The '52-'53 school year found thc various sing- ing groups of H.H.S. very busy. The choir opened the season by singing at the EBI program in the fall. Many adults and stu- dents heard their Christmas songs at the Christ- mas concert, an assembly, and a party sponsored by the Kiwanis. They also sang at the National Honor Society initiation and the Spring festival in Kalamazoo. Chorus, which was a beginners class open to grades 9 - 12 - sang at a pep assembly. The two double quartets combined into one group, the Singing Saxons, which sang for several service clubs and various organizations around the city. Some of their service projects were the distributing of com- munity chest signs, sponsoring pep meetings, and making and delivering Christmas baskets. and sponsoring thc youth center in the gym. The pro- jects for earning money were selling cider at the foothall games and selling taffy. Officers for this year were: Car Compton. presi- dent, Stan Snyder, vice-presidentg Phil Palmatier. secretary: Ron Hall. treasurer, KEY CLUB The Key club enjoyed many new activities dur- ing 1952-53. Thirty-one members, which was a record high in membership, took part in the year's activities. A carnation sale. two pep meetings, donations to the polio fund, pop sales. and numerous other service projects were undertaken. The members also attended a Globetrotter basketball game and district convention. Officers were president, Tom Clevelandg vice- prcsident, Dick Hammond, secretary, Tony Hoff- mang treasurer. jack Kelleyg sgts. at arms. Fred Roush and Phil Palmatier. RIFLE CLUB The Rifle club is a branch of the Barry County Sportsman club and affiliated with the National Rifle Association. The boys met every Tuesday night throughout the school year at the 50 foot indoor range. A meet is planned every year with Mr. Knopfis F.F.A. hoys at the Barry County Sportsman out- door park. Next year they plan to schedule matches with neighboring towns. Olficers for the year were: president. Mike West, secretary. Ray Patton. UAMERICAN GIRL TRI-HI-Y Tri-Hi-Y started the year with informal and formal initiations. Food baskets were given to needy families at Thanksgiving. At Christmas time, Tri-Hi-Y helped the youth council to sponsor the semi-formal dance. the Sno-ball. Six girls were elected to attend the state Hi- Y-Tri-Hi-Y legislature in Lansing. During the year, two joint meetings with the Hi-Y were held. Officers for the year were: President ludy Iohnsong vice president, Ianet Feldpauschg secretary, Carolyn lVlillerg Treasurer leanne Helm. FUTURE NURSES The Future Nurses Club were very active this year. During the Christmas season they prepared Christmas stockings for the mentally handicapped at Stewart Lake. They sent cards to the Thornapple Valley Home. They toured two hospitals at Grand Rapids-St. Mary's and Blodgett. The club visited the Blood Bank. visited Ann Kellogg in Battle Creek. worked at the hospital on weekends. and sent Valentines to the handi- capped children. They also had special speeches on nursing and found time to make uniforms to wear while working in the hospital. G.A.A. The G.A.A. was quite active this year. During the year they sponsored a dance in Ianuary. They chose basketball for the winter sport. At the end of the season. the G.A.A. teams played the women faculty and lost to them 26-12. The spring sport was softball. Officers were: Ioan Whitworth, first semester presi- dent, Ianiee Keeler, second semester president. Dixie Cooley was the secretary-treasurer. Sponsor for the group was Miss Frazier. GIRLS LEAGUE BOARD The Girls League Board worked on many different projects throughout the year. They sponsored Home- coming. a Valentine dance. College panel, Girls room. a pep meeting. sent food baskets at Christmas time. and a Care package at the end of the year. They also sponsored various other projects.
