But to the seniors at H.H.S., this decade will always be remembered as, Saturday nite at Lamey's . . . noon at Will's . . . initiations . . . getting our class jackets and rings . . . decorating for the prom . . . prom nite . . . falling plaster . . . Christmas parties . . . the class play . . . standing outside on a cold morning waiting for the bell . . . praying for snow . . . report cards . . . pep sessions . . . basket- ball games . . . We dedicate this page to the memory of Mrs. Sara Harper, our Home Economics teacher, who passed away on Feb. 21, 1970. Mrs. Harper was born in Danville, Illinois where she received her elementary and secondary education. She received her degree in Home Eco- nomics from Indiana State Teachers College, in Terre Haute (Indiana State University). She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority. She taught school in her hometown, East Chicago, East Posey Co., Wadesville, North Posey, and had been at Haubstadt High for eight years. Mrs. Harper organized the F.H.A. at Haubstadt High and was a sponsor of many proms and various senior classes. Mrs. Harper is missed by all who knew her, not only as a teacher but as a counselor and as a friend to all her many students. 28 SENIORS senior class officers President--Dave Spindler Secretary--Judy Lamey Vice-President--Alan Chamberlain Treasurer--Nancy Hasenour Reporter--Sarah Weber 30 JOHN BESING Basketball 1,2,3,4; Baseball 1,2,3,4; Cross Country 1,2,3,4; Tennis 3,4; MARCIA ADAMSON Track 1,2,3,4; Class Play 4; Science Club 3,4; Athletic Club 3,4. And as the cheerleaders feel, it will always be this way especially during basketball season. It is not just the students that back the team but the parents, relatives and friends as well. When we play our rivals, Fort Branch, and beat ’em, the enthusiasm is unbelieveable. The high point of the season was winning the first game we played in the sectional. Mt. Vernon was well surprised when the Mighty ELITES came on the floor. Varsity Cheerleaders: Diane Fetter, Cindy TenBarge, Shirley Kiesel, and Pam Lamey. 64 Reserve Cheerleaders: Cindy Minnette, Jonelle Meier, Nancy Woehler, Diane McKinney. Jr. High Cheerleaders: Nancy Besing, Tera Logue, Debbie Tucker, Mia Dilbeck, Tina Eckiss. 65 basketball From the beginning of the 1969-1970 basketball season, the ELITES were filled with enthu- siasm and spirit. Our senior players Jim Helfrich, Dave Adler, Norm Simon, John Besing, Bob Elpers and Dave Spindler made outstanding showings for their last year. This season's record was 7 wins and 13 losses. The most exciting game for the Elites was the Ft. Branch game, especially since this was the 2nd consecutive year we beat our rivals. The Elite fans went wild about the winning of the Mt. Vernon game in the sectional. Some spectators from other schools said the Haubstadt fans acted like they had won the state finals. Our boys felt that this season was fairly good but could have been better. The biggest factor that helped the ELITES was the reliable fans that backed them all through the season, even when the times were going bad like the Holiday Tourney. The basketball players thought the only reason for their accomplishments was because of the great coaching staff and their fine techniques. They all agreed that Mr. Priar is the best coach in southern Indiana. Mr. Heuring, coach of the second team, also helped this season's record a great deal. Mr. Priar said, I was well sat- isfied with the team this past season considering their size. And I am looking forward to coaching next year's varsity team into a winning season. 66 VARSITY TEAM: FIRST ROW left to right: Mike Meny, Coach Priar, and Danny Kiesel. Director The Senior Class Play was finally presented on October 21-22 after four hard weeks of day and night practices. The play was not all hard work, though. The romantic scenes between Mable and Clif, the fist swinging of Nona, the shots ringing through the dark kept the crowd thrilled and the cast happy. The play was said to be the best one ever presented at HHS. The last performance was followed by an all-cast party in Mr. Priar's basement. 