Text from Pages 1 - 164 of the 1988 volume:

Pieces Octn, 'Pwfftef THE PIECES OF OUR PUZZLE. What is that supposed to mean? Well, to tell you the truth, I’m not exactly sure. You see, during the first long days of the school year the 1988 editors contemplated in the publications room. We were faced with the important decision of determining the theme of this year’s yearbook. Several ideas were batted around but, eventually we settled on “The pieces of our puzzle.” The students and faculty of H.H.S. are one big puzzle. Each one of you is an integral part of this puzzle. H.H.S. would not be complete without you. Without the dedication of many people this book would not have been possible. I wish to thank the 1988 staff members for all of their time. To the other editors, Karla, Sue, Shannon, and Rebecca, — you all did a super job!!! And finally to Mrs. Freridge — How did you put up with us? I hope that you all enjoy the 1988 SAXON yearbook because it is about us. Practical Law is a required one year course for all students in their sophomore year. The class is taught by Mr. Kietzmann, Mr. Oliver, Mr. O’Mara, and Mr. Schwartz. Practical Law is a val- uable class that teaches everyone about the legal process and the way laws affect them. The course prepares students for their futures by learning the way the law can help them in their jobs and personal lives. The most important aspect of the class is learning personal rights and how and where to get help when it’s needed. Cival law. Criminal law, Consumer law, Family law, liberties, psychology, history, and government fill the course session. The class has field trips to highlight the subject that is currently being taught. Some examples of some of the trips taken are to the county jail and circuit court. These trips enhance the in-class lectures, discussions, mock trials, case studies, guest speakers, movies, and filmstrips, by Lesli Becker Information provided by Practical Law teachers 30 A.P. HISTORY The advanced placement program began at our high school this year 1987-88. So far, the social studies department offers students advanced placement U.S. history as a formalized course, although plans may broaden to include government at a future date. Students in the class learn in an accelerated program geared more toward a college level format and pres- entation. The course is challenging and individuals may select to take the College Board placement test in the Spring of the school year. Any student, whether in an AP course or not, may take the College Board test. However, taking the AP class allows the student to learn necessary information in a formal classroom setting. The students and staff that were involved really deserve a round of applause. Practice seemed to be non-stop work. But as you can see from these pictures they all had a lot of fun. Putting on a production such as this is something the cast, crew, directors, and spectators will fondly remember. Some remember the musical season as a time to grow as people and performers and others remember it as a lot of work! No one will ever forget the kiss of Amy Gibson as Hope with Tom Corkins as Billy Crocker, especially those two. Debbie Hensley’s voice will never be the same after playing Bonnie. She says she has enjoyed her stay in the U.S. She has made a lot of super friends and hopes to see them all when she comes back. She stayed with Jerry and Linda Sarver. Her address is : Ludwien Bos Philips v. Almonclestraat 10 The Netherlands. P.J. DeVault spent his senior year as an exchange student to West Germany. He received a scholarship through the Congress-Bundestag Program, which is an exchange between the governments of the United States and West Ger- many. He spent a portion of his time in Bonn, the capital of West Germany, meeting the ambassadors and government officials. P.J. heard many world famous orchestras and visited museums and art galleries. His host family also took him on a trip to Italy. Michelle Freridge is in Japan as a Rotary Exchange Student. As part of the program she has lived with three different families. This benefits the students. It helps to learn individual differences as well as cultural dif- ferences. In the first host family one of the children could speak English in order to help Michelle learn Japanese. Michelle is shown here with her “sister” Eiko shortly after arriving in Japan. Through the Steelcase YFU Scholarship Program, Janelle Hoekstra was able to spend the summer in Belgium as an exchage student. She lived in the town of Bioul which has approximately 2,000 residents. Everyone worked hard and had alot of fun. This Senior Charity Drive is organized and run by a committee from the Senior Social Studies classes. This project is part of the curriculum for the course. Many of the class members also participated in the activities such as the “We are the world” skit, the student-faculty ball games, etc. Mr. Christopher, Charity Drive advisor, volunteered to have a pie in the face along with several other faculty mem- bers. The seniors had the time of their lives making money for charity. The total amount raised was $4,338.00. We are proud to be a help to those in need. 99 NURSES AIDES Front Row L to R: Dana Clark, Stephanie Kane, Tammy Morrison, Jodi Pennington, and Kathy Purdy. It is a sad but true fact that we won’t always have a great time on a date. We asked students and teachers to tell us about their worst date. Surprisingly enough, it took people a long time to come up with a really bad date. Names have been withheld to protect the innocent. My mom forced me to go out with a guy I hated. He told me how to eat my salad. He forgot to bring money for food. My date had bad breath! I went out with a guy from a different school and all he talked about was his trip to a foriegn country. If he likes it so much why doesn’t he just move there? His car stalled on the way home from Snowball. We had to walk three blocks home in our formals. It was COLD! I spilled my veal on my new outfit. I ran over a deer with my new convertible. Blood was all over the place! He asked me to a formal dance and then refused to dance. I’m not going to Prom again. He didn’t say a word all night. That is what I get for going out with an underclassman! I went out on a blind double date with this guy. We all went to a drive-in restaurant. Of course I had to go to the bathroom. I didn’t know that the place was having septic problems until after I had walked across the lawn trying to get to the bathroom. I sunk three feet into this sewage. I was covered! He had to take me home. The sewage stunk to high heaven. Needless to say I never did make it to the bathroom. It wasn’t a total loss-he asked me out again. 102 THAT PEEVES ME!!!!! What gets under your skin? Do you hate it when people strum their fingers on a table? Do you want to scream when all of your teachers give you homework on the same night? Read the following pet peeves of the HHS students and you will find that many of us have alot in common. When a radio station plays the same ten songs all the time. When people don’t match their clothes. People who have to have the last word. Gum snappers. Teachers giving tests on the last day of school for Seniors. Everything! When people ask me what makes me mad. People who break into other peo- ples lockers and steal stuff. Freshmen! I hate the people in first lunch who run to the lunch room. It’s not like the food is great or anything! The first lunchers knock people down so they can be the first in line. They carelessly trample other students. Why the rush? They just have to wait in line. 103 TEAMWORK 105 106 Sports Fall 109-119 Winter 120-128 Spring 129-135 108 VARSITY FOOTBALL FIGHTING SAXDNS Front Row L to R: Matt Schmader, Troy Ziegler, Dan Pickard, Greg Heath, Mark Matthews, Paul Roy, Mike Johnson, Kevin Kelley, Scott Weller. In celebration of the Sesquicentennial year members of the student committee organized a Sesquicentennial historical marker dedica- tion. Hastings students participated in ded- ication of a historical marker to former Gov- ernor Kim Sigler. Calling Barry County his home, Sigler served as governor from 1946- 1948. Hastings students were instrumental in planning the event. Essay and poster contests relating to a “Kim Sigler” theme gave all students a chance to take part in the cel- ebration. Luke Ciciliano, the Great Grandson of Kim Sigler. Jason Miller presents certificates of recognition to the Kim Sigler Essay Winners. Hastings Choir members directed by Miss Patti Aumick. Brad Weller dedicates the Kim Sigler marker. 145 1987 — the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution The Freedom Shrine is a collection of 28 orig- inal documents photographically reproduced and displayed throughout America to remind its cit- izens of the sacrifices of their forefathers.
