HASTINGS HIGH SCHOOL DEDICATION TO Mr. Ben Campbell For- His unwavering devotion to Hastings High School His loyal support of all of our teams His friendly smile and cheerful greetings And his daily application of the Golden Rule We. the Seniors of H.H.S.. respectfully dedicate our 1959 Doomsday. THE DOOMSDAY BOOK 1959 PUBLISHED BY THE DOOMSDAY STAFF HASTINGS HIGH SCHOOL Hastings, Michigan Foreword Throughout this book you will find a record of events that have taken place in the school year of 1958 1959. We the Senior class of 1959 of H.H.S. are leaving behind us in this book, memories that in our minds, will never be forgotten. Within this book and these memories are our relationships with classmates, underclassmen, and the faculty; accomplishments scholastically and athletically; and most of all the opportunities afforded us. We have done our best to choose the field of our endeavor through the help of one of the finest school systems in the state of Michigan. Also we know that we will be able to face the world before us in our chosen field because. “Knowledge is our power, and God our strength”. The Doomsday Book was named after the Anglo Saxon Doomsday meaning a record book. THE DOOMSDAY STAFF Editor. Terry Kurr Business Manager, Lynn Ossenheimer Sales Manager. Betty Burkey Photography. Neil The Seniors’ Story As frightened frosh, we soon made our presence known at H.H.S. Leading us through the first fateful year were our officers: President - D. Wallace; Vice President- B. Burkey; Secretary- M. Morey; Treasurer - C Larabee. We entered enthusiastically into all school activities and participated in clubs. Many of our boys began their sports careers, and some of our peppier girls became cheerleaders. In our spohomore year we gained confidence and became even more active. Our officers were: President - N. Lubieniecki; Vice President - L. Ossenheimer; Secretary -S.Schowal ter; Treasurer - S. Phelps. Our boys struggled on with sports, and Sue Schowalter represented our class on the Homecoming Court. We finished off the year by making a clean sweep of all the contests at the water carnival, except the girls' tug of war. When we came back in the fall of our Junior year, we were all charged with enthusiasm for the coming year. We charged through this hectic year with the capable leadership of President - J. Jacobs; Vice President - N. Frey; Secretary - M. Miller; Treasurer - B. Burkey. Our first attempt at acting proved to be both work and fun. Our production of “Onions in the Stew proved to be a smashing success. After a very successful year of sports, our class won the “Little Brown Jug“ for school spirit. At Homecoming time, J. Taffee and M. Becker represented our class on the queen’s court. The biggest event of the year and the most thrilling for all of us was the Prom The theme of our J-Hop was “Island of Enchantment , and it was truly enchanting. N. Frey our very capable class president carried us through the hustle and bustle of senior pictures, senior privileges and the senior trip. Norm was assisted by the other officers: Vice President - M. Aderhold; Secretary - M. Morey; Treasurer - S. Schcwalter. Our senior boys really came through our last year, and we had a very successful year sports wise. We also were very proud of our senior cheerleaders. We were especially proud of queen S. Schowalter as she reigned over Homecoming and also of B. Burkey who served on her court. Senior girls fluttered through the Senior Tea in the spring and at the same time the Senior play cast began rehearsal for “The Mouse Trap . After the hurry and scurry of graduation, we. the Senior class, drew the curtain on four wonderful years of high school. The last leaders for the class of 1959. M. Aderhold, Vice President; M. Varsity Football The 1958 Varsity football team, coached by Jock Clarey, turned in one of the best seasons in the history of Hastings High School. Behind co-captains Wendell Armour and Ray Benner, the team ended the season with a 7-1 record for second place in the West Central League conference. The team started out with a close vrin over non-league Battle Creek Lakeview, beating them 20-19. The next four games saw the Saxons beating St. Johns Charlotte, Grand Ledge and Greenville in that order. On October 24th, on a very muddy field, the Saxons lost 14-13 to a good Ionia team that became League Champs. The Saxons returned home for the last two games of the season, beating Belding and Eaton Rapids without being scored upon. After the season, Wendell Armour, co-captain of the 1958 team, was chosen by the Detroit Free Press to be on the All-State Class B first team, and WOOD-TV also selected him as a member of its All Star Team for the fine performance he turned in during the season. The record of the team was as follows: Hastings 20 B.C. Lakeview 