I LCDR JAMES PAFIAS Lcdr James E Paflas was born nn October 1939 ln New London, Connecticut, where he grew up and went to grade school Upon graduating from New London Hugh School, he enrolled at the Unlted States Merchant Marine Academy He recelved a Bachelor of Scuence degree un Nautlcal Scnence In 1961 Commlssloned an Ensign ln September 1961 he reported aboard the USS YANCEY lAKA 933 for hls flrst tour He subsequently served aboard the USS DEWEY CD LG 143 the USS MASSEY CDD 7781 commanded Rlver Dlvlslon 572 In Vietnam, and served aboard the USS OKINAWA l LPH 33 Durmg this same period, he attended the Naval Post Graduate School at Monterey where he earned a Bachelor of Sclence degree In meteorology He came to the HASSAYA MPA from Fleet Weather Center, Pearl Harbor, where he worked as a forecaster Lcdr Pafuas has been awarded the Bronze Star wuth combat V Navy Commendation Medal wlth combat 'V Army Commendation Medal, Combat Action Rlbbon, Republuc of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vletnam Servlce Medal wlth four bronze stars, and the National Defense Servlce Medal He IS marrued to the former Beatruce Belfleld and they have three children Windsor, Trlxle, and Jay i m F .4 L ri 5 3 ll fs l
