It is an attempt to record people and events which are pari of the school year. A yearbook endeawrs to capture the students' spirit and enthusiasm — in worktime and in playtime. Without people, the school could not exist. People are the life, breath and mind of the school. Using the theme of “People this year’s staff sought to portray piclorally the student ...his spirit...his activities...his fun. SAXON SCHOOL DAZE freshmen will soon he more than familiar with these stairs as they traverse the halls between the library and the Counseling Clinic. When in the course of human events it be- comes necessary to lose our rights of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness and to begin again the ordering of books and the return of H.H.S. The library fills, the books, so recently purchased, become worn and the Junior Varsity football team pre- pares to bring laurels to Hastings. The cycle is completed and repeats itself and the pictures on these pages are timeless. Candid pictures are not easy, especially when hanging from a window. The bill gets longer every year! We had better get our books now, we won’t dare when the ‘‘big kids” get here. Give us a chance and we’ll be playing Fri- day nights too. 1 Homecoming 1961 With last year’s queen Sally King, looking on, petite Marie Leary pre- sented Queen Kaye with a dozen roses prior to the coronation. 4 After a spirited Snake Dance, cheerleaders, students, and the band gathered around a Victory Bonfire to send Homecoming 1961 off to a rousing start. HOMECOMING — Gracing the homecoming court this year were Cheryl Johnson, Joan Taffee, Jan Pont and Ann tlarey. HOMECOMING — crisp, clear night, lot te, 39-6. Friday,October 13th, 1961, proved to be a lucky day all around for Hastings High. On a with vivacious Kaye James reigning over homecoming festivities, the Saxons beat Char- io ?Z%°ut dcour« and their Ma'CO,mn’ ,ed Grand March- ' After weeks of work comes the time to show off all efforts. The floats added to the festivity of Homecoming and a prime example is the second place float of the Juniors. The Highlight of the evening was the football game with Charlotte. The boys also showed the fallacy of Friday the thirteenth by scor- ing another victory for H.H.S. The cheerleaders supported our team with enthusiastic cheers. Seniors shrug off the superstitions of Friday the thirteenth by winning first place. Fabulous Fallacies The Sophomores SOAR OVER SUPERSTITION by taking third place. The Freshmen make a good showing for their first yea Junior Play Reginald Rose’s “DINO” stage version by Kristin Sergei under the direction of Mrs. Clark Caterer. “Now PLEASE try to learn your lines before tomorrow nights opening. The neighborhood girls gather to exchange gossip. The Hastings High School football team team wound up an exciting season by defeating Ionia and becoming League Conference Champions. This season was extra triumphant for the Saxons for they had a perfect League record winning all six of their games. Part of their success could be accounted for by the enthusiastic crouds, which followed the team. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SAXONS! The cast and chorus of “Hose Marie” depict a major scene. The choir, under the direction of Mr. Moyer, captivated two capacity audiences with “Rose Marie”, this year. The Canadian love story came alive, complete with Ca- nucks, Indians, trappers, dance hall girls and mounties. In attempting to prove that love eventually conquers all. Rose Marie (Carolyn Skidmore( and Jim Kenyon (Dean Dingman), plus the rest of the cast and chorus, sang and danced their way through such memorable hits as “Indian Love Call,” “Rose Marie,” “The Mounties Song,” “Vive La Canadian and “Totem Tom Tom.” The orchestra, comprised of 21 talented towns- people, was especially fine this year. Spe- cial recognition should be given to Freddy Hauser, an “unsung heroine,” who devoted many hours of her time toward making the operetta a success. All in all, we can be very proud of our choir for the excellent shows they have done in the past, and the ones they will do in the future. Mr. Fay ('lardy tunes up. Accompanist Freddy Hauser adds aura of near professionalism. From the expression on choir director Her- bert Moyer’s face. “Rose Marie” marked another year in his operet tic performances. 