THE HAT In Commemoration URING the winter of 1778-one of the most trying periods of the Revolutionary struggle-Washington, with his shattered battalions, marched up the banks of the Schuylkill and sought refuge in the bleak hills of Valley Forge. Upon taking the field he established his headquarters at Graeme Park, on County Line. Considering the former situation too much exposed, he soon afterward changed his quarters to Rodman's Farm, and finally moved down York Road to the Crooked Billet, where he encamped. The battle of Crooked Billet, now Hatboro, was fought on the first day of May, 1778. The American troops were encamped in a large wood at the upper end of Crooked Billet on the farm of Samuel Irvine. General Lacey was quartered in a stone house on the opposite side of these troops. After a few skirmishes the Americans retreated, passing through the village of Iohnsville, and on until they reached Hartville, on the Bristol Road, where they turned left, into a wood. These incidents of the great Revolution are now marked by two monuments-one erected in 1908 on York Road and another, on Iacksonville Road, just recently dedicated during the Sesqui- Centennial celebration in Hatboro-also by the old-fashioned sign- posts along York Road at either entrance of the town. And on the cover of our beloved year book and upon the Senior rings is the same reminder of this historical occurrence. In the one hundred and fiftieth year after the battle of Crooked Billet we still can understand and feel the urge which prompted those men to endure the hardships and privations of war, that this nation might prosper even unto the sesqui-centennial of its birth.
