1964 JETSTREAM Volume VII Hauser High School Hope, Indiana Dedication MR. ERNEST CLAYTON We, the Class of 1964, dedicate our Jetstream yearbook to you, Mr. Ernest Clayton, for being our class sponsor for four years. You have been extremely patient and helpful as you guided us in our money-making pro- jects and in decorating for our prom. We wish to express our sincere appreciation to you for all your kind assistance and understanding. Mr. Clayton and his wife Harriet with their three children Jeanie, Nancy, and Charlie. Dear Students, Most of the deadlines for our 1964 yearbook having been completed, we, the editors, want to take time out to thank all those who helped in any way to make this yearbook possible. We wish to give special thanks to those who worked with us on the staff and to our advisor, Mrs. Webster. Without their efforts and devoted time, this yearbook would not have been possible. We hope that this year's Jetstream will, some time in the future, bring back some fond memories of this school year, 1964. In whatever degree of success or failure we may find ourselves in years to come, if a glance at these pages will lighten our labors, if only for a moment, we consider our yearbook worthwhile. We hope you enjoy the Jetstream. It has been ours for almost a year. Now it belongs to you. Sincerely, Assistant Editor 3 Contents Opening Section 1 Seniors 10 Underclassmen 22 Academic 28 Extra-Curricula r 46 Sports 58 Grades 70 Kindergarten 81 Advertising 82 The door to opportunity and challenge opens every morning. The door to the band room is a symbol of opportunity to express one's self through music. 29 Biology Is the Study of Life How can fish breathe under water? Why do children resemble their parents? What are the different classes of animals? What is photosynthesis? Through studying and participating in activities such as in the picture, the students, guided by Mr. Mil hous, discover the answers to the questions above. In the picture from left to right are Marcia Finke, Chuck Baker, David Phares, and Jim Moss. 30 Chemistry Is the Study of Matter and Energy Why study chemistry? What is the make-up of the atom? Who discovered oxygen and hydrogen? How many elements are there? What is ionic and covalent bonding? In chemistry class Mr. Clayton shows an interesting experiment to Darrell Holder, a senior, and Debbie Hatton, a junior. In their lab experiments the chemistry students can understand the why of many chemical reactions. 31 Math Teaches The freshman algebra class watches as a fellow classmate explains an equation at the blackboard. Betty Simmons writes a proof, Pat Smith gives symbols, and J. D. McQueen makes a drawing in Mrs. Utter's geometry class as the others look on. . 32 Logical Thinking Mrs. Utter explains an advanced algebra problem to Sara Deiwert, Kathy Lortz, Darlene Bailey, and John Deckard before class. The Senior math class works on their Temac as Mrs. Utter grades tests. The class uses a text book dur-ing the second semester. Languages Advance Mr. Melson, sophomore English teacher, is here teaching the sophomore boys the essentials of our English language, which will help them to become better citizens of the United States. Mrs. Wickens, speech teacher, observes Rick Teltoe as he presents his speech for the day. Speech makes students more conscious of the opinions and lives of others, and in addition gives them a means of self-expression. 34 Communications The Latin I class, taught by Mrs. Clouse, looks at the complex Latin sentence structure which has just been written on the board. Mr. King, Spanish instructor, observes Tom Redmon and Rosaiyn Schaefer as they converse in Spanish. Spanish, being taught for the first year at Hauser, aroused much interest as three periods of Spanish are presently being taught. 35 Social Studies Ranges from In Mr. Wickard's sociology class, students study the relations of the individual to his government. It shows and explains problems encountered by youth and ways of overcoming these problems. Other Social Studies classes are World History and Geography, taught by Mr. McQueen, citizenship, taught by Mr. Duckworth, and civics taught by Mr. Wickard during the second semester. 36 Caveman to Spaceman U. S. History teaches students about their early ancestors and life in our country from its discovery until life today. Above a group of Mr. McQueen’s U. S. History students report about some of our early ancestors while summarizing the chapter. In these classes students learn more about our government, world, history, and life. 37 Hauser offers General Business Training, Bookkeeping, Typing 1 and 2, Shorthand 1 and 2, and Business Arithmetic. Pictured above are Bill Zaring, standing at blackboard discussing posting from the Sales Journal with Nancy Knifley, Eris Johnson, and Don Herron, students in Mrs. Webster's bookkeeping class. 