1962 Basketball Champs The basketball conference championship is once again ours as we gain more points toward Ihe All Sports Trophy. However, in the Saxons' first tournament game against Class A teams, a strong Jackson team brought defeat to Hastings, ending our chances for further 1962 basketball ‘ championships. It all seems to be in the way you hold your mouth. Papa is all THE SENIOR PLAY under the direc- tion of Mr. Clark Caterer and Student Director, Alex Hoffman, was success- fully presented after several setbacks. “Papa Is All” by Patterson Greene is the story of a Mennonite family: a Penn- sylvania Dutch mother (Judy Bowman), a daughter (Cheryl Johnson) and son (Ron Keithley) who rebel against a ty- rannical father (Paul Sare). This three- act comedy is filled with subtle humor contributed greatly by Mrs. Yoder (San- dy Bonne). The Police officer who solved their problem (Steve Hammond) com- pleted the six-character cast. CAST — left to right. Seated: Sandy Bowne (Mrs. Yoder); Paul Sare (Papa); Judy Bowman (Mama). Standing: Steve Hammond (State Trooper Brendle); Ron Keithley (Jake); Cheryl Johnson (Kmma). J-Hop -1962 On Saturday night, May 5, 1962, the Class of 1963 presented the annual J-Hop. With the theme of “Eastern Interlude” the west gym featured a row of bazaar tents filled with exotic Eastern Treasures, a desert mural, and a fortune- telling booth, in which a turbaned gypsy read the past, present, or future from a crystal ball. Eastern Interlude Juniors, Seniors and tlieir guests danced to the strains of Hob Boerma Quintet. The floor show featured the “Emperors” a guitar-piano-drum group; and Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Otteson, former dancing instructors for Arthur Murray, who demonstrated various dance steps. Punch and cookies were served by beautifully clad “harem” girls. A familiar fare at most social events Mr. Ben Campbell. So often commencement implies the end. The end of four years of hard study. The end of endless hours of homework, teachers lectures, and exams. But in actuality, com- mencement means the beginning. It is the beginning of a new life. A life in which we begin to use the knowledge which we have acquired in the past four years. For many it will be the first rung on the ladder of higher learning. For others it will be the beginning of a new life filled with new responsibilities. For all it will be a chal- lenge. Yet the past is not forgotten, the fun and laughter will always be a part of our memories. Clubs-Organizations Clubs and organizations are an important part of high school activities. In the groups the school paper is produced Homecoming is planned-, clothes are made for kindergartner's dolls, and the school government is run, carnival booth ideas are conjured-, the school year book is put together — all these things and many more take place during the school year at meet- ings during and after the school day. The Student Council is a representa- tive government of the school. It con- sists of one student from each advisory group, and the class presidents. Its func- tion is to promote better understanding between the students and the faculty. By holding an annual open meeting the student council presents to the student body a picture of student government at work. This year for the first time the student council sponsored an all- school carnival from which it gained funds to enlarge the Garth Underwood scholarship. While there is a great deal of desire to field a winning team, this is done by not sacrificing any of the qualities of good sportsmanship and by keeping athletics in the proper perspective. Hastings’ athletic teams are staffed by the best coaches in the state, and these coaches teach their athletes a great deal more than just how to play the game. Saxon’s are taught the mean- ing of sportsmanship and the true mean- ing of competitive athletics. This year's teams as teams of the past have shown the result of this type of coaching and school support. This year’s teams rank high in the final league stand- ings in all sports. They have done this through hard work, desire and playing the game the way it should be played. This success would never have been possiple if it were not for the interest and desire on the part of the administration, faculty and coaches to keep Hastings’ program one of the finest in the state of Michigan. Saxon Coaches Jock Clary, Athletic Director Varsity Football Robert Miller Wrestling, Tennis Carroll Jensen Golf Athletics is, as any other extra-curricular activity, an integral part of Hastings High. It not only fosters clean living and competition, but also encourages leadership on and off the field. The coaching staff of Hastings High, in keeping with this idea, advocate a strong athletic policy. The high school places upon the shoulders of seven men the responsibility of organizing this program. The seven coaches of Hastings High have truely distinguished them- selves by leading their teams to victory after victory. Jack Hoke Jr. V. Conference Champs 1961 SAXONS TAKE CHAMPIONSHIP Hastings High School’s 1901 varsity football team brought the West Central League football champion- ship back to Hastings for the first time since 1952. After dropping their opener, the Saxons roared back to win seven straight and the league championship. The success of this year’s football team can be attri- buted to the fine team spirit and hustle that was never lacking all year. The hard hitting Saxons were also fortunate in having one of the1 hest coaching staffs in the state. Under the direction of head coach Jock Clarey and his assistant, coach Jack Hoke, the Saxons were well prepared for every game. The climax of the season came when the Saxons avenged