D E 1 APRIL 27-29 THE COUNTRY East of the Straits that border from the Red Sea into the Gulf of Aden lies a shallow peninsula of jagged rock formed by volcanic eruption. Tiny-78 square miles-strategically located is the Colony of Aden. Across the isthmus of Khormaksar which joins Aden to the inland, is the Aden Protectorate cover- ing 112,000 square. Sun-scorched, agriculturally barren and lapped by a slug- gish too-warm sea, Aden Colony was one of the fabled far-flung outposts of the Roman, Turkish, and hnally British empires. Today Aden is a thriving trading center between the East and West ranking second only to New York City in the amount of cargo handled daily. THE PEOPLE The 138,000 population of Aden Colony is comprised mainly of Aden Arabs, Hadhramis, Protectorate Arabs, and Yemenis, and minorities of Pakistanis, Indians, Somalis, and Europeans. With it's hot humid climate, Aden has a very brief best time . Daytime in the winter is reasonably comfortable. July through September would be con- sidered to be the most oppresive month with temperatures soaring to 105 degrees plus and sand-laden winds blowing from the desert. Although the average annual rainfall is Z , many years are without rain. Being a barren and rugged desert landscape a purple brown color is distinctive with few cultivated trees and shrubs and no wild animals of interest. Seagulls, and a few pelicans and flamingos constitute the fowl of the area.