38 Accuracy First,-Speed Second Above Shorthand I students are practicing shorthand for next day's assignment. Mrs. Webster watches. Nimble fingers of Typing I class help them to become good typists. Mr. Wickard assists students with problems they encounter while typing. 39 Mrs. Burney, at right, looks on as Mary McQueen and Claudia Miller mix up a batch of cookies. At left Paula Miller and Doris Baute wait to do their part. Boys Learn Useful Skills in Farm Shop The boys study from books until spring when they apply what they've learned by working in the Farm Shop Building. Home Ec. Prepares Future Homemakers 40 Phys. Ed. Builds Fitness Physical education is ever important in our modern life. Through physical education we develop our body so that it is capable of carrying on the heavy load of our life. At right, a group of Mrs. Wicken's physical education class participates in a game of basketball, while Mr. Milhous's class participates in a game of crabball. Health Teaches It Mr. Milhous' Health Class learns about the fitness and care of the body. Since it is important to have good knowledge of healthful living, Mr. Milhous tries to get each student to answer questions about it. 41 The Marching Jets” The Marching Jets stand at attention in block formation on the basketball floor with Drum Major Donnie Taylor in front. Each of these students is assigned a period to help in Mr. Rowe's office. They run errands, operate the mimeograph machine, post notices on the bulletin boards, and distribute mail. 45 Extra-Curricular Activities The Roaring Twenties was the theme and setting for last year's Prom. The Prom is an annual dance given by the juniors for the graduating seniors. Everyone had a wonderful time, especially the teachers, who thought the Prom's decorations and entertainment were outstanding and one of the best Proms they had ever seen. Maybe the reason the teachers enjoyed that particular theme so much was because they remembered that era so vividly. This particular door was the entrance way to last year's Prom and presented to us an escape from our humdrum world to the wild, gay atmosphere of the Roaring Twenties. Jetstream Opens the Door to the Year’s Memories BACK ROW: Brent Wells, Dan Titus, Barbara McKinney, Janet Nading, Tom Stafford, Mrs. Webster. Seated at the table are Karen Norris and Dave Curry. Dan Titus Editor Tom Stafford Activities Editor Janet Nading Associate Editor Brent Wells Sports Editor Barbara McKinney Grade Editor Karen Norris Junior Editor Dave Curry Junior Editor Guyneth Webster Advisor The publication of this Jetstream has come about after a year of planning and working. The staff met during the second period on Monday through Friday and the students often did outside work in order to meet all deadlines. At the beginning of school, the 1963 Jetstream received a certificate of merit with a grade of B from the National School Yearbook Association. An advertising campaign was conducted throughout September and October. Subscription sales were started on October 30. On December 13, at the half of the Crothers-ville game, Lizabeth Glick was crowned Miss Basketball for the 1963-1964 season. This honor was given to the candidate collecting the most penny votes for the Jetstream by the end of the month's campaign. During the winter months, the staff was busy laying out pictures, writing copy, and typing. All this work has been done to bring you a bigger and be better annual in the 1964 Jetstream. 48 News Relayed by Interceptor Starting at front left to right: Anita Ray, feature and general news editor; Don Herron, sports editor and mimeograph; Sharon Taylor, assistant editor, and feature editor; Nancy Knifley, business manager and organizations editor; Janet Nading, editor-in-chief and sports editor; Eris Johnson, general news editor; Cynthia Holder, business manager and classes editor; Nancy Norman, art editor and grades editor; Mrs. Webster, adviser; Bill Zaring, mimeograph. In 1931, this ancient “Indiana” truck was a record breaker. Powered by Cummins Diesel, it went 14,600 miles without an engine stop —13,535 miles without a truck stop—10,005 miles without refueling. More than just setting new records, the dramatic event marked the diesel’s entry into the trucking industry. Growth of Cummins Engine Company in the trucking field has been even more dramatic. From a small operation housed in a garage, Cummins has become the world’s largest independent producer of high speed diesel engines, with over 1,000 sales and service points throughout the United States and the free world. New compact V6 and V8 diesels are the result of our continuing efforts to force the pace of the industry. Little over a year old, these remarkable gas-size diesels have already set records for efficiency and economy. If you are seeking a challenging career with a growing organization, we encourage you to investigate the opportunities with our Company.