last year’s defeat by topping Ionia 14-0. This vic- tory enabled the twenty graduating seniors to end their career on the happy note. JUNIOR VARSITY If this year’s Junior Varsity is a preview' of future varsity teams, Saxon rooters are assured of highly successful teams in the com- ing years. The J.V.’s, under fine leadership of Coach Anton Turkal and Coach Bob Miller, had a near perfect record of six wins, one loss, and one tie. Hard work and desire paid off for the young Saxons. FRESHMEN The Frosh, coached by Mr. Vic ('amp, won one game while dropping five. The Young- sters season, although their record does not show it, was very successful. They showed strong desire to w in and a willingness to learn coupled with endless spirit. A look to the future for this team does not look dim. Four years ago the Freshman team won but one game; in its Senior year it was league champ. HASTINGS FRESHMEN — 1st row : Ron Dingerson, Orton Robert, Brad Miles. Vince Storey, John James. Starting the season with a supposedly inexperi- enced squad, this was supposed to be a rebuild- ing year for the Saxon’s wrestling team. Instead the Saxons went on to compile the best record in the school’s wrestling history. Hastings had a record of 9 wins, 4 losses, and 10 dual meets. The team was made up almost entirely of underclassmen, and so Hastings should be highly successful in the next few years. This year’s team was far from weak, however. They all worked very hard. The team is confident of a 1st division in the league track meet. LETTER MEN — 1st row: Dick Van Wie, Denny Malcolm, Don Steeby. Clary, J. Perry, C. Leonard. Hastings High's cheerleaders under the direction of Miss Pat Murphy are responsible for the tremendous school spirit that is found at all the Saxon football and basket- ball games. These girls not only add beauty, but they add pep and help maintain the fine sportsmanship that Hastings' spectators always have. Miss Pat Murphy All Sports Trophy The all-sports trophy symbolizes the success of an athletic year. Winning this trophy means that a school has put on the field, track and court the most well rounded teams in the league. To win this trophy a school must compile the highest number of points in all sports. Hastings has won this trophy twice since the trophy was adopted by the league five years ago. If Hastings can win the trophy this year it would stay in Hastings permanently and a new trophy would be introduced. The significance of this trophy is great, and Saxon athletics have been striving to retire this trophy all year. Administration Faculty The prospect of haring a different teacher for every class seems formidable to Freshmen who feel they will never be able to keep the faculty straight in their minds. However, this problem soon vanishes as each teacher becomes a distinct personality and the characteristic sayings and gestures mark each member of the faculty as an individual. The faculty members in a high school have many jobs in addition to the primary one of teaching. In their positions as advisors they perform an ini'aluable service which the student body will never be able to repay. As teachers they attempt to instill in the minds of their students the most important lesson in existence; how to attain knowledge. HASTINGS HIGH SCHOOL Three main ingredients go into mak- ing a school system — a school build- ing, teachers, and students. Pictured here are views of Hastings High, the original building and the new wing which houses the gym, administrative offices, and the library. The shot at the bottom is of the stu- dents. It is the students who make the physical building become alive and meaningful. THE BOARD OF EDUCATION l t. row - Mr . II. Smith, Mr. K. Guenther, Mrs. Erik von Reis. 2nd. row - Mr. C. Faul, Mr. II. HASTINGS HIGH: CLASSES, KIDS AND FUN There is more to school than just mountains of homework. Even classes can be fun as well as informative and edu- cational. Whether it is the exercise of gym class, the creativeness of art, the practical experience of farm shop, or the quietness of Study Hall, something worthwhile is gained. School is also a place to see and converse with a friend, be it at noon or during the five minute break between classes. It is a place where people with similar interests can com- bine their abilities, talents, or trades. It is a place for the future teacher, the future ag man, the artist, the secretary to gain knowledge from books, teachers, ex- perience, and fellow students. School is a place to create, cultivate, condition. We create ideals and goals. We cultivate lifetime friendships. We condition ourselves for the things to come. Junior Ron Gerald sands away on a wood work shop project. So you have an overdue library hook, huh? Student Council members Alex Hoffman and Denny Stores will find it in one of the frequent locker in- spections. Do ya measure up? Graduation time draws near and Seniors get measured for caps and gowns. Senior Carol Jerow seems to be en- grossed with one of her many art projects.
