S. Potts, Trustee T rustee Realizing the.need for increased educational facilities, the Board of Edu- cation started agitation in favor of a new school building, and succeeded in putting across the bond issue which makes this possible. In the vote, which was taken March 21, Hastings voters showed themselves to be almost four to one in favor of the erection of a new building. There was much effort expend- ed in getting this measure before the public. Pamphlets containing necessary information about the issue were distributed among the voters, and open Parent- Teacher Association meetings were held in which the need was discussed. The Board of Education is to be commended for the way this matter has been handled. The old Junior High School, erected in 1872, has been torn down and work begun on the new Central school. Finstrom, Wilcox, Coach Hawthorne. 1929 Football Season Scoring 127 to its opponents' 64, Hastings High ended one of the most successful football seasons in many years. The local gridders won five, tied one, and lost two out of a total of eight games. Under the capable direction of Coach Hawthorne and Assistant Coach Kirsten, the team developed an effective offense and defense. The Hastings offense was centered upon a baffling aerial attack. In conference competition Hastings won three games and tied one to win fourth place. The tie was a 0 to 0 game played at Charlotte. Although the line was weak because of inexperience, this was more than made up for by the excellent work of the veteran backfield composed of Miller, Young, Hall, and Baldwin. Wilcox and James, ends, and Finstrom, center, were others who were outstanding both offensively and defensively. A summary of the season follows: H. H. S. 3.1 Nashville 0 H. H. Basket Ball Season Hastings Highâs Blue and Gold quintet played another successful season of basket ball. Playing 16 games, Hastings won 11 and ended fourth in the Little Twelve conference. The locals averaged 28 points per game w hile their opponents averaged 61.4. The most pleasing part of the seasonâs results, to Hastings fans, however, were the four defeats that Coach Hawthorne's boys administered to Charlotte, the traditional rival. After winning the district tournament from Charlotte 12 to 10 in the most exciting game of the year. Hastings was again paired with Charlotte at the regional tourney. This time the Hawksters took command of the situation and won 29 to 16. The next evening, though staging a remarkable and almost un! elievable comeback, Hastings lost to Grand Haven 34 to 25. The six players upon whom the burden rested most heavily were Miller, Young, Wilcox, James, Laubaugh, and Kenyon. Under the leadership of Captain William James, Coach Hawthorne and Assistant Coach Kirsten a well balanced aggregation, capable of winning points in every event, was organized. After easily winning a dual meet with Allegan by a score of 85-42, the team entered the conference meet at Albion on May 3. By scoring 53 points and breaking five conference records the Blue and Gold thinclads won the champion- ship, the first of its kind for Hastings. Records in the polevault, broad jump, half-mile, 120 yard low hurdles and 220 yard low hurdles were established by the Hastings athletes. Later in the season a dual meet was arranged with Lakeview High school of Battle Creek. A large team was entered in the regional contest at Kal- amazoo on May 17. Miller, James, Ryan, Humphrey, Baldwin, Gardner, Williams, Laubaugh, ( lary, Benjamen and Havens were largely responsible for the exceptionally fine record made during the year. J ............... The membership is comprised of the four class presidents, a representative from each organization in high school, the dean of girls, the assistant principal, an adviser appointed from each class, and the director of physical education. The principal accomplishment this year has been the sponsoring of the Spotlight, annual vaudeville show. The council has also been responsible for the success of the high school banquet, Clean Up day, and numerous other activities, including the first mixer of the year. Student Faculty council com- mittees plan and carry out the Water Carnival. The Fortnight Sumner Myers was editor of the Fortnight, a bi-weekly newspaper, the first semester. Johnnie Armbruster was business manager; Cannes Kenfield, advertising manager; Margaret Merrick, news editor; Opal Stairs, exchange editor; Doris Kekert, joke editor; Walter Heath, sport editor; Donna McKeown, headline writer; and Miss Ksther Baldwin, adviser. Miss Marian Kinch has been the director, and Virginia Potts the accom- panist of the club. Girlsâ Glee Club Hastings High School June 6. 1930 Dear Dot, I am anxious to tell you about our Girlsâ Glee club. We have had a very successful year. There are 31 of us in all, and the officers are: President, Barbara Wdcox; vice-president, Charlotte Bessmer; secretary, Julia Anne Qua; treasurer, Lois Lee; accompanist, V irginia Potts. Miss Marian Kinch is our director. Every girl had a part in putting on the operetta, ââIn Old Louisiana,â and we have made over 30 appearances besides that. We sang at the Rotary club, the Lions club, the Teachersâ club, the Methodist church, Presbyterian church, and many other places. At the district contest at Kalamazoo we won second place, and so we went to Ann Arbor for the state contest. We had more fun getting money to,go to Ann Arbor. We had an ice cream benefit at an ice cream parlor and candy store down town. The proprietor gave us a percentage of the profit on all sales he made that day. Besides, we sold tickets and made a percentage on all the tickets we sold. People who bought tickets could use them for trade on that day. Some of the business men of the city became so interested that they gave us over $30 in donations. We have enjoyed our year, and all regret that M:ss Kinch will not l e with us next year.
