CAPT. RALPH J. GOULDS Captain Ralph J. GOU LDS was born May 30, 1929 in Vienna, Austria. He attended grade school in Austria and England. After completion of grade school in New York City, he attended Brooklyn Technical High School from which he graduated in 1947. He then attended the University of Rochester, New York and graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science Degree with Honors in the field of Business Administration and Economics. Upon graduation he was commissioned an Ensign in the United States Navy and reported to the USS SICILY lCVS 1183. After spending two years in the Korean conflict he reported to Submarine School, New London in July of 1953. After grad- uation in December of that year, he served tours of duty in the USS ANG LER CSS 240l, USS PIPER CSS 4091, USS SAILFISH lSS 5729, USS BLENNY lSS 2403, as well as a tour of shore duty at the USN Submarine Base, New London. In July of 1962 he was ordered to the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island for the Command and Staff courses. Coincident with this course, he attained a Master's Degree in International Relations from George Washington Univer- sity. Subsequently Captain GOU LDS held command of the USS ENTEMEDOR lSS 3403 from August 1963 to August 1965. This tour was followed by two years on the faculty of the Naval War College, Newport, R.I. as a member of the War Gaming Department and by a two year tour of duty on the Staff of COMMANDER, SEVENTH Fleet as the ASW Officer. Upon completion of this tour, Captain GOU LDS served as Chief of Staff, COMMANDER, Submarine Squadron FIGHT before assuming duties as COMMANDER, Submarine Division THIRTY-TWO. Upon being promoted, Captain GOU LDS assumed duties as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans on the staff of COMMANDER, Sub- marine Force, U,S, Pacific Fleet. Captain GOU LDS has been awarded the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V, the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon with Star, the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Meritorious Unit Citation lGalIantry Crossl, and the Korean Presi- dential Unit Citation.