19 Hastings 25 St. Johns 7 Hastings 26 Charlotte 19 Hastings 19 Grand Ledge 6 Hastings 20 Greenville 0 Hastings 13 Ionia 14 Hastings 31 Belding 0 Hastings 10 Eaton Rapids 0 The Fighting Saxons The All Sports Trophy This year, being the second year of competition for an all sports trophy in the West Central League Conference, the Hastings Saxons are the leading contenders. Before this book went to press, the standings were as follows: Hastings............................30 Ionia...............................24 St. Johns...........................22 Eaton Rapids........................19 Grand Ledge.........................19 Greenville..........................14 Charlotte........................... .9 Belding............................ .7 With well balanced spring sports teams - track, golf, baseball and tennis, Hastings should have no trouble in winning the all sports trophy. Winning both the League Championship with a 13-3 record and the Class B District Title at Ionia by defeating Ionia and Lowell the Saxons gave the hometown fans another 1958 - 1959 sports record of which to be proud. Captains for the team this year were Seniors Norm Lubieniecki, and Gary Cole, and they and the other Senior members of the team -- Jerry Jacobs, Terry Kurr, Lee O’Donnell, Mike Aderhold, Chris Kaechele, and Manager Ulvis Grinvalds—had a most memorable last year of basketball. Both the team and Coach Lang agreed that school spirit was the best in many years, not only at Hastings High School, but among the citizens of Hastings as well. Evidence of this was illustrated by the fact that at most away games Hastings had a larger attendance than the opposing team. The track, baseball, tennis and golf teams were proving to be as successful as the football and basketball teams. In track the Hastings Thin Clads have already proven themselves by going undefeated and placing fourth in the Hastings Relays where competition is rough. Outstanding participation has been shown by Co-Captain Lee O’Donnell who has broken the school shotput record by tossing the shot forty-seven feet, eleven inches and by Co-Captain Mike Aderhold w ho is out to break the 440 record. In tennis it can be concluded that this season’s future looks bright again. Last year’s Champions are hoping to duplicate their record w ith five returning lettermen. Already this season, the Saxon Netters have gone undefeated. The baseball team has been doing its share this season too by being defeated only once in five starts. This loss w'as to St. Johns. Even though they are in league competition with us there are still high hopes and expectations that Hastings will bring home this championship. Among spring sports at Hastings is a team on which most people do not keep too close a w atch. Although they have suffered a few defeats in the past, this year a light seems to be glowing among its participants and the future is looking brighter. It wron’t be much longer before golf, too, is in the spotlight. TRI HI Y ALPHA Row 1 D. Lambert, C. Larabee. B. Burkey, Secretary; M. Miller, Treasurer; Miss Schroeder. M. Gies, President; J. Music Department In past years our music department, which consists of vocal and instrumental students, has been as good as it could possibly be when one takes into considerat- ion the enrollment. Each year new and better steps are being taken to improve these talented groups. They are considered extra-curricular activities just as sports are. The choir, under the direction of Mr. Herbert Moyer, has done a fine job in the following activities which are just a few- things they will have done by the end of this year Operetta Christmas vocal concert, Singing at National Honor Society Initiation Vocal Festival-MSU Spring vocal concert Choral assembly Singing at graduation The band, under the direction of Mr. Arthur Steward, has also done a very fine job and is beginning to be recognized for achievements thus far accomplished. A few of this year's activities are as follows: Band assembly (3 times this year) Band concert (3 times this year) Marching at football games Marching at Holland Tulip Festival Playing at pep rallies Playing at basketball games Concert at Grand Rapids (3rd place) Too often these subjects have been taken for granted and considered as frill courses. However, if everyone thought just lightly, they could see how much more enjoyment they have added to our lives when hearing them, and that they, too, can lead on into a profession. Because of this lack of notoriety and the fact that a good job has been done, we wish to salute both the choir and the band. We also wish them luck in future years and remind people to keep an eye on these groups because in years to come, with increasing enrollment and talent, they will become even better developed quantity wise and quality wise.
