'Quik I K, Xa ffl., ,X Kjjjffffi' I s ...f fy f- fha! f I 'a asv' . , 1 U.S.S.HAVERF1ELD DER 393j X iii Ship 's History U,S,S, HAVERFIELD CDER 3935 was originally commis- sioned as DE-393 in Houston, Texas on 30 August, 1943 with the primary mission to hunt and destroy enemy sub- marines. The ,HAVERFIELD was dedicated to the memory of Ensign James W, Haverfield, who was reported missing in action aboard U,S,S, Arizona at Pearl Harbor on '7 December, 1941. During the long war years HAVERFIELD achieved an outstanding war record, and was officially rec- ognized by being presented with the Presidential Unit Citation for heroic and successful service against enemy submarines. At the end of World War II HAVERFIELD was placed in mothballs and for many years lay dormant until the Cold War required her services. On 4 January 1955, after being extensively, modified, HAVERFIELD was placed in com- mission as DER 393 with the primary mission of a picket ship, providing early warning, and detection of enemy a.ir- craft. From April, 1959 to March, 1965, HAVERFIELD became part of the Pacific Barrier, and later from her new home- port of Guam, Marianas Islands, afforded anti-submarine protection for the Marianas area, as well as performing rescue at sea and disaster assistance missions. During this time HAVERFIELD was also the first destroyer es- cort to maintain patrol in the Taiwan Straits. In March 1965 HAVERFIELD arrived in her new homeport of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and was assigned to Escort Squadron FIVE, On 19 June 1965 HAVERFIELD once again headed West... this time to South Vietnam. The DER had again become a vital part of our nation's defense by being assigned to patrol the South Vietnamese coast, guarding against in- filtration from North Vietnam by sea. This patrol duty became known as Operation Market Time. Since that first deployment in 1965 HAVERFIELD has returned to the Western Pacific for two more assignments with the Seventh Fleet, deployments of seven months, followed by five months in Pearl Harbor preparing for the next deployment. Most of the deployed time was spent as part of Operation Market Time, however during this most recent deployment which ended 4 December 1967, HAVERFIELD was also assigned patrol duties in the Taiwan Straits and as Station Ship Hong Kong. HAVER- FIELD will make her fourth deployment to the Western Pacific and Vietnam in May, 1968. l C