74 fall festival Most of the fun of the Fall Festival was during the afternoon's carnival. Each class had a stand and the PTA served food. Towards the end of the festival, there was a talent show and the queen crowning. The queen was chosen by penny votes from each class' candidates, which were: Senior, Pauline Breedlove; Junior, Diane Vaught; Sophomore, Carol Wade; and Freshman, Cathy Dilbeck. Cathy and her escort, Jeff Riffert, reigned as this year's royalty. A prince, Kevin Miley, and a princess, Betty Eye, were also chosen. All this was followed by a sock hop featuring Tuesday's Child . 76 harvest ball A new and welcome event on this year's agenda was the Harvest Ball, sponsored by the FHA. The old gym resembled hillbilly country with an old shack porch and deco- rations of corn stalks and bales of straw, which were also used as the seats. There was also a night scene backdrop behind The Unpredictables , who supplied the evening music. Sheila Hoefling and her date Kenny Maikranz were chosen as the best dressed couple attending. christmas party Much hard work and effort went into this year’s annual high school Christmas party, but it was worth it for the gym was deco- rated beautifully. As an added attraction this year, Bot Minnette and his Melotones provided the entertainment, including a solo by our own Alan Chamberlain. As tradition has it, Santa Claus was the highlight of the evening when he came to present the gifts. 79 queen crowning QUEEN Judy Lamey SENIOR ATTENDANTS Barb Ziliak Loris Wolfe JUNIOR ATTENDANTS Lisa May Lynn Sheridan SOPHOMORE ATTENDANTS Carol Wade Karen Helfrich FRESHMAN ATTENDANTS Cindy Hipp Jackie Weber VARSITY CHEERLEADERS Cindy TenBarge Diane Fetter Shirley Kiesel Pam Lamey RESERVE CHEERLEADERS Cindy Minnette Diana McKinney Jonelle Maier Nancy Woehler CROWN BEARER Julie Schmitt BASKETBALL BEARER Rocky Will BASKETBALL TEAM Jim Helfrich—Capt. As she entered the gym, a line of shield bearers and saluters greeted her. When she reached the center of the gym, amid her court, captain Jim Helfrich, placed the dainty tiara upon her head and John Besing, co-captain, presented her with a scepter. Then they both gave her the traditional kiss. Queen Judy then dubbed the captain and co-captain, who escorted her to her throne where she reigned as queen for the rest of the evening. 80 SSS formal initiation S.S.S. Formal Initiation was held November 15 in the school auditorium. Nancy Bittner and Lynn Sheridan pre - sented S.S.S. pins to 31 freshmen girls, 1 sophomore girl, and 1 senior girl. Sister Jennifer of Sts. Peter and Paul gave a talk on the role of women in modern society. A reception for the new members followed in the Home Economics department. Arriving at New York's La Guardia Airport, the class was swept into a whirlwind of activity. New York is re- membered as: millions of taxis, the beauty of Lincoln Center, terrible food at outrage- ous prices, the glamour of the Radio City Rockettes, taking hundreds of snapshots, waiting in lines, the Statue of Liberty, the U.N., riding the elevator all night, rain and exhaustion. The five hour bus ride through the rain to Washington was a good time for everyone to catch up on his sleep and or to display his special talents. The remainder of the trip was spent touring most of the famous landmarks of the Washington area. Washington was: climbing the 8?? steps of the Washington Monument, constant hunger, the impressiveness of the Lincoln Memorial at night, a quick dip in the motel pool, the Capitol and White House, lunch at McDonald's, a visit to the graves of John and Robert Kennedy, drag- ging around Mt. Vernon, and then, HOME! 94 97 graduation class of 1970 colors: green and gold flower: yellow rose motto: knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers 98 At 8:00 on May 21 the class of 1970 filed into the new gym to the strains of Pomp Circumstance. Each senior girl carried a single yellow rose. The gym was deco- rated in green and gold with bouquets of yellow carnations. The class of 1920 was honored; Dave Adler, valedictorian, and Lucy Ziliak, salutatorian, spoke; Bobbie Ziliak received the Citizenship Award; Mr Chamberlain passed out diplomas; the class flipped their tassels and suddenly it was all over. With tears of happiness and sorrow, the class marched off the stage. 99 index Adamson, Marcia 31,56,57,58,60,74, 75 Adler, Dave 31,59,60,66,67,70,72 Adler, Joan 46,58,60 Adler, Susan 50,57,58,60
