the turning point, Abington, Berwyn, Lans- downe, and lltfest Chester bowed to a Haverford eleven which had at last found itself. The success or failure of the season, however, hinged on the outcome of the Upper Darby fracas. Here an inspired group of boys, working as a unit, changed what seemed certain defeat into victory by twice crossing the Royal goal-line in the final period. This victory evened up not only the entire series but also our claim on the new Mancil Memorial Trophy. The boys won their share of games, but more than that, they lived up to Haverford's tradi- tion of clean, hard football. 5+e ,ss 5... B A S E B A L L Last year's baseball team accomplished iar more than was expected from an untried squad. lt de- feated Norristown in a closely-played contest, and the outlook for the remainder ot the season seemed bright. Things broke well until the Abington game, when a poor exhibition oi baseball pushed the teams standing iar below par. Then came a climb that took the team to first place only to be nosed out by Lower Merion. More ground was gained in a Closely-played return game with Norristown, which placed the team at the top, but Upper Darby succeeded in winning both the home and away games, and iorced the team out. With Captain Mink Manno in the pole vault and Tex Ramsdell in the sprints paving the way with consistent first places, the team managed to stay with the best in the suburbs, which was shown by the second place in the Penn Relays. These same boys went to Penn State for the state finals in which they covered themselves with honor. rd rd rd rd Haverf Haverf: Haverfo Haverf Haverford Haverford Haverford Haverford Haverford Haverford Haverford Haverford Haverford Haverford Haverford Row One Hiaairzs, Fwd Hartrziazz, l.'l'l,CIL1CjllllI, rfzp taint, Urclzl, Turk, N, Pint Row Two Kfrterer Hruah D. Practically a new forward line had to be built. As the scoring depends on the line, the weakness of these players was evi- denced by the scores. The baclctield remained almost unchanged from last season. While close cofoperation between the two parts of the team did not result in numerous wins, it did result in very close games Cn the whole the team had a poor season, winninq only two aarnes and losinq six.
