1963 JETSTREAM volume Vi HAUSER HIGH SCHOOL HOPE, INDIANA We, the class of 1963, dedicate this Jetstream to you, Mrs. Burney and Mr. Wickard, for all the help you have been to us as sponsors. Your patience and unselfish efforts to guide us have instilled in us a deep respect for you and a determination to make you proud of us. Dear Classmates, We at Hauser, although we are only 1027 strong, feel that our future is not measured in numbers, but in academic and social accomplishments. Here, we have laid the foundation for our futures, through constant personal attention by our teachers and a close association with our fellow students. In the pages of this book, the Jetstream Staff has tried to record today's events and tomorrow’s memories. We of the staff hope that this 1963 Jetstream will suit this purpose and that its worth will increase each year. Sincerely, Bud Herron Loraine Clouse 3 CONTENTS SENIORS 10 UNDERCLASSMEN 11 CLASSES IS ACTIVITIES 48 SPORTS 58 GRADES 11 ADS SI KINDERGARTEN 106 MR. HAUSER HIGH CONCERT BAND Concert Band, under the direction of Paul D. Riddle, is one of Hauser's biggest boasts. This year's band, we at Hauser feel, is greatly improved even over the state first wining band of last year. Our band department is one of the finest and gives students a basis for more advanced music study and a well-rounded general music knowledge. Majorettes, Lower Left: Sonna Hamilton. Lynette Arnold, Lizabeth Glick, Drum Major Steve Marlin, Phyliss Rutan, Teresa Herron and Barbara Nussmire, add sparkle to our marching unit and always demonstrate fine showmanship and talent. Dance Band, lower right, composed of First Row, Left to Right: John Beck, Tenor Sax; Steve Marlin, Tom Marlin, John Reed, Alto Sax, Second Row: Rick Robinette. Steve Epperson, Sam Diewert, Earl Shay, Cornet. Third Row: Dean Young, John Harris, Trombone; Darrill Holder, Baritone; John Wright, Tuba; Roger Johnson, Drums. Band Officers are: Steve Marlin. President; Roger Johnson, Vice-President; Judy Huntsman. Secretary; John Wright, Treasurer; Loraine Clouse. Librarian; and Earl Shay, Reporter. PLAYS ON The chorus, which will attend the Choral Festival and the Chorus and Band Contest later in the year, worked hard to prepare the Christmas Concert, which they gave jointly with the band on December 19, 1962. Many organizations of the community have called on the services of talented members for special entertainment during their meetings. Possibilities of doing excerpts of George Gershwin's popular musical Porgy and Bess for the Spring Concert are in the planning stage. CHORUS PROVES MUSIC HATH CHARMS.” PHYSICAL EDUCATION Mental ability and achievement is of little importance without a well developed and trained body to carry out its ideas. Our school life is planned to be the ground-work of our future, and we can take nothing better into life than physical fitness. The pictures at the left show a small part of Hauser's physical development program. FOR HEALTH Good health is not only approached by direct practice at Hauser, but also by theory in our excellent Health Department. Health class, under Mr. Thayer, tries to give each student a good knowledge of healthful living which is ever increasingly more important in modern life. 33 AUDIO VISUAL DEPT. MAKES LEARNING EASIER In the photo above Don Herron at the right and Jackie Banks, in center, are showing Ronald McIntosh, a new member of the staff this year, the finer points of the projector. DRIVERS EDUCATION PREPARES FOR YEARS AHEAD In the photo above Mr. Frank Melson shows girls, left to right: Eris Johnson, Karen Hudson, Sarah Diewert, and Gail , Philyaw, the different parts of the motor. 34 FARM SHOP STRIVES FOR SAFETY Above, Left to Right: Frances Daily, Thelbert Mings, Mr. Clayton, Sponsor; Joe Willock and Carl Artis, showing the proper way to use an acetylene torch safely in the shop and at home. SCHOOL PATROL PROTECTS GRADE CHILDREN The high school students have given their time to make sure that the grade school children make it home safely. In the photo at the right they are from left to right: Tom Richards, Tom Redman, Mike Shaw, Roger Johnson, Jackie Banks, Ray Walton and Bill Zaring. 35 SCIENCE: FROM ATOM Students take science for a variety of reasons, some as a background for future vocations; others just to gain useful information about the world we live in. Science is ever present in the lives of everyone and no one can say that they have a complete education without a basic knowledge of this important subject. For this reason, biology is required of all Hauser freshmen and each student showing interest or promise is urged to further his education with pyhsics and chemistry. Laboratory facilities at Hauser are at a minimum and will probably remain in this condition until a new school is built. Students generally agree, however, that this lack of facilities is more than made up by the large amount of practical theory that they receive. 36 TO THE MOON Above, Larry SR Pittman and Jim Cooper are showing a chemical laboratory demonstration experiment in making hydrogen gas. At the left, Brent Wells and Patti Paetzel are demonstrating to their physics class the slide rule and its uses. At the top of the previous page, John Trimnell, Ann Stafford, and Lizabeth Glick are doing research with a microscope in their freshman biology class. 