This masterpiece is Unorthodox.' Once upon a time in the future there was a kid from somewhere who wanted to see what was in the crystal ball for the Havelock-Plover Class of 259. Therefore he went to see Shorty Hough, which rhymes with Hroughu to see what the old soothsayer could tell him. There was John Parris butchering hogs on Billy Campidilli's ranch while Tom Clausen was rounding up the dogies Cthat actually is cows, etc.j with his Chrysler. Suddenly, with a UHigh Ho, Silvern Delwyn raced by in his speedtoat. He actually didn't, because he didn't have a speed boat, but he had a notion he did--.ridiculous isn't it? Soon he had a message from HHurricane Kennyn Meredith and his bronco bustin' chaps that he, Kenny, was to report to General Alan Smith for further orders. Sitting on General Smith's right hand was his secretary, Maureen Kirby, who really kept the good general in line. lf he didn't stay that way, she kicked him right in the--ankle. Bobby Lu came floating into view with her pony tail caught in a cactus. A pony tried to help her out, but failed--goodby pony tail. Muriel was watching all this from her penthouse in the mountains. She was in a disgruntled mood. Why, you may ask? She was trying to watch the famous combo featuring Wayne HSwivel-Kneedu Cooper and his HMammy Singern Dick O'Neall, who sang only from his knees. Randall Larson was pounding shoe horns down a neighborhood sewage disposal, which had been designed and built by scientist Harriet Vial to dispose of sewage even if there was no sewage. Sometimes in the course of human events, something SPECTACULAH comes along. Strangely enough, not one clod in the class got anywhere or did anything special. They came close one time, though, when Roger Gill got a job painting sewer pipes in assorted pastel colors. What now? There's Charles, who was studying law while entertaining diversified nonconformists. He had hit upon the idea of instructing lower grade imbeciles in the art of school teaching. Donna Hansen waved from her study, where she wrote books, mostly mysteries, on why did Wyatt Earp? It was a minor success, selling about three copies. One of the buyers was Jim Vavricka, a promising inventor, who took heart and was put in jail for it. However, he did receive a gold medal from Pillsbury best. Another peak into the crystal ball showed a smog reminiscent of the heavy atmos- phere of school. In it was Dick Bartosh, M. D., who discovered that Jim Dexter, while busy barbering, had developed a gall stone in his left toe, which was unusual because Jim usually had one in his right toe. Next door to Jim was his neighbor Nancy, who owned a bookie joint - yes, she loved books. Nancy had only one thing amiss - she couldn't read. Slowly coming into view was the Metropolitan Opera. There was Phyllis Wienhold and her Frenchy French Horn - and you know who's French. The principle singer was Joy Hartman, singing a vibrant bass, which really inspired the lead dancer, Darla Maulsby. Sitting in the audience was Joan Levene, happily married and with twelve children Cit's possiblel, enjoying it immensely. Operating the curtains was Konnie Schabacker, whose incessant punctuality was apparent, as the curtains opened and shut exactly on time, even in the middle of a scene. ' Bonnie Hanish was tripping up and down the aisles, a millionaire from the returns of the peanut concession. And there, too, was Joan O'Neall, cashier, feeding her pet penguins apple seeds while keeping KOOL. At this point Sharon Colee apparently realized it was time for a change and went into the diaper business which shows at least one of the gang was thinking. which all goes to show that Wall the world is a stage and the men and women in it are merely p1ayers.U - a quotation picked up from somewhere. Our chaperones were Sup't. Mclntosh, Mrs. Mclntosh, Hrs. Burgardt, and Mrs. Garlock. We traveled in a chartered bus fron1Fort Dodge. we arrived on the outskirts of kansas City about seven o'clock in the morning alter a not-so-restful night. We d1dn't find our hotel, the Kansas Citian, until alnost nine o'clock, so most of us went without breakfast. We were at the Board of Trade at nine-thirty for our first tour. Here, we saw a film and then went to the floor and Uyitn where the actual transactions were carried on. we found this tour interexting but baffling, because most of us had very little knowledge of the stock marxot. Thursday afternoon we visited the General Hotors Assembly plant. Here we w' chad the workers put together a car from start to flnish. The only part about this tour we didn't like was all that WALKING, the ground floor of the plant cover- ed over forty acres. Thursday evening we out on our HSunday bestu and went out for dinner. We ate at HThe Trail House,H one of the better restaurants in Kansas City. He liked the service, food and atmosphere, but not the size of the chock! After dinner we went to Cinerama and Saw HSouth 5eal5 Adventuren--or rather some of us Saw it, some of us slept through most of it, and one of us even walked in our sleep. After Cinerane we went to the hotel to get a good night'S rest. Some of us succeeded in attaining the goal set by our chaperones, but a few of us failed mis- orably. Friday morning we toured the Federal Reserve Bank. Most of us liked this tour the best, although all of them were fun, as well as educational. Friday afternoon we were to tour the Palmolivc Plant, but we got lost trying to find it, so we tour- ed the airport instead. lt wasn't long before we had to bid farewell to Kansas City and pile back into our trusty bus for the trek home. Supper found us in Clarinda. We finally got home about midnight Friday. We were twenty-eight happy, rumpled and tired Seniors- to say nothing of the chaperones. 26 CWAVZZL-5637 GQPJEIZZS Z7 Eleventh Grade First Row: Lois Sroufe, Carol Ann Sellers, Janet Cox, Janice McCullough Christy Colee, Cleo Lund, Lois Luft, Janet McCullough. The stage manager, instead of being hidden in the wings, takes a leading part in the play. The audience watches as the properties are moved about. Imagination has full sway. WOur Townn is a play which never loses its power to touch our deepest sensibilities. It evokes the beauty of the simple things. The Stage Manager says UThis is the way we were in our growing-up, and in our marrying, and in our doctoring, and in our living, and in our dying.H Many critics consider the final act the most vitally moving scene in the modern theater. It shows the peace and quiet of death which can never be under- stood by the living. As the unusual, and often uproarious, complications of island life begin to present themselves, the family murmurs, nC'est la Guerre,H and stares wistfully across the Lay toward the lights of the big, comfortable city. On their first day, the tide comes in unexpectedly, finding half of their pos- sessions on the beach. They catch a last glimpse of their washing machine bob- bing out to sea. The two girls see their entire future--boy friends and all- drifting away like the washing machine. The girls are at a painful stage-boy crazy, putting on lipstick to go gather driftwood, switching from hair curlers to hair straighteners, and always coming up with mysterious ailments to avoid homework. The complications develop. Betty is sunk--miserable at having, brought this apparent disaster on them all. Yet, in the midst of the humorous difficul- ties and despair, the family finds a special value in the life they are creat- ing.
