HCIIGNS IN THE STENN Betty MacDonald has talked her two attractive teen-age daughters and some- what doubtful husband into sinking every cent they have in a home on an island in Puget Sound. As the unusual, and often uproarious, complications of island life begin to present themselves, the family murmurs, nC'est la Guerre,H and stares wistfully across the Lay toward the lights of the big, comfortable city. On their first day, the tide comes in unexpectedly, finding half of their pos- sessions on the beach. They catch a last glimpse of their washing machine bob- bing out to sea. The two girls see their entire future--boy friends and all- drifting away like the washing machine. The girls are at a painful stage-boy crazy, putting on lipstick to go gather driftwood, switching from hair curlers to hair straighteners, and always coming up with mysterious ailments to avoid homework. The complications develop. Betty is sunk--miserable at having, brought this apparent disaster on them all. Yet, in the midst of the humorous difficul- ties and despair, the family finds a special value in the life they are creat- ing. This is a brilliant and thoroughly enjoyable comedy. - - - - - often in a stew- - - - - - Betty MacDonald- - Anne -------- Joan -------- Howard ------- Roger- - - - - - - - Claud ---------- Claire Fessenden- - Don MacDonald --------- her husband- - - their older daughter- - - -their younger daughter - - -Anne's city boy friend - - -her local boy friend- ---..--3, - - Joan's steady- - - neighbor ------- Lesley Arnold ----- - - a chanming visitor- Margo ---------- Miss Garvey ------- - Bee Gee ----------- Salsie ----- - - KitsieL ------ - - - - teen - - - - teen-age friend- - - - - - - - -Joy Hartman Mrs. Watson's Harry ----- - a New-Motor Marvin- - Mr. Curtis ----- Mrs .