37 MATH CAN BE FUN 38 In the senior math class they mix play with work by making mobiles, folding stars, sewing curved stiching, and doing puzzles. In the picture above, Earl Shay is making a twenty-pointed star while Loraine Clouse holds a mobile which she has made from cellophane drinking straws combined with Christmas bells. Steve Marlin at left seems to be watching them while Mrs. Utter works at her desk. C.P.C.F.E. Sara Diewert, left, and Jim Stater, at the right, are making constructions on the blackboard while Mike Beck, center, writes the proof of an exercise in sophomore geometry taught by Mrs. Utter, who is checking papers. LET X=THE UNKNOWN Algebra equations are being solved at blackboard by freshmen, left to right: Mathino Frazier-Bey, Jerry Turner, and Jesse Gentry while John Beck, sitting looks on, and Mrs. Utter checks papers. 39 In the upper left, students are learning Latin. This language constitutes an important source of the derivation of many of our English words. By elimination, certain students participate in the Indiana High School Achievement Program. Center, as she reads Run, Spot, Run , Nancy Gilliland learns the proper methods of presentation. Correct usage in standard form is striven for in all English Classes. At the right, debating highlights the speech class. Research for delivery, poise, gestures, and tone quality are principles for the development of good oratory powers. Five-minute speeches terminate the course. 40 LANGUAGE: SCHOOLS COMMON TOOL SOCIAL STUDIES: HOW WE LIVE Social studies, the study of our country, our world, and the part we each play in making our world a better place in which to live, teaches us of our American heritage. Every citizen of the United States should have a basic knowledge of the growth of our nation. Armed with this weapon and an understanding of the ideals of democracy, he will be able to combat all forces derogatory to our welfare. In the upper left, Mr. A. J. McQueen points out to his sophomore world history class the location of the Black Sea. Lower left, Bailey Smith writes the names of the former presidents, while the junior U. S. History class and instructor, Jim Thayer, look on. Above, Karl Heilman reports on religion to the senior sociology class, as teacher, Tesh Wickard, mentally notes class behavior. In the fourth social studies course, Civics, offered second semester, seniors learn about the workings of their government. 43 BUSINESS EDUCATION Students in Period 4, one of the bookkeeping classes, are working on a practice set of books for Bradford Wholesale Gorcery under the direction of Mrs. Webster, and are applying the fundamental bookkeeping equation, A=L+P, daily. 44 BUILDS SALABLE SKILLS Typing I taught by Mr. Wickard standing, are doing business forms, and problems encountered in their own personal lives, and in business. Martha Moore, as student sales representative for Dictation Disc. Co., is demonstrating records to Shorthand I class for home use to develop speed. Mrs. Webster is watching. 45 HOME EC. TEACHES HOME ARTS In the photo above Doris Houchens, standing is showing the proper way to serve tea to (going clockwise) Mary Barton, Beverly Fiesbeck, Linda Gates, and Carolyn Bush. The girls enjoy preparing and serving food to one another. The Home Economics girls are learning to make a straight seam. They are: Mary Cook, Dana Herron, Linda Smith, Pat Smith, Barbara Keller, Joyce Caldwell, and Diana Hedrick. They delight in making household articles, gifts, and clothing for themselves and their families. GUIDANCE Our newest department, guidance, is headed by Mr. A. J. McQueen and Mr. Ernest Clayton. Through it many services are made available to the student body. Among these is information concerning scholarships for college application, and vocational placements. Personal recommendations, class index, and testing services are processed through this office. 47 JETSTREAM STAFF LEFT TO RIGHT: Dick Herndon, Guyneth Webster, Loraine Clouse, Janet Nading, Jack Banks, Vicky DeBusk, Bud Herron, Dan Titus. Powered by Cummins Diesel, it went 14,600 miles without an engine stop —13,535 miles without a truck stop—10,005 miles without refueling. More than just setting new records, the dramatic event marked the diesel's entry into the trucking industry. Growth of Cummins Engine Company in the trucking field has been even more dramatic. From a small operation housed in a garage, Cummins has become the world’s largest independent producer of high speed diesel engines, with over 1,000 sales and service points throughout the United States and the free world. New compact V6 and V8 diesels are the result of our continuing efforts to force the pace of the industry. Little over a year old, these remarkable gas-size diesels have already set records for efficiency and economy. If you are seeking a challenging career with a growing organization, we encourage you to investigate the opportunities with our Company.
