Titles 0 Nobility When compiling this list of seniors and their outstanding features this year, we were unable to find a person with enough experience and knowledge to tell us which senior was the best in what Then we thought of the table. Did you ever play dup, table, up? Then you know that the table sees all, hears all, and knows all, so it was the logical one to ask to write this column. F. S. C. This meeting will now come to order! All right, Dolan and Frandsen, let's break up the sewing circle and get down to business! Let's have the minutes of the last meeting! Bert and Sally, this is a council meeting not a date! And thus another Faculty-Student Council gets off to a typical start. Meeting in room 309 every Tuesday half hour period, the council, al- though unruly at times, accomplished as much as was expected of them and more besides. , In the fall of the year all-school elections were held. Whether through dirty politics, party policy, or whatever the case might have been, the following were victors in the campaign: Morris Hill, mayor: Philip Frandsen, public service chief, Paul Myers, chief justice: jack Walton, sanitary engineer: and Willo Hampton, traffic manager. With senior and junior officers, homeroom representatives, and the all-school officers as its personnel, the council got off to a fine start. The officers for the first semester were Tom Dolan, vice-chairman: Gail Foster, secretary: Jerry Fuller, treasurer. The council, through its commissions, organized noon basketball and provided a trophy for the championship team. Paper collection, with Jack Walton as chairman, was organized and put into effect. Possibly the greatest feat of the F.S.C this year was the filling of the school's quota in the 4th War Loan Drive by contests, challenges, and pressure publicity. Came the second semester and Tom Dolan was again elected vice- chairman, Myrna Werner, secretary, Harold Fuller, treasurer The main aim of the council has always been to promote a higher type of co-operation between the faculty and student body, to improve student participation in school affairs, and to consider problems related to the school. Throughout the entire year th.s policy has shaped the proceed- ings of the council. The council spent the first part of the second semester organizing a school-wide clean-up day. With Sally Goodyear as student chairman and Mr. Burgess as faculty chairman, the committee very aptly took over the entire organization of the clean-up, and the success of the day speaks very well for the council. GIRLS LEAGUE BOARD Each year from the female population of the school there is chosen a cross section of young women representing all walks of life in Hastings High School. After the smoke had cleared from the fall election it was found that Ella Fisher had been elected president of the organizationg Doris Lock- wood, vice-president, Beverly Bradford, secretary: and Mildred Will, treasurer. Under the expert supervision of Mrs. Irene Hamilton, the newly elected faculty adviser to replace Miss Rowe, the board accomplished much during the year. The girls started the year off right by hopping right into things and putting on the annual fall party, The Turkey Trot. Ella Fisher was general chairman and did a very fine job, along with the rest of the committees, in putting on one of the best dances sponsored in quite some time. - While poking through the constitution of the group, like all women, they had to tear it apart and put it back together. Well the poor con- stitution found itself dissected, torn up, and .after a scattering of paper found itself with an excellent addition. The girls amended their con- stitution so that every homeroom was represented on the board although voting power was denied them. At Christmas time the girls sponsored a drive to have every girl fill a box with cookies and send them to Percy J ones Hospital in Battle Creek. This drive was very successful. The girls then turned to something more entertaining for the f'fems of the school and promptly gave a style show for women only ! The show was a great success, and with that the board closed its portals to further business. BOYS UNION COUNCIL ' Came the fall of '43 and there mysteriously appeared in the hall of our fair institution posters proclaiming the exceptional talents of one Louis Myers for president of the Boys Union Council. Vote for Myers, Don't call us liars was a favorite of the campaign. Running against this able candidate was none other than John Fraser Coleman. It came to pass that election day arrived with no bloodshed on either side, and both parties confident of a victory. But when election chair- man, Mr. E. L. Taylor, called for all candidates to present themselves on the stage to bear the scrutiny of the entire male population of the school, neither Coleman nor Myers was anywhere to be found. When election returns were in, it was found that Myers had defeated Coleman by a length, and Louis was the B.U.C. president. Lawrence Fuller was elected vice-president, and towering Shirley Henry was elected sergeant-at-arms. With all the officers elected, the council then sank back in their easy chairs and let people admire them for their fancy titles. And for alll know, they're still letting people observe them free of charge. In short it appears that the B.U.C. members have taken on the aspects of armchair politicians.
