l l l l THE HAT 5 Crooked Billet ument HE erection of the Crooked Billet Mo ument was the outgrowth of a meeting of a literary society which held regular meetings in Loller Hall, Hatboro. At one of these meetings hel about 1860, General W. W. H. Davis, upon invitation, read an interesting historical account of the Crooked Billet Battle. At the conclusion of the paper William K. Goentner, a well- known resident of Hatboro, made an address stating that it would be a good idea to erect a monument to commemorate tl11is battle and offering to give the ground on which to locate the shaft. The idea was favorably received. Afterward officers were elected forming the Monument Association. This association attended to the needed repairs fot many years until it was trans- ferred to the borough of Hatboro, which now olwns it. On Iuly 4, 1908, a celebration was held tl commemorate the one hundred thirtieth anniversary of the Battle of Crooked il3illet5 at this time three cannons were placed on the lot and were dedicated wit appropriate services. Thus' the community of Hatboro dedicated the monument to the brave men, who in the dark days of the Revolutio had risked their all and some had even given their lives upon that field to ecure our liberties. i aisle- 4
