MARGARETHA UERLING School Board Member 1975 to 1981 lt is a pleasure to bring greetings to the student body of Hastings High School in this outstanding school year. When we consider the record of the athletic teamsg the continued excellence of our musical organizationsg the activi- ties of the debate and forensic teamsg and the very constructive activities of the student council, it makes all of us proud to be associated with the high school and its students. All of these good things happened while our scho- lastic and academic excellence has been maintained. Superintendent Louis J. Kishkunas Strasheim Confident of System Mr. Dwayne Strasheim, school board President, said, I am es- pecially confident about what is happening in Hastings. We have nine dedicated school board members. We have intelligent, well-trained, and enthusiastic ad- ministrators, teachers, and sup- port staff who take their jobs se- riously. He felt the highlight of the year was the Beatrice game. He also made comments on the year in general. I think the first year was a learning experience for all of us. We did really well with the number of boys out and the tough schedule. We played against some excellent teams and players. Welre shooting for 30 more players next year. Mitch Fraser and Bill Feis were the leading tacklers with 79 and 59 respectively. Darryn Dieken was the leading receiver with an average of 23 yards. Fraser also led the team in scor- ing and rushing, with 5 touchdowns and 690 yards in 8 games for an average of 86 yards per game. The teamls offense had a to- tal of 1650 yards- 1357 yards rushing and 273 yards passing for an average of 237 yards per game. Mark Kister and Mitch Fraser were both members of the Big 10 and Trans- Nebr. Conference teams. Bill Feis was also a mem- ber of the Trans team, and he along with Mitch Hinrichs re- ceived Honorable Mention on the Big 10 team. The season team totals: 214 yards rushing against G.I.Barr, 237 yards rushing against Co- lumbus, and 138 total yards of passing against G.I.Northwest were some of the highlights. A solid defensive unit could boast of successful, game-win- ning, goal-line stands against Kearney,G.I.Barr, and Columbus where an intercepted pass was returned for a record 98 yards for a touchdown by Curt Rutt. TEAM HAS GO0D YEAR The 1981 tennis team had 9 lettermen this season, 4 seniors and 5 juniors. This was the larg- est number of lettermen in re- cent years. The two most out- standing players this year were 3-year-lettermen Steve Sholtz and Ken Zaroban. Ken played in the number one singles position in the tournaments and led the team in singles victories. Steve Sholtz was number one on the challenge ladder all year and played number one doubles in all tournaments. I-le was elected to recieve the Hastings Tennis Association award as the out- standing player this season. Steve and junior Lynn Francis led the team in scoring this year. Together they made the quarter-finals at state. They lost in a close three-set match against the eventual state dou- bles champions from Norfolk. Mike Falk, another senior, won two matches at state before los- ing in the quarter-finals. Coach Fike summed up the season saying: We had a very young team this year with only 2 returning lettermen. Our 5-4 dual record was fairly good con- sidering our lack of experience. The 5-4 dual record was very indicative of our season as we lost 3 matches by the score of 5-4. FALL PLAY BIG HIT The fall play, The Missing Link, played to enthusiastic crowds both Friday and Satur- day night. This well written play was interpreted delightfully by its young cast. Making strong debuts were Susan Ganow as Lindy, and Steve McKinnis as Simmon. Lisa Norwood, also in her debut per- formance was a highlight of the third act. Diane Boese, another newcomer, stole the show with her portrayal of Fiona, the trod- den-down secret admirer of Simmon. Unfortunately, talented actor Paul Brownlee, was forced to give up the role of Jake, due to health reasons. Thom Howard was able to pick up the part and he gave a marvelous perfor- mance in it. Ironically, this year's ingenue, Lisa Westermann, played the oldest character in the story. She shows promise and will cer- tainly be here next year. Jim Myers, in the leading role, showed himself to be no begin- ner. Old familiars Gwen Conaway, Larry Holcombe, and Sue Schmidt were a major part of this thoroughly enjoyable play. Regan Copple was really con- vincing in his role as a savage. The man behind all the won- derful performances is Ronald Veberg, theatre teacher here at HHS. Not only did he direct the play, but he also decided on the set. Gwen perpares to go to the wedding while Larry perpares for Bermuda Above: Corey and Rick hard at work. BAND HAS GREAT YEAR And the troops go marching on, as did our Tiger Marching Band to a most successful season of Mr. Dale D. Duensing. The strong marching band of 135 start ed their season with a victory at York. This was the third consecu tive year the band has been named, Best Overall Band. From there they acquired 28 more members by adding the Tigerettes, and together they marched to a victory at Melody Round-Up and to a second place finish in Harvest of Harmony. But the band didn't stop there, they went on to receive a Division I in field competition later on in the afternoon. To finish out this mis sion, the band worked hard, ex celled on the field, and acquired some pride to receive a Division I at the Nebraska State Marching Band Festival, otherwise known as Pershing . The cheerleaders attended a camp at the University of Lincoln to learn new cheers, chants, and routines. They brought a trophy and a spirit stick home to start the season off with pep and spirit. Enthusiasm and spirit was pro- moted to the student body through pep rallies throughout the changing seasons. Well in the words of three year member Gwen Conaway, Its a group of people that like drama that get together on Tuesday nights and Thursdays after school and have a lot of fun! As Gwen said, Kosmet Club met on Tuesday nights and Thursdays after school in room 88. Their meetings were a place where people who liked to perform could do so by putting on plays, skits, and other programs to the other members. Besides putting on performances for each other, Kosmet Club is re- sponsible for the fall and senior plays. They all agreed that it was hard work, but well worth it in the end. The group was led by Mr. Ron- ald Veburg, who is also the acting instructor. Tbe group consisted of twenty members with the following officers: President-Alma Lowry, Vice- President-Larry Holcombe, Secretary-Diane Boese, and Treasurer-Lisa Norwood. Lil' Abnern is based on the comic strip by Al Capp. It is about the hillbillys living in Dogpatch U.S.A., which has been selected as the most un- necessary town in the country. Since Dogpatch was selected as the most unnecessary town in the country, it was therefore the perfect site for nuclear tests. It is left to the people of Dogpatch to find something necessary in their town. It appears that some- thing necessary is found when Mammy Yokum produces her secret formula of Yokumberry tonic which makes musclemen out of weaklings. However Gen- eral Bullmoose, a slu and caniving politician set Evil Eye Fleagle to work with his double whammy to get the secret for- mula from Lil' Abner. The musical showed how the people of Dogpatch try to foil General Bullmooses plans and save their town. Senior Rob Harding played the lead role of Lil, Abner and Julie Crowley had the female lead as Daisy May. Other lead- ing members of the cast were Bill Feis as Earthquake McGoon, Joe Anderson as Pappy Yokum, Sarah McDougal as Mammy Yokum, Tom Pringle as Marrin, Sam and Jamey evans as Gener- al Bullmoose. The theme was the Best of Times and couples danced to the music of Rex Hedding. Golf carts carried the pairs to the doors where door- men awaited them. Upon en- trance they were greeted by happy ticket-takers and coat check girls. Streamers were hung everywhere and on the landing was a couple we mod- eled our dancing style after. Be- fore entering the gym we no- ticed an array of senior stars from the past year and inside was a various assemble of movie stars from the past.
