A MAN OF PATIENCE; A MAN OF UNDERSTANDING; A MAN WHO WILL LONG BE REMEMBERED. Mrs. Youngs provides much needed nourishment for football players in pre-school practice. Assembly line procedures ease the annual drudgery of buying books. Happy Days A He t AgaW Charles von Reis, Paul Martin, Ton Hankins, Don Spencer, and Jerry Andrus engage in intellectual re search. After three months of desertion, locker lined halls once again fill with laughs, chatter and commotion. Queen Ann Clarey Ideas took shape, and preparations yielded end products as Homecoming 1963 came into focus under the title of Mystic Mirages. Spirits were set ablaze at the pregame bonfire and continued to burn with the events which followed. Hours of planning and labor culminated in the pageantry of the gaily decorated floats and high-stepping band. Presiding over the festivities in regal splendor was lovely Ann Clarey, pictured at right receiving her crown from retiring queen, Cheryl Leonard. A mirage, it is said, is a transient beauty - fading from sight all too quick. But Homecoming 1963 will long remain a dream in the hearts of Hastings students. Ufotges” Become A Reality Fifteen captivating nominees for court and queen were presented to the students at an all school assembly. From this group the student body then chose the queen and court of four. With such a ballot of beau- ties the task was indeed difficult. o jUls Homecoming Royalty Marilyn Hein Sue Gillons Queen Ann Clarey Heidi von Martens Brenda Purchis Lucky escorts are Butch Hartman, Barry Brower, John Meyers, Charles von Reis, Mike Larsen. 8 GO! GO! GO! The crowd urges the team on as outhouses are set ablaze. Htg[ukg(its ptofeo 10 Some fans can hardly wait . . .for the game, that is. Tom Gibson, Steve Fox, Pete Coble, and Dick Stauffer join John Schowalter in a case of pre-game ex- citement. Saxon hopes soar higher as the surging blaze consumes an Oriole effigy. First Place Seniors ouU floats Second Place Sophomores Building a float calls for creativity, ingenuity, skill, and plenty of good old elbow grease. Students sacri- fice time and effort in hopes of capturing first-place honors for their class in the annual competition. In this year's judging, top rating was given to the senior project which cleverly depicted a swami foretelling future events - encluding, of course, a Saxon victory over Charlotte. Set in turn of the century Missouri, the perform- ance was enhanced by colorful costumes, lively scenery, and gay humor. The audience delighted to the woes and antics of the Smith family, their friends and neighbors, as they prepare to welcome the World's Fair to their hometown. Fresh, enthusiastic, portrayals sparked the presentation and merited, for all those connected, the praise of a job well done. First pick a piece, then, with the index finger, make a small incision ... Kathy Dorman, Sandy Belson, and Terry McClosky employ the disection technique in nibbling chocolates. The gracious way to welcome company. Facial expressions register when a lifelike dummy is introduced into the script. 13 Is that me? Typical reactions to senior pictures float above the hallway bustle. VcvdyL ydtuMhpj Q dcyi Ymji The final year of high school is a climax to countless hours of hard work and fun. There are pictures to be taken, caps and gowns to be rented, and mock elections to be held. For seniors each activity is but a facet of the overall prepara- tion for the long-awaited moment of graduation. 14 Placing photo orders requires much deliberation. I can see it all now, muses Sen- ior Paul Braden as he envisions himself bedecked in cap and gown. Seniors toil on their fourth and final float. Previous experience and present ingenuity enables the class to construct another prize winner. One of the many expenses of the senior year is the fee for caps and gowns--but it is well worth it. However, as the season progressed, with fine coaching, cooperation, and spirit, the Saxons bounced back and finished with a respectable 4-4 record. In addition to a fine team record, quarterback Rick Edger was awarded All-State Honorable Mention by the Detroit Free Press. The ending of the 1963 season brought to a close the thirteenth season of Head Coach Jock Clarey. At Hastings, he has compiled 73 wins, 31 losses, and 2 ties. In his thirteenth season, he has had only 3 losing seasons. His team appreciates his coaching, both on and off the field. The Music Department is com- posed of three vocal groups: Junior High Choir, High School Chorus, and High School Choir. The combined choir performs at the Christmas and spring concerts. High School Chorus is composed of freshmen and sophomores. Each year juniors and seniors who displayed exceptional talent in their chorus years are chosen by Mr. Moyer to be in the High School Choir. Two highlights of the choir s musical season are producing the operetta and singing at graduation. 85 ROW 1: S. Tagg, S. Allerding, B. Hart, S. Kahler, M. Vanderbrook, P. Anderson, T. Chandler, B.
